Actually that is a good idea yeah

Skipping 769 messages at this point... Click here if you want to load them all.
Um, how about an additional ".. or click here for the last 100 messages"

how about 'click here for the last 100 messages not counting ones that just say ^^^^^^.'
― estela, Sunday, 19 February 2012 01:37 (fourteen years ago)
More than one bookmark to a thread, like you can do with a book. Sometimes I want to keep my place, sometimes I want to mark a post to go back to.
― knocked over like the last act in Mackbeth (onimo), Sunday, 19 February 2012 02:31 (fourteen years ago)
I think the current implementation for handling long threads works just fine - i.e first 50 or so posts, the big red box with "skipping 769 messages" in the middle, and the last 50 or so after it, with the option to get the whole thread both at the top and on the skip bar. If the post I'm looking for isn't already displayed, I'm probably not going to know if it's in the last 100 or the 100 before that, so I'd want to load the whole thread anyway.
― Lee626, Sunday, 19 February 2012 02:37 (fourteen years ago)
Well on that note, a tagging system of some kind could be handy. Or bringing back the categories, at least. xpost
― Lindsay NAGL (Trayce), Sunday, 19 February 2012 02:38 (fourteen years ago)
a tagging syste of some kind = bookmarks?
― flopson, Sunday, 19 February 2012 02:46 (fourteen years ago)
No I mean tags like word/subject tags.
― Lindsay NAGL (Trayce), Sunday, 19 February 2012 02:51 (fourteen years ago)
unless I completely misunderstand how bookmarks work (i've nevr used them)
― Lindsay NAGL (Trayce), Sunday, 19 February 2012 02:52 (fourteen years ago)
no, that's not how they work
― flopson, Sunday, 19 February 2012 02:57 (fourteen years ago)
maybe i don't mean multiple bookmarks, but something like starring in gmail so i can easily view those posts later
― knocked over like the last act in Mackbeth (onimo), Sunday, 19 February 2012 03:00 (fourteen years ago)
I'd like to like comments.
― Jeff, Sunday, 19 February 2012 03:01 (fourteen years ago)
Cosign on the load last 100 messages idea. Some threads get restarted and I'll see xxx thread has 122 new answers, would love to go to the start of the revive in that case without loading a whole thread.

Display messages _____ to _____

Option to always display everything. Especially on mobile.
― Jeff, Sunday, 19 February 2012 17:06 (fourteen years ago)
could "show images" be on-page rather than or, in addition to, being in preferences? i shift between the two very regularly either image or youtube-heavy threads. maybe others do, too?
I like this idea. I've wished for something like this when I accidentally clicked the rip nsfws thread at work.
― garbage corn fan (Je55e), Sunday, 19 February 2012 17:44 (fourteen years ago)
that would be very useful
― bnw, Sunday, 19 February 2012 17:45 (fourteen years ago)
imo that would solve the "load back 100 pages" problem, as well: there's virtually no wait time on even the longest threads with images off (especially on the new server)
― flopson, Sunday, 19 February 2012 17:52 (fourteen years ago)
no but you still have to track down where the 50th most recent message is and work backwards from there
― ploppawheelie V (k3vin k.), Sunday, 19 February 2012 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

it would be very cool if there were a box, somewhere near the "submit post" button, that i could check that said something to the effect of "update bookmark" or something - the issue is that there are times where for whatever reason i haven't read all the most recent posts in a fast-moving thread, but i want to make a quick comment or respond to a particularly recent post - it is currently impossible to do this without losing my bookmark some x posts upthread, since posting in a thread which i've bookmarked automatically moves the bookmark to my post. i want there to be a way to make a post without losing my place, so i think there should be a box (and 'checked' should be the default) that gives me the option to keep my bookmark in its place and still post a message
― the route is ban (k3vin k.), Sunday, 3 June 2012 05:12 (fourteen years ago)
There's a workaround for that, no? I.e. load your bookmarked thread, open the bookmarked post's permalink in a new window/tab, make yer post, then go to new window/tab and re-bookmark.
― Captain Jean-Luc Godard (Leee), Sunday, 3 June 2012 05:17 (fourteen years ago)
I SUPPOSE
― the route is ban (k3vin k.), Sunday, 3 June 2012 05:19 (fourteen years ago)
Personally, I don't think people should be able to post if they've not read the whole thread over. That just leads to same things being repeated again and again.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 06:39 (fourteen years ago)
i agree with the t-man
― way instain eyes (electricsound), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 06:48 (fourteen years ago)
i think there should be a "like" feature attached to posts, but the results of its use would not be viewable anywhere. instead, at the end of every year, a collection would be taken up for the person who had received the most likes (without revealing their name), and the money so gathered would be used to buy and send them a shitload of candy.
― spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 07:20 (fourteen years ago)
I think a like feature would be great. But not hidden. And it could be OTM instead of like.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 11:23 (fourteen years ago)
However I could see an outcry because of the fackbookication of ilx. Damn you naysayers.

what about a function whereby users can 'flag' a post that they enjoy
― that's not kewell (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 11:27 (fourteen years ago)
I'd like to see an option to hide the 'Flag Post' link. I've clicked on it several times by accident, especially when surfing on my mobile. If nothing else if I were to flag a post, which I haven't done so far, then it would give me a bit of breathing space before doing so.
― fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 11:31 (fourteen years ago)
just want to say that i don't think people should be able to post until they've read an entire thread - this would help avoid repetition

And made its colour white.
― Keith, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 23:52 (fourteen years ago)
I really think there should be some functionality that prevents people from posting until they've read an entire thread. Perhaps aided by the combination of some sort of camera that scans eye movements and an end-of-thread quiz which, upon its successful completion, will provide posters with the Captcha code which will allow them to post to the thread.
But I mostly want to stress that people should be reading entire threads before posting in order to cut down on repetition.
― Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 23:55 (fourteen years ago)
you know how things are funny when repeated a few times, and then dreadfully unfunny for a long while before ultimately reaching a sublime state beyond such concerns? (eg markers and 'i miss you')
there should be a way to hide the middle part
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 23:59 (fourteen years ago)
But I think if you look somewhere around post #1000 this has been discussed at length already
― frogbs, Wednesday, June 20, 2012 9:24 AM (3 minutes ago)
hmmm...actually numbering posts could be really handy! The easiest-to-follow comment sections out there are the ones with numbered comments. I don't know what it would do to the nature of the ongoing ILX cocktail party if threads had a bunch of "@23" or "re: 497" stuff, though.
― Biff Wellington (WmC), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 14:33 (fourteen years ago)
A link to a quoted post could be nice. It could tie in with my idea of links (buttons?) for quoting and formatting like we have on Zing. My right pinky sucks at typing brackets and stupid Chrome doesn't have a BBCode extension.
― Je55e, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 15:53 (fourteen years ago)
on firefox, maybe others, you can just drag the "Permalink" link to the "Add A Post" box

― rob, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 21:36 (fourteen years ago)
Not sure if this idea has been posted yet, but on the search results screen, it would be cool if it also listed the total number of answers for each thread. it could come in handy when a specific topic (e.g., james brown) has many threads and you're wondering which one is the "main" thread.
