Arsenal and Manchester City will play each other in the inaugural ‘China Cup’, a one-off match in Beijing’s ‘Bird’s Nest’ Stadium on Friday, July 27, kick-off 8pm local time.
At least we won't have sold RvP to them by then.

ironically, given his bone composition

Scott Parker is England captain. If anyone cares

Number None, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 11:36 (fourteen years ago)

I can't find myself getting excited about Podolski. He was a bit rubbish at Bayern when they actually eexpected him to perform. Still, he's hopefully a step up from Arshavin.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 11:49 (fourteen years ago)

It's Arsenal going for a *name* player that's significant imo. He's a step up in status from every other signing bar Arshavin for the last what, ten years?

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 11:52 (fourteen years ago)

poor gervinho, nasri, arteta, chamakh, campbell, baptista and reyes. forgotten in time.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 11:54 (fourteen years ago)

One day hopefully we can go for both a *name* player and an *awesome* player in one.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 11:55 (fourteen years ago)

Podolski's got 95 caps and does well in big tournaments, he's a league up from those other guys

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:04 (fourteen years ago)

that's why he's not Arsenal enough

FPocalypto! (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:05 (fourteen years ago)

lol germany caps mean shit to me post-mertesacker

/jaded

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:07 (fourteen years ago)

holy shit, Mertesacker is 27? I thought he was about early thirties

Number None, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:09 (fourteen years ago)

is he fuck a league up from chamakh

steep? that's where i'm off hiking (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:09 (fourteen years ago)

and i man, really who is this podolski guy when compared to gervinho, one of the greatest players of the moder- oh fuckit i've lost the will

steep? that's where i'm off hiking (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:11 (fourteen years ago)

Podolski is a baby, even by professional footballer standards. Can see him doing well if he's brought in to replace Van Persie and expected to be the focal point of a team going for 4th. If he comes in to be in the same team as RVP and help Arsenal to challenge for the title then he'll bottle it.

pandemic, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:19 (fourteen years ago)

wow, that's depressing

Number None, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:22 (fourteen years ago)

He is probably better than Arshavin tho

pandemic, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:25 (fourteen years ago)

tellya, when arshavin starts seeing his wages go back to zenit levels he'll be a worldbeater again

steep? that's where i'm off hiking (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:27 (fourteen years ago)

I remember Eamon Dunphy confidently declaring Arshavin "one of the best players in the world" after the quarter-final against Holland in Euro 2008. Next game: "we've had the wool pulled over our eyes with this guy, Bill". His Arsenal career in microcosm.

Number None, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:30 (fourteen years ago)

dunphy and his woolly eyes eh

steep? that's where i'm off hiking (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:32 (fourteen years ago)

Arshavin just needs to move to LFC. He scores with every shot at Anfield iirc

pandemic, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:34 (fourteen years ago)

arsenal were robbed in that game, i remember the outraged emails i exchanged at the time with my lfc correspondents

steep? that's where i'm off hiking (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:35 (fourteen years ago)

We'd need to buy a midfield capable of creating the opportunity first

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:35 (fourteen years ago)

I though we just did that? Oh no we sold/shipped them out on loan. My mistake.

pandemic, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:37 (fourteen years ago)

ismael and his ever-expanding 'we'

steep? that's where i'm off hiking (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:38 (fourteen years ago)

Think Arsenal are played 2 won 2 when they have 'superfan' IK in the 'audience'

pandemic, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:44 (fourteen years ago)

Before this season I think my record w/Arsenal was seen-em-twice, drawn two, inc one heartbreaking cup exit; so I'm keeping us afloat this season afaict

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:49 (fourteen years ago)

Ah no, that's not true, I did steer them to the double in 1998 as well. Wenger owes me.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:53 (fourteen years ago)

Is there any correlation between their results and the hairstyle you're sporting on each visit?

Striking Minors (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:55 (fourteen years ago)

It's the dead celebrities I feel sorry for

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:57 (fourteen years ago)

I've only ever been to 7 LFC games. They have lost 4, drawn 3. I stay away now.

pandemic, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:01 (fourteen years ago)

we drew 0-0 with villa in my only trip to WHL

We've been beaten 3-1 and 1-0 in my trips to old trafford, cheating cunt ref every time iirc (imnrc)

steep? that's where i'm off hiking (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:04 (fourteen years ago)

Only four Liverpool games for me - 1 win, 2 draws, 1 defeat, one managerial heart attack.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:06 (fourteen years ago)

i like podolski a lot

fuck deathcore and metalcore (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:06 (fourteen years ago)

If you carry on seeing 2/3 of your Spurs games at O.T then I fear you are destined to be disappointed Darragh.
xp

pandemic, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:07 (fourteen years ago)

Nice job burying the lead there Ismael!

pandemic, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:08 (fourteen years ago)

was he one of the celebrities ik

steep? that's where i'm off hiking (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:11 (fourteen years ago)

FWIW I've seen Spurs 8 times: 2 wins (including 4-0 against United and 5-2 or 5-1 against Everton), 2 draws, 4 defeats.

Striking Minors (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:14 (fourteen years ago)

(that's not actually "including", is it? more "consisting of")

Striking Minors (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:16 (fourteen years ago)

xp That he ended up at Villa was a worse fate tbh.

To be fair we didn't have a clue til we stopped at a pub after the game. Nowadays I could enjoy ilf banter and questionable puns within seconds.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:16 (fourteen years ago)

Wanna explain Kerr? I only ever really saw him for Germany (could be very good, but i'm glad they have ozil and gotze now) and Bayern (the drizzling shits).

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:18 (fourteen years ago)

Spurs four times - can't actually remember any of the other results (home v Leicester, Portsmouth and Wolves) but I think I had a 100% record 'til Sunday.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:19 (fourteen years ago)

Wish I'd kept track of my Arsenal attendances from the early years when I went five or six times a season as a JG. A few memorable ones include a 3-0 against Newcastle when Vieira scored the goal of the month and Freddie Ljungberg's debut against Man United (4-1 iirc).

Only away trips have been two to Old Trafford (9-2 on aggregate) and Villa in the only game of that season when we conceded three (after being 0-2 up at half time). That was also the game when a parachuting Father Christmas crashed into the upper tier of the stand and broke his leg in the plummet that followed.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:25 (fourteen years ago)

Impressed that ILFers have been on the spot for so much carnage and catastrophe.

pandemic, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:30 (fourteen years ago)

I was at the Johnny Haynes memorial match at Craven Cottage when he died in a car crash, but that wasn't *at* the game thankfully.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:31 (fourteen years ago)

Not saying this in a superior way - but are most people here TV viewers of their clubs rather than match attenders? These last few posts have quite surprised me.

xpost to Local Garda. Nowhere you'd want to drink near Wembley. The Globe at Baker St is always full of cretins. But you certainly want to drink at the central London end of your journey, not the Wembley end.

Viva Brother Beyond (ithappens), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

most ppl everywhere are tv viewers tbf

steep? that's where i'm off hiking (darraghmac), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

Go down Baker Street a bit from the Globe to Paddington Street/Crawford Street if that's the way you're going (runs parallel to the Marylebone Road).

Fizzles, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

xpost As I say, not having a pop.

Viva Brother Beyond (ithappens), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 14:29 (fourteen years ago)

(I am not a Spurs supporter, btw)

Striking Minors (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

I probably go a couple of times a year, but I get quite excited about it when I do. Also it's kind of expensive and time-consuming. No regular side or location - I wish I'd got a season ticket for fulham when I lived nearby and they were only about £350, I don't know why I didn't. I've been trying to remember games all afternoon - it feels like a lot more than I'd thought, but that's more because I've been to plenty of grounds over plenty of years than anything else.

I can only think of the Villa or QPR lads here who might be week-in-week-outers.
