we are all jealous of nude spock and his lovely companion gentrificatrix.

poor girlfriend then has to come home only to be berated about her teeth, after being assaulted multiple times by racists on the subway. ;_;

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

My take on it is this:

Dude is doing his act, and starts getting heckled by a black man. He tries to ignore it, but the guy's persistent, gets to him. Maybe the guy calls him "cracker", and references their respective races in his heckles; maybe he doesn't.

For whatever reason -- too much alcohol, too much coke, mental illness, a bad day, bad judgment, or yes, crypto-racism -- this trips a circuit in Richards's head. He thinks to himself, This guy is fucking with me, going after me no-holds-barred, and he's doing it because he thinks I'm afraid to fire back the same way, because he's black. He can call me whatever he wants, but I have to hold back, I'm supposed to tiptoe. Well, take this, buddy.

And so he calls him a "nigger", makes a left-field reference to lynching him, because he wants that moment when the guy's mouth drops open. He doesn't think about consequences, he just wants to let loose, wants to drop the A-bomb (or, well, the N-bomb). And maybe he realizes what he's done, but he can't backpedal, he has to go with it, try to work it into something that'll tie it together. But he can't, everything he does just makes it worse.

I may be totally wrong on this, but I think it comes from the same place as Elvis Costello's infamous "blind ignorant nigger" comment -- in that I don't think the real driving force is any uncommon degree of racism in this particular person, but rather the desire to say The Thing You're Not Supposed to Say. It's the impulse that makes people in relationships go after their partner's jugular. To drop the bomb, to say "Fuck you, I'm going to deliberately escalate this past the point where either of us can control it."

This doesn't mean it isn't completely fucked-up; this doesn't mean that Richards isn't a racist. But I think the "OMG he's saying what he really thinks" argument is simplistic -- or at least I don't think it's the only explanation for the abhorrent events we saw on tape.

xpost t looks pretty clear kramer was going for some edgy lenny bruce thing and failing horribly yeah OTM

"The question is you have an actor who is trying to be a comedian who doesn't know what to do when an audience is disruptive," Lopez said. "He's an actor whose show has been off the air, he shouldn't ever be on a stand-up gig.

Another King of the Hill connection! He's right, though.

It's true!

'what's racist about racism'

Racism is racist, but racism doesn't make someone a racist.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

If your girlfriend exists, maybe you should consider that she is a tool?

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

bobby,

i'm no big expert on race relations, but you seem like you're sort of a shithead.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

lurker #2421's post is the most OTM thing on this thread so far.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

If she is a tool, maybe you should consider that you are sub-tool?

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

i'm no big expert on race relations, but you seem like you're sort of a shithead

But, how can that be? I gave you Page's "Lucifer Rising".

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

guys, there's no girlfriend, come on

Yea, it is. And he is agreeing with me and stet.

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

I give +10 bonus points for still using Harlem as a boogie man spector town. I lived way up north there myself, never really ever had a problem. So I'm gonna have to go with tool for yr shorty, dude. A) terrible hygiene B) dates you C) gets harassed by random strangers constantly for being shit. Have some self-respect and dump her already.

xpost geoff we know, it's just funnier this way.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

xpost That's fine. I agree with a lot of what Stet has said. I've been ignoring most of your posts, NS.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

pathetic argumentation. I might as well go somewhere else now.

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

no please dont go!!

anticon jemima (ooo), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

Please do, I suggest here.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

Ally, you should remember I hold my own opinions. Attempts at psychic teardown are pointless coming from someone I don't respect.

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, I've already been there!

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

so you respect them black folx calling you cracker???

I'm not trying to "psychic teardown," I'm laughing my ass off at the suggestion that what you just described about your Real Dollgirlfriend happens on any kind of regular basis at all. But keep New Jack Citying up the thread. I don't get why you continue to post here, to be honest, what with your important job and devoted, persecuted, smelly girlfriend and all that.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

I've never been called a cracker as far as I can remember.

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

Christ, it's bad enough blount tying me in with nude spock. I don't know what yr argument is bobby, but it doesn't seem like mine. I'm not defending him, and I'm not saying he can't be a racist twat.

FWIW, It increasingly seems like it is -- and for the record I think the behaviour was outrageous and uncalled-for, whatever his motivations or point he was trying to make. If he was trying to be funny, I've got no time for him at all.

Lurker saying what I wanted to say without being a prick about it.

stet (stet), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

The bus she takes is always packed. It happens more often than makes me comfortable.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Jerry Seinfeld says he's "sick over this."

He's reacting to the on-stage comments from former "Seinfeld" co-star Michael Richards over the weekend at a Los Angeles comedy club.

Richards, responding to heckling from two black members of the audience, unleashed a string of racial epithets, taunting the two men with slurs and profanities. Some people in the audience walked out, as Richards repeatedly used the N-word.

Today, Seinfeld issued a statement saying, "I'm sure Michael is also sick over this horrible, horrible mistake." Seinfeld says the comments from Richards were "so extremely offensive." He adds, "I feel terrible for all the people who have been hurt."

As for Richards, best known as Seinfeld neighbor Kramer, he wouldn't comment on camera when reached by C-N-N, but the network reports that he said off-camera that he felt sorry for what happened, and that he had made amends.

I've never been called a cracker as far as I can remember.

i've been called a cracker! there used to be (maybe still is?) an open air drug market at iowa and austin on chicago's wild wild west side. i used to walk home 2 blocks north and one night i was told "if you're not buying, just keep walkin' cracker".

it totally made my night.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know what yr argument is bobby, but it doesn't seem like mine. I'm not defending him, and I'm not saying he can't be a racist twat.

Don't worry, that's all I'm saying. But, as several ILXors have noted recently, people love to jump all over me. So, if they can associate you with me in their minds, that's even better for their argument against you.

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

Happening once should be "more than makes [you] comfortable," so that doesn't really prove any kind of greater point, does it?

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

Happening once? Disingenuous or sheltered, I'm not sure which.

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

UH did you bother to read what I actually wrote? I mean, I already know the answer to that, so I'm not entirely sure what you're asking. Like I said, I lived up there as have several ILXors and I don't recall any one I know having trouble at all. It happening at all is more than anyone should be comfortable with, so stating it has happened more than you'd like it to is pretty worthless.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

you know who could have sold kramer's ill-fated stab at shock-humor:

Jerry: "You didn't know smoking is bad for you?!" [it caused his face to look like a 'catchers mit']
Kramer: "Well... emfysima, birth defects, cancer yeah... but not this!"

Gerard (Gerard), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

i've been called a cracker, too. a "dead cracker" no less. and in des moines! but still my teeth are in pretty good shape. i'm a survivor

geoff (gcannon), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

"OH MY GOD THERE IS A NEGRO HECKLING ME SOMEONE CALL THE LAPD"

people would have been rolling in the aisles. gilbert should teach a class.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Did Gilbert say that? He is hilarious.

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

no, he didn't say that. just saying some people can get away with stuff cuz they are funny.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

i do think that kramer is a gifted physical comedian though.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

It happening at all is more than anyone should be comfortable with, so stating it has happened more than you'd like it to is pretty worthless.

Yeah, that's what I was saying. The first few times she told me about this sort of shit, I thought, "Oh, that's not too bad. I'm pretty comfortable with that." But, then, you see, after several times, I said, "Now hey wait a minute. This is starting to make me feel uncomfortable here!" Dummy.

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

wtf is it with tmz getting all the racist (sorry if the use of that term offends any crackers) outbursts?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, that was totally what I said, Carrot Top.

Allyzay Eisenschefter (allyzay), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

Say, that's the line I just used on you. Good comeback.

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

irrelevant

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 20 November 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

blount, you watch the Michigan-OSU game?
