feel like public flags turns the system from a way to direct the mods' attention to troublesome posts/posters into like a reified system of public opprobrium. would really just increase the potential for jokeyness.

I haven't FP'ed anyone posts since the switch from SBs, but I half decided that if I did, I would post here why I did it.

I have to say that personally I'm just sort of sad that I never really got to get rolling with the SB system before it was gone, because I'm the kind of weird, narrow-topic nerd ILXor that never gets into the like 4,000-post clusterfuck threads and is sort of left feeling left out and confused when y'all start reminiscing about all the great times that (name) ruined ILX and you all SBed him and I'm like, man...I wish I'd been a part of that.

I think I probably SBed Geir once and that might be it. But it seems like the new system is really missing the angle of "I want it registered, not necessarily to any specific human who has to go through and look at these stupid things, that such-and-such poster is being a really tedious pain in the ass whose one-sided, attention-seeking trolling is derailing good conversation and just kind of crashing the party of a thread that was really groovy until they showed up." Like, you don't want the site to become this echo chamber of always-agreeing sameness, sure, but that's never going to happen, and in the meantime it'd be nice for the small, delicate threads to be able to do their thing without the Morbses of the world coming in and sucking up all the air.

What precisely is the scenario where someone would be racking up the SBs but not providing any posts worth FPing? I mean, other than "the name of this scenario is ILX".

I believe the procedure is to go off to the riverbank, cut down a reed, yell your grievances into it, and let the river carry away around the bend.

Under SB, you did not necessarily have to click SB on an offending post. As I understand it, part of the whole FP thing is closer mod scrutiny for aspects of actual offensiveness, whereas people definitely got sb'd in the past just for being annoying.

It isn't. People shouldn't be banned "just for being annoying". FP should, ideally, make sure that people are banned only for an actual reason.

(for the record I have never actually SB'ed or FP'ed morbs, although when the bandwagon was going on some threads i was certainly tempted, for the sake of being one of the cool kids)

maybe instead of flagposting people who annoy us we shd just start a thread about why they are annoying. cd maybe jokily call for them to be banned in the title.

you guys are totally missing the point, nothing has changed since sb except that posters aren't automatically banned at 51 (which hadn't been the case for a while anyways.) mods just take a look at flagged posts when it gets up there and make a decision

you can still flag generic posts by posters you don't like & it won't be discarded

I think it's changed in that you need a certain burden of proof that someone is actually saying obviously unconscionable shit - if you're feeling annoyed but there's no post that would convince someone else, then take yourself over to the reeds in the river.

Sure, but they count against the posts, not the poster. Is it really hard to understand, I thought they made it clear with the name change.

OK, so I flagged a post, but it was not about the individual post, but really a "flag user." I too recently got into a fracas over my objections to a poster's habits, so I'll leave it at that. I just wanted to follow through on what I said I'd do.
