Animal Planet is running a "Cat-a-thon" today, so no doubt this poor idiot's going to appear at some point.

imagine you hung out with this guy. there'd be a moment like at the bar or at the end of dinner. he'd take off his glasses, and you could see the glasses-crease on the side of his face, and the flat top of the sideburn.imagine how horrible that would be.
imagine how horrible that would be.
I can't stop thinking about this post.

Cats really aren't that hard to figure out: the crazy ones need to play hunt, the mean ones are hurt or don't have a quiet spot to be alone, the ones with bad bathroom behavior are sick or have a grungy, badly placed or inappropriate litter box, and they all appreciate a little cat style communication (blinking, purr-talking, petting)
This does not fix all problems, and is an oversimplification. There are so many different things that can be going on with cats.

I've seen two shows and both contained interesting cat stuff and pretty amazing babes who happened to be the owner of the cats (one was a yoga instructor and the other one's cat was called minibar) - which made me suspect he only helped good looking women with cat issues, but that's entirely based on the only two shows I've seen - but um yeah, cool dude.

lol, j/k. i agree with you in general, but but i have experienced a number of cat problems that don't fit easily into one of those groups. imbalances in dominance behavior among multiple cats, for instance, or the psychological/behavioral consequences of improper weaning (can be a real problem with kittens lost or abandoned very early on). there are general "rules" that apply to most cats, and i think you described them quite well, but like any living thing, there's still an enormous amount of variety from individual to individual. some cats are just outliers, have weird little fur-brains.

Declawing and abuse can both have damaging psychological effects on a cat, and I don't think the solutions are always as simple as giving the cat space or toys, etc.
― Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Saturday, 10 March 2012 19:57 (fourteen years ago)
No, that's fair enough -- but I think about my "rules" as better describing the sorts of things humans can do to help cats than a description of various forms of cat psychology. For example, I had a cat with extreme aggression problems that were certainly part physiological (hyperthyroidism), and probably (but I could never know this) in part the result of trauma AND improper weaning. A real mess, but he was fixable, and it wasn't that complicated a fix -- the right meds, and learning the difference between scared defensive aggression and overly aggressive play, and comforting the one and getting the other into shape by combining withdrawal of attention for really bad behavior and getting the good craziness out on toys -- it made a huge difference, and he became an amazing friend to me. Domestic cats are social animals and liking the people you depend on and making them like you is a matter of survival -- that simplifies the whole thing. But it is also true that I always start with a cat by seeing if it reacts to my peaceful attempts at communication, and I don't take the ones who don't home. I do think that a cat who is not completely feral and not brain damaged or -- and yes, I admit there are cats like this -- really stupid can learn to live with people.

That looks way too cluttered and he's got a litter box next to his bed and his desk, which is going to stink and result in a pound of litter in the sheets. D-

Anybody familiar with Jackson’s show My Cat from Hell (currently filming Season 3) has witnessed—and marveled at—how the man connects with cats, winning over even the toughest cases with his trademark “cat mojo.” (Like MCFH, the book includes lots of practical advice about behavior, nutrition, and environmental enrichment—or “catification”—for readers, whether their cats are from Hell or not.)

So um, the one who owned Minibar on the show is a model/singer who was discovered by Trent Reznor, apparently. Heard the music, then saw the face, then thought, "wait a minute, where DO I know her from?"
