The way Sansa treats Arya in the first book borders on horrible, right up to the point when all of the actually horrible people step up and say "no see, this is how it's actually done". It's more a recalibration of scale and expectations than Sansa really "deserving" any of the things that happen to her.

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Friday, 10 February 2012 21:07 (fourteen years ago)

Sansa is horrible to Arya the way sisters are horrible to each other. She starts off as less sympathetic than her sister, sure. But Arya turns into kind of a weird psycho and she doesn't (nb, I really like Arya).

no spoilers!!!

I mean I know that's vague and all but let's just be careful.

encarta it (Gukbe), Saturday, 11 February 2012 06:27 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, sorry.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Saturday, 11 February 2012 06:28 (fourteen years ago)

I've only seen the first season, and I've never read the books, but my take on Sansa was that she was totally into the 'being a princess' idea and all her shittiness came from there. I felt much more sympathy after Ned died.

But Sansa is really great because it provided one of my favourite moments, which was her saying she didn't want Joffrey to be noble and great and worthy and the subsequent look and smile Ned and Arya gave each other.

encarta it (Gukbe), Saturday, 11 February 2012 06:38 (fourteen years ago)

i think people find sansa dislikeable because she is written as oblivious and stupid to a remarkable degree

really all the kids are written as already being little adults or have arcs where they mature in completely random, arbitrary ways. actually there's one big exception to that, and he's the one who doesn't get to be pov, which makes an unfortunate kind of sense.

desperado, rough rider (thomp), Saturday, 11 February 2012 12:34 (fourteen years ago)

she is her father's daughter - naive and way too trusting.

gyac, Saturday, 11 February 2012 13:04 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think ned is trusting so much as he goes 'ah, x is untrustworthy' and is incapable of the necessary mental work to be able to work out what that means he have to do and how x is going to attempt to stab him in the back down the line -- this makes him one of the more interesting characters i think

desperado, rough rider (thomp), Saturday, 11 February 2012 13:06 (fourteen years ago)

hmmm maybe; he's not exactly like "oh i will trust this blatantly untrustworthy person" so much that he realises this, has no way of coping with ~intrigues and ~plotting, and has to rely on the only people who have talked to him about his worries/fears ie littlefinger etc.

his conversation with cersei where he reveals he knows her kids are Jaime's is this blinding example of it; not trust, but what did he think was going to happen?!

gyac, Saturday, 11 February 2012 13:12 (fourteen years ago)

but what did he think was going to happen

That they would leave Westeros!!

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 06:27 (fourteen years ago)

was reminded recently that Tom McCarthy directed the original, mostly scrapped pilot for this.

Jennifer Ehle played Catelyn and Tamzin Marchant played Daenarys.

Ser Pounce == a kitteh. I forget which book he shows up in, but it's not the first, oops spoilers.

omar 13337713 (Leee), Sunday, 19 February 2012 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

I've read up to the third and I don't recall Ser Pounce. It wouldn't be surprising if he's been in it and I've forgotten, I have trouble keeping track of all the human minor characters.

Watched that season 2 trailer several times. It looks amazing and I haven't even seen season 1 yet. I can't believe I'll be waiting another year for it to hit DVD.

Moodles, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 02:17 (fourteen years ago)

do people really wait for tv shows to come out on dvd? and if so, why.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 05:19 (fourteen years ago)

I like a lot of HBO-type shows better in DVD (or Netflix/OnDemand/etc.) form - I want to be able to jump right into the next episode instead of waiting a week.
