His father was an excellent photographer, but more classically fashion-oriented and I think TR's schtick is a pushback against that. BR was also a complete scumbag as well, iirc, and had his emotional and drug issues on top of it. In some ways I like BR better.

TR's moment in the 90's with the CK ads are his high point, I think, and of that era I think TR has been lapped by Lachappelle and Von Unwerth in terms of being the fine-art/fashion/pop crossover hit (I guess Annie, too, but I find her cold and distant. I think an argument that her recent work crosses into fine modern portraiture that fits in w, say, john singer sargent or Ingres, if you want to go back that far, in terms of "accurate" portraiture that fits in w/ a given time).

As for him being a skeezy dude, I think one only has to look at politicians wrt abuse of power, etc, to see that who terry richardson does or does not expose himself to is largely irrelevant in the grander scheme of dudes fucking, or wanting to fuck girls.

wrt sensibility he does have a certain design to his shoots, tho the recent stuff is really treading heavily into Helmut Newton territory, if it wasn't there already.

A side note, though sort of related to artistry v. sentibility, I am 100% convinced that photography at that level (celebrity portrait and high advertising) is based entirely on your ability to direct talent, and if he can get results from people then he has done his job, regardless of who he wants to stick his dick in. Some people may be less forgiving of this behavior, but I think you know what you're doing and who you're dealing with when dealing w/ TR...

A followup to that last part, 10 seconds on Flickr will show you that any cocksucker with a 600.00 can take a properly exposed photograph. It's how you deal with the other shit that makes you

a) good

b) useful to the rest of the world

Waxahachie Swap (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 1 March 2012 03:22 (fourteen years ago)

God she looks awful in that interview. I was hoping the still pics were mostly just bad angles and stuff but her face is all messed up and puff. I mean maybe she is sober but she certainly seems sort of off. Sad. :/

I remember reading an article with him at least a decade ago where he said that he didn't care about the technical aspects of photography at all and did a lot of shoots using an old point and shoot camera. For him it was all about the subject matter and how to manipulate and capture it.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Thursday, 1 March 2012 03:39 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah that was part of his aesthetic. I am resonably certain that he as learned how to manipulate light and now shoots w/ bigger cameras. but a camera is a camera is a camera, honestly. It's the wizard not the wand.

wrt lachappelle, his negatives are notoriously shitty and his printer does most of the work. She (used to, anyway) get all those colors n shit the old fashioned way, which makes her a legit MASTER printer.

haha what???

"is he a skeezy dude? well politicians are worse so it doesn't matter QED"

face depalma (stevie), Thursday, 1 March 2012 07:52 (fourteen years ago)

meaning: broader condemnation of acceptability/history/that's-the-way-things-are of fucking or wanting to fuck girls and using their station to do it should not begin or end with TR

Waxahachie Swap (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 1 March 2012 14:17 (fourteen years ago)

Also: I am an excellent photographer, but have not managed to parlay that into fucking girls 94/7 and this is my failing more than anything else imo

Waxahachie Swap (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 1 March 2012 14:18 (fourteen years ago)

94/7 is an impossible target.

Mark G, Thursday, 1 March 2012 14:23 (fourteen years ago)

stevie otm, I read that sentence and was like... uh, I don't think we're criticizing TR as bringing down western society, just that using a fucked-up power dynamic is bad news. If he's photographing celebrities and doing crazy shit and they're ok with it and they both like the final product, fine. If he's photographing someone less powerful than himself who doesn't necessarily have any recourse -- who, if they said "TR is an exploitative sleaze" it would ruin HER career and not his -- then that's a bad deal and the sort of exploitation that photography does not need.

TR and LL paired up is just kind of a question of who is benefiting more from it, and by benefiting I probably mean "who is looking sleazier"

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 1 March 2012 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

that article doesn't make a great case for the claim that not playing along w/ terry richardson will ruin your career.

it does raise an interesting question about what constitutes sexual harassment in a sexualized work environment - but I don't think it answers the question so well

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2012 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

Does it beg the question tho?

Mark G, Thursday, 1 March 2012 15:58 (fourteen years ago)

not sure what you mean by that

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2012 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

Pedantry over the use/misuse of the phrase "beg the question": classic or dud

pareilles à celles auxquelles l'étiquette de la cour assujettit (Michael White), Thursday, 1 March 2012 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

exactly

i've heard people use it in a third way lately: to mean "avoiding the question"

When Debbie Harry of the band Blondie left the Mercer Hotel on Sunday, photographers crowded around the 66-year-old. Several of the snappers report believing that they were shooting photos of 25-year-old Lindsay Lohan, who had hosted "SNL" the night before.

Harry did appear rather Lohan-like, with her platinum blonde, face-framing fringe and aviator sunglasses visible amidst her hooded jacket. The image looks very similar to one snapped of Lohan two days before, as she exited the same hotel wearing similar sunglasses. The two women do share a similar complexion and face structure, despite their 41 year age difference.

I don't think Debbie Harry could pull off portraying Lindsay's daughter

Amanda Seyfried would be a shoe-in, though
