I was in Dublin on Saturday and got chatting briefly to an old bloke in a pub - he claimed to know nothing about football, yet McClean was the second thing he talked about (property market was first)

I mean it's clearly bollocks, even AVB isn't deluded enough to believe that shipping out top scorer Sturridge in favour of Theo Walcott is the way to rejoin Europe's elite.

sturridge, mata, romeu, ramires are the 4 players I'm pretty sure AVB actually wants. Meireles, Luiz, Cahill will stick around. After that I'm not too sure.

Doubt he's that crazy about Luiz but who would buy him given the amount Chelsea forked out? Suspect that ABV publically calling for the owner to voice his support is some 'lady if you have to ask' shit.

You see I'd say that on current form alone Ashley Cole deserved to be dropped, the trouble is that the only alternative is Boss Winger playing out of position, which is an indictment of the squad tbh.

is this just a fairly typical team in transition thing (ie. wtf are people expecting, give avb time etc), or do 'the old guard' not trust him and are they really that much of a problem? the old guard being terry, lampard, cole, who else?

Perfect storm of impossible factors - capricious and possibly interfering owner, massive failed transfers, over-mighty and ageing playing staff who don't seem to accept they're past their best, lack of sufficient quality replacements, years of poor recruitment policies coming home to roost - that he's not really making the best of. But I'm not sure anyone could make a decent fist of managing Chelsea right now, would be interesting to see what he can do with an entire summer's worth of transfers under his belt, but there seems to be a mutual collapse of trust.

i thought the friction between manager and senior players was precisely because Abramovich had brought in a manager to usher out the old guard.

I assumed that was kind of AVB's remit.

It was a neat touch of Roman's that the manager looks younger than a lot of his player

Lampard, Terry, Drogba, Cech is the old guard, which I think means senior players with the nerve to fuck things up for avb/Scolari/whoever. Cole is less of a strong personality I think.
