Yeah, the main lesson here is that rich people who don't know what they're doing are really quite hilarious.

(it's sort of great. Some wobbly bits. Luigi De Canio fans will be disappointed that the film basically airbrushes his era out)

so fucked

Feel bad for Wolves. Should get AVB in and tell him to show the Premiership what he can really do.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 5 March 2012 09:46 (fourteen years ago)

Haven't seen it yet but it's got echoes of Norwich going down 6-0 there in 2005. I did think Wolves would be alright but it's hard to see anyone coming back from that.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 5 March 2012 10:04 (fourteen years ago)

we had nothing, and we've got maybe 4 Prem quality players tops

Mo Money Mo Johnston (Noodle Vague), Monday, 5 March 2012 11:17 (fourteen years ago)

i can't see why the referee couldn't caution him for his behavior, but in reality a ref will never give a red card then caution the victim of the red card offense for faking the injury the red card was given for.

― wmlynch, Sunday, 4 March 2012 22:53 (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

basically this. nothing to stop the ref doing it. but (1) definitively identifying simulation in a situation when there has in fact been contact is v tough (2) calling a player a liar is somehow more serious than calling him another kind of cheat, and if you get it wrong then you can lose control of the match (3) given the lack of support any ref who tries to systematically clamp down on simulation could expect from fifa, there is no upside.

caek, Monday, 5 March 2012 13:08 (fourteen years ago)

said it a thousand times. monday morning, video panel, 3 match ban the blatant cases of simulation, see how many do it next weekend.

Mo Money Mo Johnston (Noodle Vague), Monday, 5 March 2012 13:16 (fourteen years ago)

totes. just talking about what the ref can do on the pitch. the fa/fifa don't do so many things on monday morning, partly out of misguided loyalty to referees, mostly out of laziness and desire for a simple life.

caek, Monday, 5 March 2012 13:32 (fourteen years ago)

also http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/mar/03/referees-winning-percentage-game-managers

caek, Monday, 5 March 2012 13:32 (fourteen years ago)

Statistics compiled by the match delegates show referees get 92% of major decisions – goals, penalties, red cards etc – right. For assistant referees, the success rate is 99.3%.

caek, Monday, 5 March 2012 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

somehow doubt that includes simulation

caek, Monday, 5 March 2012 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

tv hypes up the split second decisions where mistakes are understandable "he definitely got a touch on the ball blah blah", when i'm sure what aggravates managers and fans more is inconsistent application of the laws - fouls denying clear goalscoring opportunities getting yellows, different standards on serious foul play etc

If 'arry starts going on about mental strength and an extra two per cent of fitness and players being like new signings and not seeing things we'll know some Freaky Friday-style accident has happened.

Kinda disappointing: they had a lot of golden raw material -- sure most won't be able to agree on faves, but that fan pleading for Briatore not to leave while he complains how his ego isn't being further inflated by should-be-grateful fans that dare to protest because he input 35 million into 'the company' ws good.

Main problem was it wouldn't stop with trying to make 'killer' sequences cut from QPR goals/mobile convos/goals against QPR/more 5 sec clueless exec soundbites -- all accompained by yer disgusting indie sd/track. Should have left the camera on some of these meetings for a lot longer, no matter how 'mundane' it might seem -- especially one on savings they were trying to make, another where they were discussing season ticket prices. Should've had more interviews w/fans (tracking opinions as the takeover ws happening and then when it was unravelling with all the sackings), any zine writers, etc.

Badly put together and a missed opportunity to use this to talk about what is happening, which we all know but a documentation of this disaster is required. Switched off halfway through.

Still, great sense of timing -- Chelsea and QPR are 1x Mourinho apart from one another.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 5 March 2012 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

kind of enjoy them showing how Falvio enforcing a substitution leading to a winning goal (to his mind) justified all the fucking around with managers and team selections

Manchester United CEO Gill was one of the participants in the "Business of Sports: Winning Off the Field" panel. One thing he mentioned which caught the attention of those in attendance was that there were new owners of a PL team who didn't know about relegation. "Not sure what the due diligence was there," stated Gill of said owners. I later spoke to Gill directly to clarify erroneous rumors spreading on Twitter that Gill was in fact alluding to Fenway Sports Group's purchase of Liverpool. Gill categorically denied that he had been referencing or inferring that it was FSG in any form and said that he held Liverpool's owners in the highest regard. "I would never say anything negative about John W Henry, ever." However, when I put it to Gill that the party he was in fact referring to was Venky's (it's long been believed in some quarters of the industry that the mechanics of relegation was just one among various things Venky's were unaware of when acquiring Blackburn), Gill said nothing but gave a broad smile.

Feel even worse for AVB after stories like this.

boxall, Tuesday, 6 March 2012 04:01 (fourteen years ago)

Just when you think these guys are running out of ways to be hateful. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be Ramires and Mata giving AVB a sarcastic wave at 8:59:58 every morning. Like managers getting all anal about punctuality is unique to him anyway.

The hint that any new manager will have his hands tied by Financial Fair Play is dead interesting though. Especially if they don't finish top four and have a mammoth rebuilding task off the back of Europa League income.

How did we miss news of NAMING RIGHTS SUPERMARKET RETAIL CHAIN?

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy added: “We are delighted that Sainsbury’s will become the supermarket provider in the Northumberland Development Project. This will be one of the largest supermarkets of its kind in London and will help bring a greater vibrancy and attract new trade to the area.”

That's right, Daniel. Giant supermarkets are famed for the footfall they put through other shops in the same area. Not for driving other shops out of business.
