'90s HOT: A picture thread.

This thread really is making me question how much my sexual "ideal" really was shaped by the media images of my adolescence. I mean, like, duh, but also, wow.

all these images do look 90's, but i really can't point to something specific about them that dates them. i mean, some of them could pass as 80's or the 00's. what makes them look 90's?

I think two things you can definitely point to (there are loads more!) is that noses are bigger, and hair less blonde, than in either 00s or 80s hot? With the noses the it's probably just surgery but the hair I think is the story of alt going mainstream?

There's a "turn of phrase" gifted/plot challenged author who's star/publishing has fallen to disappointing lows after Tooth Imprints on a Corn Dog (1996). The 90s look may also be technologically driven, just in terms of the images - - like, all the magazine covers are still shot on film (I think) and there's somewhat less digital fiddling with color balance and stuff. Obviously that was all in play but (I think) not anywhere to the degree as in the 00s. To further elaborate my crackpot theory: I wonder how much of the look-and-feel is also just that most of these images are print shots from magazines scanned to GIF or JPEG in the 90s, as opposed to being digital from the get-go. There's a certain grain that just makes scrolling through this thread feel retro even if you aren't looking at all the dreamy folk.

Did Tori Amos get work done, or is she just, you know, 25 years older? I honestly can't tell. I mean, there a compare/contrast with Sinead would evince much the same WTF-ness; I've shown pictures of Sinead to friends who refuse to believe it is her.

Here she is in full makeup for a photoshoot (rather than the candid used for comparison upthread). She just looks like an older version of her younger self imo. (She is 49, after all.)

Tanya Donelly always reminded me of one of my friends a little bit, so every time I'd see her in a Muses/Breeders/Belly video I just thought of my friend instead.

tori did a bunch of talking head segments for vh1's recent 'greatest women in music' thing and her face looked all creepily stiff and botox'd up on video

iirc tori did have surgery to correct a bone deformity in her jaw at one point -- pretty certain she had some a few plastic surgeries after that, too

Well, I could be totally wrong re: Tori. Maybe she's gone under the knife. I just think she had some pretty unique features/proportions to begin with, so it's hard to gauge how she'd look a couple decades down the road.

There should be nothing shameful about crushing on her, but when I remember the way I went about it at the time I'm not so sure.

Always preferred Hersh to Donelly (in every way), but doulas are pretty much deities.
