Livestream technology is now such that I could watch(read: listen to) all of this on my phone as I drove home last night.

just watched the whole thing, convinced jim rash is the funniest one there

if you ever leave me peggy, leave some propane at my door (zachlyon), Sunday, 4 March 2012 21:38 (fourteen years ago)

Unless I'm wrong, he's the only proper improv type in the cast, isn't he? Jacobs, Pudi, YNB are all trad actors, Glover and McHale are stand-ups, not sure about Brie and Jeong.

William Bloody Swygart, Monday, 5 March 2012 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

Jeong started as a standup. Actually, he started as a doctor, and then became a standup.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Monday, 5 March 2012 00:53 (fourteen years ago)

i always assumed rash was a trad actor who just fit the role really well

if you ever leave me peggy, leave some propane at my door (zachlyon), Monday, 5 March 2012 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

Glover is an improv dude. McHale a proper actor. Both have only started doing stand up post-Community.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 5 March 2012 01:22 (fourteen years ago)

well, JM got into standup via The Soup a while before Community, but yeah, both those guys came to it after being on TV

some dude, Monday, 5 March 2012 01:31 (fourteen years ago)

Glover's not really got an improv core, he definitely came up through sketch and formal writing

McHale was doing stand-up years before Community afaik

Shirley could be an even better character if she started addressing people as "Stinker" or "my little pumpkins"

some dude, Monday, 5 March 2012 01:49 (fourteen years ago)

all the talk (from harmon, actors, writers, fans) about "how this episode really tells you why these people are friends" or "we really wanted to give shirley more depth this episode" etc. really kind of diminishes my enjoyment of the show. it feels like it doesn't leave any room for viewers to make heir own judgments, and anyway the "emotional" beats are generally the worst in this series. i should probably just attempt to watch it in a vacuum.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Monday, 5 March 2012 03:19 (fourteen years ago)

Jim Rash is a groundlings/UCB-type; I believe he taught improv there, if my FB/LJ friends are anything to go from.

One day somebody will realize that Ken Jeong is best when doing straight deadpan. I still hold that the funniest he's ever been onscreen was Knocked Up.

Spleen of Hearts (kingfish), Monday, 5 March 2012 03:33 (fourteen years ago)

Actually, I don't have a problem with them explicitly breaking down the show and how they wanted the characters to work. There's something in the construction & intelligence of the show that connects to me emotionally, even with it all exposed. It's like it operates on a level where the impact of the magic trick is only heightened by showing everyone how it's done. We all know we're watching this very meticulously assembled thing, and the intelligence involved with it and what it needs from the viewers only makes us like it more.

Spleen of Hearts (kingfish), Monday, 5 March 2012 03:42 (fourteen years ago)

except that it DOESN'T really seem that meticulously assembled, really, and to me that's what all the backchannels etc. reveal. i mean for all the talk they do you'd think the show would be of a bit more formal interest in terms of balancing plotlines, etc. but it's really not that much more sophisticated than a lot of other shows, except in its humor--which is what gets talked about the least, it seems.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Monday, 5 March 2012 03:45 (fourteen years ago)

i think someone needs to go back to the dan harmon circles reeducation camp, where circles

One day somebody will realize that Ken Jeong is best when doing straight deadpan. I still hold that the funniest he's ever been onscreen was Knocked Up.

The deleted scene with him, Katherine Heigl, and Adam Scott is insanely hilarious. Scott loses it, and Heigl sounds like she's about to hyperventilate.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Monday, 5 March 2012 04:12 (fourteen years ago)

Pt. 14 on the paleyfest with the spoilers bit was hilarious.

i think they released an animated short today too, but i haven't watched it yet.

Damn straight. I thought the season 3 trailer was special, but this...this is the John Coltrane of mid-season sitcom teaser trailers.

we can be gyros just for one day (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:33 (fourteen years ago)

Also caught a few glimpses of what Harmon called "either the best or the worst thing in television history," just Annie and Abed in the Dreamatorium for the whole episode.

we can be gyros just for one day (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

Surely Abed should be Luke and Jeff Han? Britta as Bib Fortuna and Shirley the Ewok are genius though.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

Abed has already dressed up as Han on the show, though.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Friday, 9 March 2012 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

was the new one last nite?

Lamp, Friday, 9 March 2012 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

IIRC he had to grab being Han before Jeff slouches into the role by default

Bill Carter piece in today's NYTimes.

we can be gyros just for one day (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think every genre exercise the show does counts as "parody", which Carter wrote like 3x.

I do like that this quote made it in there:

Mr. Harmon appreciates the praise and said he had no quarrel with NBC’s executives, adding that they were supportive beyond the call of duty, “especially when they are under such pressure — they’re in a knife fight with Univision for ratings, for gosh sakes"

Spleen of Hearts (kingfish), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

Britta as Jacko looks hilarious.
