Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 03:13 (fourteen years ago)

I might. I'm just not feeling the devil in me atm. Wish I had thought to post it in 2008 before I unfriended some of the dildos I went to HS with.

garbage corn fan (Je55e), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:19 (fourteen years ago)

God staying out of school due to influx of dildos.

cashmere tears-soaker (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

Rarely has anything blown up my end of facebook quite like the following post (also as jpg):

Monsanto owned companies: Aunt Jemima (Quaker) Jemima (Quaker) Betty Crocker (General Mills) Bisquick Duncan Hines Hungry Jack Jiffy Mrs. Butterworths Pepperidge farms (campbells) Aurora Foods Kraft/Phillip Morris (post cereals) Hershey’s Nestle (Carnation) Holsum (interstate bakeries) Best foods (Knorr) Kellogs Nature Valley Nabisco (Phillip Morris) Pillsbury Heinz Hellmans Hunts KC Masterpiece Frito-lay/Pepsi Delicious brand cookies Famous Amos Keebler/Flowers Industries Banquet Green Giant Healthy Choice (ConAgra) Kid Cuisine (stouffers) Lean Cuisine (stouffers) Marie Callenders Ore-ida Smart ones Power Bar Brand Chef Boyardee Hormel Loma Linda Morningstar Lipton (Unilever) Uncle Ben’s Rice-a-roni/Pasta-roni Tombstone Pizza Totinos Orville Redenbacher Pop Secret Pringles (Procter and Gamble) Coca Cola Minute Made Pepsi Cadbury/Sweppes Capri-sun Cool-aid Ocean Spray V-8 Prego Pasta Sauce Ragu sauce

beachville, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 14:42 (fourteen years ago)

What do they even mean? Those are not owned by... oh it's a facebook thing never mind

valleys of your mind (mh), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 14:47 (fourteen years ago)

Some of them not even companies.

beachville, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

Now, if you said that there's a high possibility that there are products derived from Monsanto-sold crop seeds in pretty much everything in that list, that is highly probable

valleys of your mind (mh), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah, no doubt. But my problem is with the concept being wrong in the first place as well as being horribly disorganized.

beachville, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

Aunt Jemima (Quaker) Jemima (Quaker)

Yeah, like does Quaker have a side product called Jemima to capture the parental offspring hating demographic?

Mark G, Thursday, 1 March 2012 07:30 (fourteen years ago)

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 13:29 (fourteen years ago)

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

I don't really care how people become social activists?

iatee, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

I don't want to watch the video, can someone summarize it for me plz?

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:34 (fourteen years ago)

Video: "Joseph Kony is a bad man." (And he is, indescribably so.)

This, however, is also making the rounds:

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

The video itself is really boring and patronising too, at least usually these things are engaging or funny.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

Please tell me if I have this correct:

A long (relative to most viral videos) video about this murderous, insane Ugandan paramilitary monster goes viral.
People feel a little self-congratulatory about watching/sharing it.
Somebody made a tumblr criticizing the motives/method/efficacy of the organization that made the video.

xp I will read that article TIA

carl agatha, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 22:25 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah pretty much.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 22:26 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, okay, the video is soliciting money for a charity that sounds about as ultimately useful as Children International or whoever those shitbirds that send earnest college students out into the streets to solicit donations from passersby.

Jezebel article was a good summary. Thank you!

carl agatha, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

wait, I'm reading the Jezebel article - and it quotes something saying that their finances haven't been externally audited, but then it links to audited financial statements prepared by an independent firm. The audit shows two years of financials, and maybe it was undertaken in response to the Charity Navigator complaint? It would be quite o_O for an organization with that large a budget to not conduct an independent audit. I'd imagine that some of their institutional funders would require it.

But looking at the financial statements - they show that the vast majority of their expenses were program-related. It is unclear whether the travel and compensation were for people providing services in Africa or not. It is unclear what "production cost" is.

It generally raises my hackles when people that aren't familiar with non-profit accounting and finances make statements like that.

Everyone I saw post that works for Boise State's college radio; I assumed it was some fundraising thing for a radio station (KONY) and an indie band I'd never heard of (Visible Children).

cashmere tears-soaker (Abbbottt), Thursday, 8 March 2012 01:35 (fourteen years ago)

when you ass-ume

cashmere tears-soaker (Abbbottt), Thursday, 8 March 2012 01:37 (fourteen years ago)

looking at their most recent tax return, the three key employees don't make outlandish salaries -- under $100k -- but the weird thing is that there's over $1 million in compensation paid to disqualified persons/entities and no salaries/wages for non-key employees, which is potentially very o_O.

sarahell, Thursday, 8 March 2012 01:50 (fourteen years ago)

Well looks like they've worked out a response:

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 March 2012 05:19 (fourteen years ago)

i definitely have mixed feelings about how they used timeline to structure the beginning part of the narrative.

sarahell, Thursday, 8 March 2012 07:03 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i get a little suspicious when co-workers who generally comment solely about the Kardashians are posting about this nonstop

JoeStork, Thursday, 8 March 2012 08:29 (fourteen years ago)

i saw the video a couple of days ago at the insistence of a friend, and was pretty satisfied today when my feed was overloaded with the appropriate level of skepticism rather than the "omg u must watch this for the babies"

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 8 March 2012 09:42 (fourteen years ago)

People have been posting things like "I don't normally care about politics and this kind of thing but this video really moved me" and I think that says a lot more about the people than the video, I would love if this became some sort of massive awakening that encouraged people to get more involved and pay more attention to global problems etc but I'm not holding my breath.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:33 (fourteen years ago)

clicktivism

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:45 (fourteen years ago)

i of all people really shouldn't be so cynical. like you say, boxedjoy, people paying attention to complicated concerns is a net plus for the world no matter what it is that gets them to pay attention. maybe of the millions who've seen this thing a few (thousand?) will actually get involved in aid work.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 8 March 2012 11:50 (fourteen years ago)

What have you got against babies, Hoos?

carl agatha, Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:28 (fourteen years ago)

Just have to say, I work for a nonprofit that has two stars from Charity Navigator and I'm completely confident in our work.

beachville, Thursday, 8 March 2012 12:38 (fourteen years ago)

Mark G, Thursday, 8 March 2012 13:40 (fourteen years ago)

The ironic thing about this photo is that I HATE guns.

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 14:26 (fourteen years ago)

and people will trust them with their donations. Hmm.
