this is annoying to me - the FPs that you don't understand are invalid? just because you don't get it doesn't mean it doesn't have a reason. maybe we do need explanatory notes.

what was an average number of SBs in a week in the old era?

my old method was i would cumulatively get annoyed at someone until i decided i wanted them gone and i'd just hit suggest ban on the next of their posts i saw. now i have to wait until they post something that's going to make sense as being offensive to hit "flag post" so i can make sure it's going to get counted.

This. SB could mean "this poster is fucking up" but FP suggests that one post in particular is the problem.

what if it was changed it to "Flag Poster"

then, when you clicked on it, a giant picture of flags popped up to soothe your irritation/anger

I haven't FP'ed anyone posts since the switch from SBs, but I half decided that if I did, I would post here why I did it.

Je55e, I admire your openness. I'll follow your lead (although I haven't FPd anyone yet either).

Mods aren't arbitrarily deciding some posts are valid and others not... There are obviously some posts that're just made in error i.e. flagged innocuous posts by non controversial posters on innocuous threads who haven't been involved in a throw down or dispute or CF thread and I was pointing these out as not really contributing to the number of "true" FPs in any way

remy if we're given the right to gang up and remove a poster, we should be able to do that to any poster, not just ones the mod cabal have deemed as "controversial"

yeah p sure my flag posts could be read a innocuous or accidental or w/e but theyre not

i mean im not under the delusion that certain users will be removed but i would like my complaints to be filed under 'serious stuff'

i think what remy is saying is that these are flags that prob wont really add up/matter in the long run. none of them are getting removed.

feel like public flags turns the system from a way to direct the mods' attention to troublesome posts/posters into like a reified system of public opprobrium. would really just increase the potential for jokeyness.

I have to say that personally I'm just sort of sad that I never really got to get rolling with the SB system before it was gone, because I'm the kind of weird, narrow-topic nerd ILXor that never gets into the like 4,000-post clusterfuck threads and is sort of left feeling left out and confused when y'all start reminiscing about all the great times that (name) ruined ILX and you all SBed him and I'm like, man...I wish I'd been a part of that.

I think I probably SBed Geir once and that might be it. But it seems like the new system is really missing the angle of "I want it registered, not necessarily to any specific human who has to go through and look at these stupid things, that such-and-such poster is being a really tedious pain in the ass whose one-sided, attention-seeking trolling is derailing good conversation and just kind of crashing the party of a thread that was really groovy until they showed up." Like, you don't want the site to become this echo chamber of always-agreeing sameness, sure, but that's never going to happen, and in the meantime it'd be nice for the small, delicate threads to be able to do their thing without the Morbses of the world coming in and sucking up all the air.
