But still.

It's not as blind and white as it first seemed.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 12 February 2012 12:05 (fourteen years ago)

xxxp, From a business perspective, if you finish 6th one year, invest £100m, or whatever, on reshaping the squad and finish 7th the next, you're not going to be happy. The position isn't as important as the fact that they look as far away as ever from challenging. I don't know any Liverpool fans who think they've invested wisely or that they're set up to significantly improve with the players they have over the next two years.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Sunday, 12 February 2012 12:08 (fourteen years ago)

Liverpool challenging for fourth isn't a ridiculous prospect at all, look at the state of Chelsea and Arsenal over the course of this season. They're pretty resilient, but Dalglish's problem has been the inability to turn Liverpool into a creative or threatening side - a handful more goals would see them in fourth. Part of the problem is they're over-reliant on Suarez for creativity, especially when Bellamy isn't playing.

Matt DC, Sunday, 12 February 2012 12:17 (fourteen years ago)

£100 million, really! I call bullshit. At the start of the season did anyone expect Chelsea and Arsenal to be so poor?

pandemic, Sunday, 12 February 2012 12:20 (fourteen years ago)

Also I was unaware that the season had ended.

pandemic, Sunday, 12 February 2012 12:23 (fourteen years ago)

Arguably Arsenal are overperforming. I had them down for 7th, but behind Everton not Newcastle.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 12 February 2012 12:24 (fourteen years ago)

xps The £115m spent obviously includes the previous January transfer window but it's part of the same project under the new ownership. They took over a side that was probably the sixth best in the league and now have one that's probably still sixth best in the league.

I wouldn't bet against them finishing 4th. That would represent success - not winning two cups.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Sunday, 12 February 2012 12:32 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know any Liverpool fans who think they've invested wisely or that they're set up to significantly improve with the players they have over the next two years.

i'm a pessimist but "over the next two years"... might as well say i reckon i've a poor chance of winning any coin tosses that emerge to decide minor decisions amongst friends from from now till 2023.

and of course winning cups would be a success.

I don't know if it's residual and naive nostalgia for the pre-Premiership era coupled with Liverpool's underdog status during said era, but I've always thought of Liverpool as kind of good guys of modern football.

love this, if an lfc fan said this on ile they'd have a letter sent to their house with "sense of entitlement" written in semen on it.

as for kenny, he's just overdoing "siege mentality", ferguson is actually personally on the record with vile homophobic shit and if you google it there's barely a criticism but it's in enough places to know it happened.

I'm going to allow this! (LocalGarda), Sunday, 12 February 2012 12:35 (fourteen years ago)

I must just zone out when Shearer et al are talking - I didn't even notice that Evra sneakily dropping his hand as Suarez arrived was a thing 'til I rewatched motd just now.
except the video from behind suarez which i posted upthread shows evra raising his hand to suarez's. can this theory just die already?

gyac, Sunday, 12 February 2012 12:36 (fourteen years ago)

haven't watched the handshake vid again - somehow life gets in the way of the important stuff.

I'm going to allow this! (LocalGarda), Sunday, 12 February 2012 12:41 (fourteen years ago)

I've just rechecked the predictions thread, and nearly everyone had Chelsea first or second. A handful of brave souls went for third.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 12 February 2012 12:44 (fourteen years ago)

The vile red-nosed old Scottish drunk had some choice words about snood wearers, didn't he?

James Mitchell, Sunday, 12 February 2012 12:48 (fourteen years ago)

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2011/0528/1224297950159.html

As far back as 1997 he signalled a growing animosity towards those who cover the game. “There are some excellent journalists, honest journalists, and respected journalists,” he observed, “but the media has become a monster. They know all the answers, right and wrong. They want exclusive stories and confidential background. They want their cards marked. They want gossip. And, believe me, if they don’t get it, you’re in trouble.”

He may have had something of a point then but five years later when somebody asked at the end of United’s season something as innocuous as whether he would be attending the World Cup in Japan and South Korea that summer, he replied, far more outrageously: “None of your business! Do I still ask you if you’re still going to those fucking gay clubs?”

not sure what Fergie's cuntishness has to do with the issue in hand but do carry on

Number None, Sunday, 12 February 2012 13:01 (fourteen years ago)

Exactly. He might be a hypocrite and a homophobe but it doesn't mean he's wrong.

for a guy who's all 'fuckin ilx fuckin this shit's not important fuckin media gossip fuckin who cares let's get on with the stuff that relates only to the ball' i gotta say, ronan - tryin to make evra/dalglish's current & ongoingbehaviour - which is in directlyconnected to, if not directly responsible for, much of the media frenzy nor the fan/messageboard frenzy that, again, you bemoan so much-somehow equal to one ferguson quote from i don't know when is NAGL.

I mean i know i'm just another lfc hater but

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 12 February 2012 13:18 (fourteen years ago)

fuckin phone, sorry for garble

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 12 February 2012 13:19 (fourteen years ago)

if people are going to slate dalglish then i think the fact it's a quote from "i don't know when" says a lot, obviously didn't cause a ripple and is worse than anything dalglish has done/said. doesn't exonerate dalglish but it does give some perspective on one of the most outspoken voices of the weekend, fergie.

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Sunday, 12 February 2012 13:44 (fourteen years ago)

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Sunday, 12 February 2012 13:51 (fourteen years ago)

... like it's the Royal Engineers vs. Corinthian in 1892 or sumthin'

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Sunday, 12 February 2012 13:54 (fourteen years ago)

Suárez did shake the hands of (at least) 2 alleged adulterers and an alleged shoplifter and tried to shake the hand of a proven drugs cheat, who then refused to shake his hand! What principles the drugs cheat has.

john terje (cozen), Sunday, 12 February 2012 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, it's a rule for me never to shake the hand of an adulterer too

Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Sunday, 12 February 2012 13:57 (fourteen years ago)

Had forgotten the Wolves game was on as NV has not been on the thread complaining about McCarthy.

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 12 February 2012 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

So Suarez has apologised then

Number None, Sunday, 12 February 2012 14:26 (fourteen years ago)

Well, Liverpool have released an apology 'from him'.

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 12 February 2012 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, but at least it's something. Makes the conspiracy theorists look even more idiotic

Number None, Sunday, 12 February 2012 14:35 (fourteen years ago)

Refusing to shake hands is a mark of respect in Uruguay

Sh3rry and the Bloodworks \m/ (onimo), Sunday, 12 February 2012 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

This "well he may be a racist but look at the bad shit these other guys did" is inane.

Rampant homophobia at every level of the game is a serious issue (my guess is that if you polled every Premiership manager and got them to speak with absolute honesty you'd get more homophobes than not) but a lame rhetorical device to some how level the playing field with Suarez. Face it, they're all cunts, so unfair to pick on Suarez etc etc.

Matt DC, Sunday, 12 February 2012 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

Assuming the released apology isn't actually "from" Suarez's massive repentent heart, then surely it's an indication of a significant fissure in management-player solidarity? It's publicly saying he better act in good grace -- as set out by this apology -- at all future times, or it will be an act of war against his own club

^^^possibly v naive of me here
