Did you save some key lime pie for me? Where is this Spice House?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

There's an entire pie left! There are two Spice Houses, one on Wells (closer to the action) and one in Evanston (in the northern burbs.) I don't know how much more time you have here, but you MUST GO. They have freshly ground spices of ALL varieties. See: thespicehouse.com for more deets. It's world-class, I think.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Thank you, Kelz! Some day I will visit Chicago....

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Get off at the Sedgwick brown line stop and walk EAST on North Ave, then turn RIGHT at Wells - it's about a block down. I think those are accurate directions. Is there a better way to get there?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Don't worry Laurel, someday all of the incompetent people will smell like dog shit and we can evade them simply and efficiently using only our olfactory senses.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

B. is very excited about this news so we will be going. Also there will be a midnight pie raid, key lime pie is one of my favorites.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Laurel-I care! And most of my days here are like that, which is why I am leaving. I just got an e-mail from a friend who just started a new job in Philly saying that she spilled hot & sour soup in her new company laptop, so that makes me feel a bit better about my day.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

xpost - Oh good! I want to hear about all of the stuff you bought. I recommend everything they have there, but don't leave without some cinnamon. Best part about the Spice House: not expensive. Also, taste the cacao nibs. They're great and your vanilla ice cream will thank you.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

There's a cool fish store near the Spice House on Wells, too. Like, Finding Nemo fish.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:08 (twenty years ago)

which cinnamon do you recommend?

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Also, I started a new thread. It's selfish & I'm mainly needing opinions about which bar to have my party at, if any of youses have idears.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

And the House of Glunz, the oldest wine store in America, is at Division & Wells. You don't have to care about wine to enjoy it - it's like an old musty gothic house.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

And the teensy ginger nibs too, put some of those puppies in a butter cookie, feed them to someone you want to influence and you will get anything you want.

I like the China Tsungsing (Tungsing?) because it's slightly spicier, but the Vietnamese stuff is TOP NOTCH.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I am glad you are not trying to "influence" me, for I would be powerless to resist.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

I like the idea of amanda trying to cajole her husband into doing things by dangling cookies with ginger in them.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Unfortunately for your purposes, Amanda, I am not susceptible to ginger. But try Thin Mints!

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, perhaps you would enjoy my mint-in-the-middle butter cookie?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Yessssssss, perhaps. *Tents fingers and waves them a la Evil Genius*

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

now my brain is very confused as to whether i'm craving mint cookies or those trader joe's ginger ones. better to crave the ginger ones, since i actually have some. gmorning.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Let the record show that Trader Joe's Triple Ginger cookies are fucking awesome.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Imagine a small, round butter cookie about the size of a quarter. Small, apparently harmless. Inside of the cookie is one single Junior mint. Mmmmm. On top there's a light drizzle of melted junior mint. Also done with Andes mints.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

TRIPLE ginger?! Are they of the ginger snap variety or more like those sandwich cookies?

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

I currently brush my teeth with 'gingermint' toothpaste.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Know what mints are also good? Those "After Eight" mints. Mom would always get them for 'special' occasions. Love those things.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Mmmm ginger snaps. I am currently in love with Carr's ginger-lemon cremes. I've been eating two every single day with tea at 3:30pm.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

You & your cookies are hilarious & excellent.

I can't let myself do that at the moment since I'm on the 'new' health plan. I think I've lost two pounds, though!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:05 (twenty years ago)

i am in full agreement about the TJ ginger cookies, of course.

fuck breakfast/lunch, maybe i'll just have those.

they're not sandwich cookies, they're like gingersnaps, only they taste way way way more gingery than most gingersnaps. i never realized that gingersnaps were supposed to taste like ginger until i had the TJ's kind.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

also, they have chunks of candied ginger in them.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:07 (twenty years ago)

sweet jesus. i'm totally getting some!!! fuck a health plan!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

i like to eat chunks of candied ginger. they also probably aren't too terribly bad for you - remember the meringue cookies?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

xp you will not regret it. they rock. when my appetite is iffy (which it is sometimes), they're one of those things that i can always eat, because they're just so so good.

ginger is good for your digestion, too. and, no, they're not too bad for you, as cookies go. gingersnaps generally have less sugar than most cookies, for one thing.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:10 (twenty years ago)

OMG HandyManda -- the Andes mint cookies are like my dream food. Have you tried the Russel Stover's French Mint bars, too? Their lovely smooth consistency makes me think they'd melt well, although I've never tried.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Mmm, I've never tried those, but they sound gooooood. The cookies are pretty easy to make too - just make a butter cookie recipe and then wrap a blob of dough around the mint (all the way around) and drizzle some on top when you take them out of the oven. Try not to make them too big, because they're pretty rich.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

I can't bake worth a damn, but I made red curry last night, and it was bad ass. I heart my spice grinder.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

OMG, I can't make red curry to save my own life. How did you do it?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

I also love the TJ ginger cookies. Also, I'm eating a LOT of thin mints right now because someone brought in 5 boxes of them to work.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Sarah, I am big-time craving Thin Mints -- I bought 4 boxes but they haven't been delivered yet!!

Ginger is excellent for settling the stomach, along with anise & peppermint & a few other things.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm a big believer in Sprite, myself.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Red Curry: I used a variation on the the old standby J0y 0f C00king recipe. Coriander seeds, peppercorns, etc. Toast 'em up, grind 'em up. Food process with lemongrass, lime juice, garlic, galangal, cilantro, red chiles (I used dry and fresh), shallots, and salt. Mash in shrimp paste and you're done.

Then you fry the paste in some oil, mix it with coconut milk, let it thicken a little and stew with your vegetables/tofu/chicken/whatever. Flavor with fish sauce, basil, and sugar at the end.

I'm going to go eat my leftovers now!

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:31 (twenty years ago)

That sounds more involved than what I tried. I guess I'll try again...[sigh].

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm feeling particularly broke today. I've been trying to get a handle on my finances, but it feels like trudging through mud, even with my great raise!

Sorry to be a downer in the middle of yum food talk. The Thin Mints were indeed as wonderful as you're imagining.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah... I tend to get way overly involved and it ends up taking forever. Perhaps it's the beers I drink while I cook?

I get the pre-made curry pastes a lot, and they're really good too. Last night I was just feeling like throwing down.

xpost

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:36 (twenty years ago)

it's understandable. finances are scary. i just had to ask my dad (argh no no no) for money the other day because i always confuse what i have and what i can afford. i have great new glasses though.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Yay for new glasses!

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

Yay! I love the Newman-O's ginger cookies.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Where is Jay today??

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Good call. I'll try calling him.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 19:16 (twenty years ago)

He stayed home today.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Lucky boyo. Is he sickish or having a mental health day?

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Just finalized some plans - I'm spending this weekend here (with a special friend of mine ;) ): http://www.duvallhouse.net/
