They do say something a little bit sad about the adult making them, sort of like over-obsessiveness with a sports team.

I did once watch an "Unsolved Mysteries" episode set there. I think it was the one about a whole town that had never heard R&B.

Oops, you're right. 2001-ish is about my cut off date. By the time Amerie's "1 Thing" had come out my sisters' and my taste in music were no longer identical.

tanuki, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

i definitely had a subtle-but-total change of hearing on modern r&b since i was a teenager, even 20-sth. i can't even explain when or why it happened tbh. at the time stuff like boyz II men and new jack (in a small town high school) seemed like boring fake thin sounding crap for idiots and women ("nothing to me about my life" indeed). now i'm less pent up about shit and i could hear pop r&b hits from any era all day and be totally happy.

reading a lot more pro-pop and and pro-r&b criticism/discussion in the past decade probably helped a lot. for an unfamiliar and disliked genre sometimes you have to read and think your way into it first. and then it all becomes recontextualized and your ear for it changes. certainly songs like 'pony' really stuck out even at the time

probably not the right thread for this tho

goole, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

why am I the only person who like R&B who hates "Pony"

thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

maybe it's because you're a classically-trained musician ... or maybe you're not the only one?

now i'm less pent up about shit and i could hear pop r&b hits from any era all day and be totally happy

what i dislike about the pro-r&b faction on ILM is the assumption that you're either "pent up" or unfamiliar w/ poptimist criticism if you don't like r&b

i mean, i like "pony" and "1 thing" and usher and timberlake as much as the next person (which is to say i could blast it 10 times in a row no problem) but fuck me if that means i need to get deep in the intricacies of the dream or janelle monae or whatever

the late great, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

The intricacies of Janelle Monae?

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

well hold on now, Janelle is superdope

The-Dream is super overrated tho

word? what town?

In MN we lived in Deer River ("Canadian border" was an exaggeration, tbh) which is west of Duluth somewhere. In MT we lived near a place called Condon, which is 90 miles north of Missoula and 70 south of Kalispell.

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

i wasn't trying to be prescriptive there. i was absolutely pent-up and not-even-subliminally angry about music as a younger dude! i had a pretty narrow range of what musical expression and para-musical heroism was supposed to be.

xp oh i'm sorry eric were you hoping to find a catalog of steady lols herein

goole, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

Ooh I like that song "Patches" up above. I could dance to it, which is kinda my litmus, if only it didn't have those talking slow-downs.

drawn to them like a moth toward a spanakopita (Laurel), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

thanks to iTunes buyers the words "Janelle Monae and fun" can be written in the same sentence

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

also can i say that reading a lot more pro-pop and and pro-r&b criticism/discussion in the past decade, particularly on ILM, has actually kind of turned me off pop music
