not to be all superficial but
I didn't think it was something that I needed to ask permission to do!

jesse honestly? even after i said "please do not take pictures of me" out loud while we were standing by the bar? i'm not mad, but yes, in general i would prefer to be asked if a picture of me is being posted in a public place. i am a control freak! get used to it.

:)
My twitter feed is making me feel broken because I don't like Adele.
― carl agatha, Monday, 13 February 2012 16:59 (twelve years ago) link
haha. i have no feelings about her beyond thinking "rolling in the deep" is a good song, but she was kind of adorable last night.
― horseshoe, Monday, 13 February 2012 17:01 (twelve years ago) link
I just looked at some pictures of her and she looked super pretty. And I think she has a good voice. I'm just bored by all of her songs that I've heard.
― carl agatha, Monday, 13 February 2012 17:04 (twelve years ago) link
when she won the album of the year grammy she started crying and then laughed while she was doing her thank yous and said she had "a bit of snot" or had gotten a bit of snot on the grammy or something and i think everyone i was watching with was pretty charmed.
― horseshoe, Monday, 13 February 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago) link
i also very much admired her eye makeup and spent a lot of time thinking about how one would achieve that effect.
― horseshoe, Monday, 13 February 2012 17:08 (twelve years ago) link
i don't really get why people watch the grammys or really any award shows. the oscars kind of make sense because some people seem to care on some level who wins oscars but no one really cares who wins grammys or golden globes or whatever.
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 13 February 2012 17:08 (twelve years ago) link
the grammys are terrible and i have no idea why i watch them :/
― horseshoe, Monday, 13 February 2012 17:09 (twelve years ago) link
watching the oscars is one of my favorite things, though. i think you have to be obsessed with celebrities and an inveterate gossip.
or just know a lot of things about the oscars, like john

In my defense, I was encouraged/instructed by one of our friends to go to the front of the room and take lots of pictures, which overrode your previous protest, which I didn't realize was a directive.
xps
― garbage corn fan (Je55e), Monday, 13 February 2012 17:10 (twelve years ago) link
i think i get caught up in the idea of awards as being perceived as valuable or actually meaning something and forget that most people just watch the award shows because of the spectacle and entertainment value and don't really care that much about who actually wins.
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 13 February 2012 17:12 (twelve years ago) link
Aw, totally charming. I was looking at her eye makeup, too!
You know who else's eye makeup I am totally obsessed with? Lady Crawley (Elizabeth McGovern) on Downton Abbey. She's working some little black eyeliner wings.
It's seems as understandable why someone would care about who wins the Grammys as who wins an Oscar. Which is to say, to me "not understandable at all" because I p much only care about red carpet pics but one doesn't seem more understandable than the other.

i think with the grammys i end up getting a little enraged by the vision of popular music presented by the show and how off it seems? i think i am skeeved out by the music industry more than the movie industry (irrationally). maybe i just care about music more.
― horseshoe, Monday, 13 February 2012 17:16 (twelve years ago) link
but i guess i watch it because i'm obsessed with celebrities and an inveterate gossip.

i haven't started watching downton abbey yet, Jenny. i get such mixed reviews but mostly i know i would become addicted and watch 5 episodes a night.
As soon as I got to work this morning, two older female co-workers barraged me with overwhelming praise for the Grammys. Apparently, it was the best award show ever. Except they seemed a little befuddled by nikki minaj.
― the glass of beer (askance johnson), Monday, 13 February 2012 17:19 (twelve years ago) link
nicki minaj was definitely the high point just in terms of wtf is going on right now
― horseshoe, Monday, 13 February 2012 17:20 (twelve years ago) link
Revised plans for my day off:
Sit on couch with cats and read. Roast cauliflower for lunch. Practice black eyeliner wings.
xp haha I'm befuddled by Nicki Minaj, tbh

this otm, it's all just a weird alternate music dimension where bon iver is the best new music of 2012 even though in our dimension his first album came out like four years ago
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 13 February 2012 17:22 (twelve years ago) link
I mean she befuddles me and I did not watch the Grammys.
I was listening to her album on the train and the song where Eminen (I assume? I didn't look but it sounded like him) raps about killing all the women in the world came on and my mouth got very prim and I turned it off and felt very old.
― carl agatha, Monday, 13 February 2012 17:24 (twelve years ago) link
I gave up hope of the grammy being "relevant" or "making sense" at some point in the mid-90s. I have still vaguely enjoyed watching some of them in the past few years though. It can be good Sunday night fare, while you are trying to forget how much you are dreading going back to work.
― the glass of beer (askance johnson), Monday, 13 February 2012 17:25 (twelve years ago) link
she makes me feel old, too. the grammy performance was very madonna circa like a prayer except with added weirdo minaj facial expressions.
xp

the grammys are terrible but i think it's actually meaningful that a new orleans brass band won one this year

I'm honestly not trying to come off as ignorant-of-pop-culture-cool but I don't even know who Adele is.
I say this as someone who purposefully introduced a couple of serious shit-pop fans to Kreayshawn recently.

also she said, "the inspiration for this album was something we've all experienced...a rubbish relationship" and everyone laughed
― horseshoe, Monday, 13 February 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago) link
I was trying to articulate why I don't care for her music but I just sound like me ~ 1992 (it's too produced, it's too polished, it's too cliche, it's all formula) and I get annoyed with myself, esp. since some of my favorite songs are genetically engineered in labs to be Super Pop Hits.
― carl agatha, Monday, 13 February 2012 17:45 (twelve years ago) link
Not nearly as bad as this stinker from 1990 though, not by a LONGSHOT.

i was talking with sarah the other week about how it's weird how people describe certain songs as "unescapable" (like rollin in the deep) and i have almost never heard them. i didn't hear RITD until curiosity led me to pull it up on youtube. basically because i never listen to radio or watch music television.
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 13 February 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago) link
I hear a lot of stuff off my random spotify playlists.

not being snooty, just don't have a car stereo or drive much anymore and that was how i used to hear popular music.
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 13 February 2012 17:49 (twelve years ago) link
Her music is not my thing, but Adele herself seems charming and appealing as a person.I listen to the radio kind of a lot in the car. I love singing to pop hits in the car! No one can hear me.

rollin in the deep is great, but the other stuff i've heard is pretty boring even though it has the best drummer in the world (chris dave).
― the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Monday, 13 February 2012 17:59 (twelve years ago) link
Ohhhhhh hey, Alannah Myles. Maybe that's part of the problem for me. Adele's particular brand of pop reminds me of pop songs I hated in the past.
I normally don't put this much thought into why I don't like something but seriously, outside of you all (which maybe I should have come to you with this first) it seems like everybody I know loves this woman's music.
Fun fact: I won that Alannah Myles tape from a radio station when I was in high school. It was the least offensive thing on offer in their "prize closet" (not a euphemism).
― carl agatha, Monday, 13 February 2012 18:02 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, I don't care who wins the Grammys, but it was fun to watch the over-the-top and/or batshit performances -- which, let's be honest, constitutes most of the ceremony -- and acceptance speeches. (Bon Iver's speech basically carried the subtext that the Grammys are kind of bullshit.)
― jaymc, Monday, 13 February 2012 18:13 (twelve years ago) link
This was basically Bon Iver's point, if I understood him correctly.
