I have two!
Is there an airport up there?
Is there a specific town that might offer a nice balance of hunting fishing blah blah for my pop and good places to eat for my mom?

carl agatha, Friday, 24 February 2012 17:26 (fourteen years ago)

There are multiple airports. The one in my (and Katie and T0mas and etc etc) hometown, Houghton, has 2 flights a day to Chicago and the one in Marquette has flights to the Twin Cities, Milwaukee, and Detroit iirc. I'm not sure about the Sault Ste. Marie airport, whether most people use the Canadian side or what. Cancellations due to weather are a problem everywhere, mostly in winter time.

Pretty much every town has plenty of hunting fishing blah blah blah so that's easily covered. As for nice places to eat one of the university towns (Houghton, Marquette, Sault) are probably your best bets. Out of those Marquette wins easily.

The video is upthread, but basically this lady opened a bakery in Humboldt Park then another one in Lincoln Park.

I thought the other one was in Bucktown, not LP. Regardless, she is gross.

carl, why North Dakota?? I've seen quite a lot of that state and it's not especially alluring.

I like the badlands parts of North Dakota.

Jaymc, it was good. Thursday nights are usually low-key there and they have a brand new beer (or 2 or 3) every week.

Jeff, Friday, 24 February 2012 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

whoa whoa whoa whoa
BAAAADLAAAANDS

FYI, Amanda, I typed that one with my thumbs.

Also iPhone wants to autocorrect "Yoopers" to "toilets."
1) impressive!
2) lol!

I didn't realize NORTH Dakota had badlands. Assuming they're in the SW side?

Yeah I don't know, I p much tuned out everything else she had to say.

I showed the interview to my students and they gasped when she started to talk about crack.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

would be p hilar if that video ends up running the place out of business

Wild Flag Post (dan m), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

We can only dream, but like I said a fair amount of people have been defending her for "being honest" so I'm afraid it won't amount to anything.

Amanders and Nick would prolly like this the best, maybe jvc too?

Wild Flag Post (dan m), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

xp I just went and looked at the youtube video of the interview, the racist trib-esque commenters have found it

Wild Flag Post (dan m), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

her apology is really telling too

At the time I made my comments, I truly failed to take into consideration any historical, social, economic or political implications of my words. As an Australian immigrant that settled in Humboldt Park in 2006, I now realize that I spent all my time focusing solely on growing my business and my family, and, like many in society, I never took any time to develop a real understanding of the very community and the history of the people that I have had the fortune of living among for the past 6 years. In other words, I in fact lived "in a vacuum."

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 24 February 2012 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

even when she was saying that she was a clueless privileged bougie, she couldn't resist adding "like many in society"

What does she think the people who lived in her neighborhood were doing? Not focusing on their families and businesses? Recreationally shooting each other and taste-testing crack?!

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 24 February 2012 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

a friend told me today that he had an extra ticket to diamanda galas last night and wanted to invite me but didn’t have my phone number :(

Honestly she probably did really think this.

It appears nowhere else on the website. Just on the page where you look at your actual stub.

carl agatha, Sunday, 26 February 2012 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

What a diverse trio of people presenting you your stub.

It's Dave Chappelle's crackhead character, whose name I cannot remember. I just searched for "Dave Chappelle crackhead."

omg you guys so I got an "action alert" from Planned Parenthood about sending an email to your elected rep about this completely bananas birth control thing, right? So I sent this ANGRY email all about how I'm tired of fighting for basic control over my own body and health and I'm tired of the Dems selling out women and using us as political bargaining chips and I'm suuuper tired of assholes in Illinois introducing bills that are hostile to women into the agricultural committee and I will NEVER EVER vote for another Dem who compromises on women's bodily autonomy, etc. Then I hit send and realized that we were recently redistricted into very pro-choice @nn3 W1ll1@ms's congressional district! And I felt so bad! So I sent her a second email apologizing for my angry email and explaining that I had forgotten she was my rep now and that I loved being in her district and that I would vote for her forever and thanking her for being pro-choice and supporting women.

And she called me!!!! In person! To thank me for the email and let me know that she thinks it's all bullshit, too (she didn't say bullshit, but came close) and that she's not supposed to take things personally in politics but it's hard not to when her colleagues are arguing that women are too stupid to make their own reproductive health choices and I am officially in love. <3<3<3

carl agatha, Monday, 27 February 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

Thats awesome!

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 27 February 2012 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

Between this and the really fantastic panel with J@n S. and M1k3 Q. that I attended on Friday, I am 3/4 satisfied with my state and federal representatives.

carl agatha, Monday, 27 February 2012 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

I should clarify, it was a rally in support of birth control on Friday (;_; that such a thing even needs to exist) and Jan and Mike spoke and they were both fantastic. I was always a Jan Fan, but MQ really, fundamentally gets it in a way that is rare among politicians IME.

carl agatha, Monday, 27 February 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

J@n S. is the bomb.

Fonz Hour (Eazy), Monday, 27 February 2012 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

God I know.

The one thing that was strangely heartening is that with all this trans-vaginal ultrasound nonsense, I got to see congresspeople saying the word "vagina" during a panel discussion that was being recorded by the press. That feels like a sort of progress amongst all the nonsense.

did u eat the pizza jordan?

i had a fun little trip. the college kids in minnesota were just ADORABLE. there was a lindy hop going on in the same student center where we played and everyone was dressed up in their fake flapper clothes and swing-dancing (and also some half-hearted line dancing).

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 27 February 2012 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

we ate the pizza for dinner last night with a pesto yogurt dipping sauce, and it was delicious.

how was lazy janes?

40oz of tears (Jordan), Monday, 27 February 2012 21:20 (fourteen years ago)

lazy jane's was great, best food of the trip (though there wasn't much competition - we ate at "the best pizza place in northfield MN" and it was pretty awful, in addition to a perkins). it was disconcerting whenever the cook would bellow out names of people to pick up their orders but everything else about it was delightful.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 27 February 2012 21:21 (fourteen years ago)

yeah that's kind of their thing. it's an east side treasure though. i love that they opened that bakery annex next door so that you don't have to wait in line to get scones.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Monday, 27 February 2012 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

nuthin happening in chicago
