i mean babies been getting born a long time before midwives arrived, and somehow it worked, but england national team have had a manager since day 1 just sayin

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:56 (fourteen years ago)

england should go with a 'selection committee for the lols like the #1 ranked cricket team. wait, cricket is still done by committee yeah? Or is it a manager now?

pandemic, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:58 (fourteen years ago)

iirc historically the england national team didn't have a manager originally. think Winterbottom was the first, mid 50s? selected by committee of gentlemen before then or sump'n

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

Although Walter Winterbottom was appointed as England's first ever full time manager in 1946, the team was still picked by a committee until Alf Ramsey took over in 1963.

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

might as well bite the bullet and do it X-Factor style

Number None, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

suggested that already in the other thread, wd be excellent if arry ad to sing

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

so

there's an argument that it is a job best done by an english/british manager

right?

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno if there's an argument that it's best done by an english.

i think there's an argument that it probably ought to be an english, but that argument might lead to hilarious discussion about what constitutes a "developing football nation"

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:04 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i kinda assumed that the team has to be of one nationality so the manager does too unless you are a 'developing football country' and need outside expertise.
england going with a foreign coach always seemed to be not quite playing the game, or a comment on our position in world football.

pandemic, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

the team has to be of one nationality

It doesn't though

Number None, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

trainings ran on time

lol

le ralliement du doute et de l'erreur (Michael White), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:09 (fourteen years ago)

xxp

yeah exackly think we might qualify as tactically inept enough to be a developing nation

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:09 (fourteen years ago)

comment on our position in world football.

Actually...

le ralliement du doute et de l'erreur (Michael White), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:10 (fourteen years ago)

Or what NV said

le ralliement du doute et de l'erreur (Michael White), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:10 (fourteen years ago)

half the teams in the world seem to have their own naturalized Brazilian guy nowadays, not that it helps usually

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:10 (fourteen years ago)

Sardines? The monster!

WRONG! It's canning sardines that's monstrous. Fresh grilled sardines are exquisite.

le ralliement du doute et de l'erreur (Michael White), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

i meant rather that the english media are pervasive/xenophobic enough and the english players are powerful enough that the introduction of any extra complicating factors would be disproportionately problematic

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:43 (fourteen years ago)

multixps - Roma's traditionally a leftist club, no? Insofar as that's a useful description of football fans. Also aiui the traditional choice of Rome's Jewish population, which wouldn't sit particularly easy with right wing ultraism (though yes, things are different in Italy)

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

i meant rather that the english media are pervasive/xenophobic enough and the english players are powerful enough that the introduction of any extra complicating factors would be disproportionately problematic

this is a decent argument. remember when capello took the job and we thought he'd put those surly prima donnas in their place? that went well.

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:49 (fourteen years ago)

redknapp as boss takes out player power- he's v good with cuntish talent- and media, to a large extent - they're in his pocket- and he's english and he's not moronic tactically/selection-wise and he's experienced. he'll keep it simple and positive and that'll keep the fans happy- even when results go against you it'll be swashbuckling ave-a-go stuff.

tell me what other boxes need ticking, tbh, or who else will tick em

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

when results go against us it won't be "oh swashbuckling expressionism" it will be "found out at this level to be tactically naive(see keegan)"

pandemic, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

don't think i've ever denied that arry could make a good fist of the england job. obviously what won't go away are systemic problems underneath. what happens once arry's finished?

also i wouldn't assume that he won't be indulgent of the usual suspects - remains to be seen imo

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

he's been indulgent of that type of player in the past, justified by the results for the most part.

capello was indulgent of the usual suspects without ever getting a performance from them imo

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:59 (fourteen years ago)

such a disspiriting mess, the england team. can't think of the last time they strung 2 or 3 coherent, convincing performances together.

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

early sven? maybe hoddle actually

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

i only consistently watch the tournaments so i'll take your word

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

Actually, come to think of it, Englaland could use a decent captain.

le ralliement du doute et de l'erreur (Michael White), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

98 or 02 tournament performances were good iirc, maybe even 00 but i didn't see a lot of that one. don't have any recollection of a string of convincing performances under either capello or schteve

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

04 was good until Rooney got crocked

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

maybe 3 matches good?

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

well croatia away was v good, don't know what the 2 games following that were though.

pandemic, Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

2000 was keegan i think, england were terrible iirc lost to romania and portugal i think

pandemic, Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

yeah 2000 was comical, late Neville fuck-up iirc but can't remember which one

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

phil, gave away a penalty.

pandemic, Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

thought that was group 98 wc tbh

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:22 (fourteen years ago)

nah, 98 was Owen wonder goal and Beckham sending off

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

no that was le saux fucking up and us conceding late on after owen equalised. keegan was doing the commentary and had just said "there's only one team that will win this now" (i presume he meant england)

pandemic, Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:24 (fourteen years ago)

xp

pandemic, Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:25 (fourteen years ago)

:D

Didn't we have that exact same picture on here yesterday?

The last time I can remember watching any England qualifier / friendly was seeing the last ten minutes or so of McClaren's umbrella disaster, so I'm far from qualified to answer this - but I had the impression that qualification for the last WC under Capello was pretty impressive?

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno i surf on my phone at work, apologies

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

xp no, it was efficient and competent but hateful to watch for the majority of the times iirc

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

I'm prepared to believe you, given that England were incompetent and hateful to watch in SA, and given that I couldn't name a single one of England's group opponents under Capello apart from Croatia.

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 10 February 2012 00:00 (fourteen years ago)

A piece on City's away form - "City’s struggles started with a 1-1 draw at Anfield on 27 November. Since that day only Wigan, QPR and Fulham have taken fewer points away from home, and all have played five games to City’s six."

Must say I hadn't noticed the pattern, and am a bit shocked by this. Big game against Villa then, who are dreadful at home iirc.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 10 February 2012 09:29 (fourteen years ago)

Haven't looked but would guess that their lead is pretty much the same at the top as it was on 27 Nov though.

So after tmrw LFC haven't another League game until March?

pandemic, Friday, 10 February 2012 09:50 (fourteen years ago)

fuck international weekends

dayove cool (Noodle Vague), Friday, 10 February 2012 09:54 (fourteen years ago)

Neither we do. Six games scheduled for April though, and that's not taking into account any cup run.
