Ugh totally. I really love Schaal but this character is not funny. Also, its weird that for like two episodes she plays a normal person surrounded by crazy people and then suddenly in third act of this episode - boom - she is actually just a crazy person herself. Very poor character development.

Did anyone notice who wrote this week's episode? Because that was a total return to form. I renounce my Doubting Thomas-hood.

It made me a little bit sad because Alec Baldwin would have been a fantastic Batman back in the day.

I actually thought it was a sub-par. I laughed a few times, as ever, so it wasn't bad.

did you notice upthread all the people explaining that who happens to have the writing credit on a given episode of a sitcom is essentially meaningless as far as the overall quality or funniness?

some dude, I'm very familiar with the generally collaborative nature of television writing. I think it's a fair assumption, though, that the credited writer of a given episode provides at least the bare bones structure of that episode. And that the extent of the collaboration varies from episode to episode. I'm pretty sure, for example, that some episodes of Community had relatively untouched single-author scripts. I don't feel like it's too far out of the realm of possibility that something like that has happened on 30 Rock once or twice. This episode was very well-constructed, and i think that went a long way towards informing the success of the episode. So I (and the credited writer, most likely) would take exception to your assertion.

Are Josh Siegal and Dylan Morgan important to point out in any way? They wrote the episode but neither have wikipedia pages.

Probably not, a hoy hoy, as 30 Rock scripts are assembled by a quorum of "writers" (psychic adepts) from the raw atoms of joeks. One (or two) must bear the great existential weight of being briefly separated from the cloudmind and assigning their "name" to these scripts, for the ancient Code of the WGA tells us it must be so.

Except...it's pretty well-established that Aaron Sorkin did, in fact, write a lot of the his shows' scripts all by himself. I don't know why this is such a difficult thing to accept.

Look. I openly acknowledge that 30 Rock probably has one of the more collaborative writers' rooms. I just think it's a little off to be completely dismissive towards the credited writer(s) of a given episode, as if they didn't have a sizeable role in the finished product.

Also its a fact that way over in Britishers-land an often used format is to have a round-robin of single script writers who write a handful of episodes ALL BY THEMSELVES and then a single script editor to review and make revisions.

But this is American comedy were talking about -- certainly 15 people or more are needed to generate the laugh-per-minute ratio US audiences demand.

i'm just confused as to why a big deal was made of two dudes i'd never heard of before. i was expecting someone to say 'lol they wrote for [classic sitcom x] and [classic sitcom y] as well as writing [classic comedy movie z] didnt ya know you rube' but no it just ended in the same inane conversation about things we dont really know about

i think we do know fairly well that american comedy writing, unlike british, is done in a writers room and is a collaborative process between a number of people. whereas in britain single writers or a writing partnership of two people is the more common thing.

otoh yes the person who wrote the storyline should be given some amount of responsibility for how funny the show is, since there are inherently good or shitty plots.

i really disliked her initially on that stupid new zealand tenacious d thing, and on her comedy central special. but then she's so hilarious on the daily show and bob's burgers that i'm totally turned around on her, thought she's been a welcome presence on 30 rock.
