can't imagine a team worse at set plays than spurs right now.

hmm, walker gets away with a kick out, so he might be banned for a few games

happy st teeteringham's day

nortei nortey (cozen), Saturday, 10 March 2012 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

Decent effort by Spiders at the end there but they looked a bit toothless ultimately. Everton are effective though - wouldn't want to be a team on a poor run facing them at the moment.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 10 March 2012 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

the end was pretty entertaining in a frantic, nervous laughter kind of way

mizzell, Saturday, 10 March 2012 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

Jeez, if Liverpool lose on Tuesday we could in theory be bottom half of the table by the time we play again.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 10 March 2012 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

Time to jump ship, IK. Come over to the dark side.

Ismael's joke apostasy is one of my favorite things about ILF in 2012.

boxall, Saturday, 10 March 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

comparing Liverpool this season and last

2010/11 6th 39 points 11 wins 35 goals

2011/12 7th 39 points 10 wins 30 goals

Number None, Saturday, 10 March 2012 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

30 goals?! I hadn't noticed it was anything like that bad.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 10 March 2012 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

15 home, 15 away

Number None, Saturday, 10 March 2012 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

lol home, lol away

at least their shitness is symmetrical

Number None, Saturday, 10 March 2012 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

Van Persie has 30 goals in all competitions this year, same number as Liverpool in the league.

Long live King Kenny!

If only he could read.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 11 March 2012 08:49 (fourteen years ago)

Harry must stay, surely?

This piece on Villas Boas is good on the dysfunctionality at Chelsea, and where loyalties lie. The summer there is going to be fascinating, especially as I can't think who might actually end up in the job. Rafa really does seem like the obvious candidate now.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 March 2012 08:55 (fourteen years ago)

wishful thinking from a scarred Liverpool fan?

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Sunday, 11 March 2012 08:56 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe. He'd be a poor fit for the other half of what Abramovich wants to achieve, other than being great at knock outs, but he'd be good for cutting out the dead wood. I had been coming round to the idea of his having another go at Anfield, but he can't wait around forever and there aren't many other elite candidates for the Chelsea job. Capello would be an even less attractive option you'd think.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 March 2012 09:33 (fourteen years ago)

Villas-Boas knew he was running out of time but although the decision to sack him was made within minutes of the match ending at the Hawthorns last weekend, Roman Abramovich agonised until the early hours of Sunday morning about whether he should give the young Portuguese, whom he admired and liked, one more game.

Abramovich had been agonising for weeks, ever since he turned up unannounced at the training ground to observe the manager at work and gauge the mood in the camp. Chelsea went on to throw away a three-goal lead against Manchester United and lose miserably to Everton on Feb 11. Abramovich changed his mind that evening. He decided that maybe, as some in his so-called 'golden circle’ had been arguing since the international break in early September, Villas-Boas could not carry on.

Pure fiction? No one knows what Abramovich thinks about anything.

Rafa for Spurs obv. Reckon its a better 'project' for him.

He's got a twitch. If Wenger behaved like that it would be back page news.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 11 March 2012 09:50 (fourteen years ago)

gotta be dalglish out, don't know a liverpool fan who thinks differently. the whole "he can't be sacked" thing is just from your ilx-style "i fear my shoes are developing a sense of entitlement" person. obv there's a hardcore in liverpool who might disagree but i foresee no controversy in the forthcoming shuffle upstairs with "i did a job for the club when they needed me".

just please, no rafa. they have the money and imo aren't miles off having the players to do well.

i've thought all along he'd be shoved into a Director of Football type position soon enough. his appointment always felt like a placeholder, tho a placeholder was probably v. necessary at the time.

Haha what are you talking about?! I did think that tbf (and about Kenny, not the shoes) until Fenway eventually stepped in over the handshake thing. Now I agree with nv though, paradoxically, I think he's got to win the FA Cup for it to happen, because it'd be a nightmare to have him upstairs feeling like he's got unfinished business. Fortunately, he will.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 March 2012 11:06 (fourteen years ago)

The only silver lining to yesterday

would bet my house on liverpool losing this

LG still has a roof over his head.

never in doubt!

I'm going to allow this! (LocalGarda), Sunday, 11 March 2012 11:15 (fourteen years ago)

tbh I think Dalglish probably has enough humility and enough love for the club that he'll happily step aside when the appropriate time comes

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 March 2012 11:18 (fourteen years ago)

i agree completely, i was sort of ridiculing the prevalent theory that somehow getting rid of him would be some huge acrimonious struggle. it really won't.

I'm going to allow this! (LocalGarda), Sunday, 11 March 2012 11:23 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not quite sure about that. That he was willing publicly to throw his hat in at time of Hodgson's appointment isn't a great omen for a smooth transition. Though I guess if there was an agreed successor lined up like, say, Villas Boas, it'd be a lot easier.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 March 2012 11:27 (fourteen years ago)

the perceived turmoil at the club at the end of Hodgson's tenure was very different to any likely situation now

Kony Montana: "Say hello to my invisible friend" (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 March 2012 11:29 (fourteen years ago)

I meant the start of Hodgson's tenure - remember KD was appointed to find successor to Rafa but nominated himself instead. But yes, the club's in a better place all round, except in the league.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 March 2012 11:34 (fourteen years ago)

aren't miles off having the players to do well.

really?

Number None, Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:07 (fourteen years ago)

If Spurs somehow end up finishing 5th I will be v amused.

pandemic, Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:10 (fourteen years ago)

they're underachieving imo NN, not saying they should be topping the table but they have played most of the top sides off the park at one point this season. good defence too.

I'm going to allow this! (LocalGarda), Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:14 (fourteen years ago)

I agree with that actually. One goalscorer and more mobility in the centre of the park and they'd be good against anyone. I realise I'm asking for a whole new midfield and the return of Torres here, but hey.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:18 (fourteen years ago)

gotta be dalglish out, don't know a liverpool fan who thinks differently.

i dont agree. i think some of the signings didnt work out this year but ive no problem with him staying on tbh

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:19 (fourteen years ago)

Yesterday was the first full game i've watched in a while but they were alarmingly shit, with Charlie Adam in particular barely looking like a footballer. There's a lot of average and past it players in that squad. I'd argue that it needs a complete revamp

Number None, Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:21 (fourteen years ago)

that's performance not ability. as i say, the evidence is there that they can wallop good teams, both man u and city have been given a run for their money.

I'm going to allow this! (LocalGarda), Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:22 (fourteen years ago)

Darren Dein's mouthpiece:

Arsenal face the prospect of losing a fifth player to Manchester City in three years after Robin van Persie provisionally agreed a contract with the Premier League leaders that promises to make him the division's best paid footballer.

City's proposal, which sources close to both club and player say has been accepted, is worth £10.9 million (Dh63.05m) a year, a deal that will place him atop the club's pay scale once Carlos Tevez, whose contract was worth £12.55m including loyalty bonuses, is sold this summer.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

Hey, The Sunday Times are saying RVP has agreed to join City. Great!

Number None, Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:50 (fourteen years ago)

ha

Number None, Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:50 (fourteen years ago)

xpost Really, you think Dalglish has done enough to justify staying in the job? The fact that so many of the signings didn't work out is precisely the problem. It's not that any of them are poor players, but they're certainly not good enough for the fees paid, and when you make that kind of expenditure you know the League Cup isn't a good enough return. Charlie Adam? Stewart Downing? Liverpool marquee signings? Puts me in mind of Jimmy Carter …

Viva Brother Beyond (ithappens), Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:52 (fourteen years ago)

Rumours also abound that Pogba has signed a new contract with Utd. He's on the bench today

Number None, Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:53 (fourteen years ago)

Oh dear, poor Arsenal. Does this mean we have five more months of the story while they negotiate a fee?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:56 (fourteen years ago)

fancy Swansea to put City to the sword today. Well maybe not, but Savic is playing

Number None, Sunday, 11 March 2012 13:57 (fourteen years ago)

Probably gone first week of transfer window instead of a fight till almost the end re: Nasri.

Podolski has been signed - that's hadly any cover, but by even trying to get any sort of replacement etc. its an attempt to avoid the fiasco at the start of last season.

Getting back line signings as impt.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 11 March 2012 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

or nearly agreed, from the gossip nearly true stories anyway.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 11 March 2012 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

It's also taking as read that Tevez is leaving I notice, which I think they have to do for Financial Fair Play. Will be interesting to see how little the signing club manages to pay for him, even if the rest of it will be tedious.
