He did the first footy celeb-vehicle TV show that I can remember, so maybe props for that. But it was terrible. And Bryan Robson had already guested in Jossy's Giants.

Hart, Reina, de Gea are three standout keepers imo. I'd have Reina. He makes fewest mistakes, apart from anything else.

It's true, whenever I hear about the guy it's because of another wonder-display. I guess he might be shipping goals every other week, for all I watch Wigan.

Sir Dave Richards, the Premier League chairman, has accused Fifa and Uefa of stealing football from the English, while at a sports and security conference in Qatar. He also stated that organisers of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar must tackle the availability of alcohol, saying: "If you don't do something about it you're starting to bury your head in the sand a bit."

Richards, who is also a Football Association board member, also criticised the process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids, saying that Fifa should have made clear that they favoured taking the tournament to new parts of the world.

With the Fifa vice-president Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan and the International Cricket Council's chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, looking on in Doha, Richards repeatedly reminded his audience that the world had England to thank for football.

"England gave the world football. It gave the best legacy anyone could give. We gave them the game," Richards said. "For 50 years, we owned the game … We were the governance of the game. We wrote the rules, designed the pitches and everything else.

"Then, 50 years later, some guy came along and said: 'You're liars,' and they actually stole it. It was called Fifa. Fifty years later, another gang came along called Uefa and stole a bit more."

Hussein then reminded Richards that there was still a debate over whether the Chinese or the English invented the game, but Richards leapt to the defence of his country.

"It started in Sheffield 150 years ago," Richards said, his voice rising. "We started the game and wrote the rules and took it the world. The Chinese may say they own it but the British own it and we gave it to the rest of the world."

Any word yet on whether this'll make FIFA more likely to vote for England in future?

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 17:39 (fourteen years ago)

I can't believe you didn't quote this para:

On his way to dinner at the same function in Doha, Richards slipped and tumbled knee-deep into a hotel swimming pool from where he was rescued by Bolton's chairman, the FA board member Phil Gartside.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

"You might be better off saying don't come. But a World Cup without England, Germany, the Dutch, Danes and Scandinavians. It's unthinkable."

No reports of Spurs or Man City fans getting up to similar afaik - it appears to be a lagging indicator of big club status.

Just named my truck Harry Redknapp. I kick a soccer ball against it at lunch, it's bright red, and it's got a bottle of gin in it right now.

dan m, Thursday, 15 March 2012 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

Surprised at this
The Reds' 3-0 victory over Everton was the first time in more than a year that Liverpool had won a Premier League game in which Gerrard started. The game in question was Liverpool's 3-1 win against Manchester United at Anfield on 6 March 2011 when Dirk Kuyt scored a hat-trick.

Kinda silly for 'arry to try shopping for Hazard now before sewing up third place.

James Mitchell, Saturday, 17 March 2012 09:37 (fourteen years ago)

Watching Fulham-Swansea ... what *is* Moussa Dembele exactly? He never seems to score or assist but I gather ppl rate him, and here he's playing deeper than most of the midfield.

boxall, Saturday, 17 March 2012 16:17 (fourteen years ago)

I've felt that way watching him. He is like current Torres without the expectation imo. "Oh he did well running the channels and linking play and stuff. Didn't score though. Oh well, they've got the Pog for that." With Torres its not "they've got the Pog for that" it is "they spent how much and he doesn't score?"

a hoy hoy, Saturday, 17 March 2012 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

was called away from my stream but Swansea are up by two now, a second goal for Sigurdsson, very smart fantasy buy pandemic made.

boxall, Saturday, 17 March 2012 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

0-3 now, entirely down to Senderos' ineptitude, that was a worse sequence than I've seen even Djourou have in some time.

boxall, Saturday, 17 March 2012 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

Dembele has been converted into a midfielder no?
