“Unlike most artworks in a museum, you are allowed to touch this piece and to take away a piece of candy. Gonzalez-Torres made this artwork in memory of Ross Laycock. At the time the work was created, Ross had recently died of causes related to AIDS. The candy pile starts each day at 175 pounds, which was Ross’ ideal body weight. As visitors take candy, the pile gets smaller. This process mimics Ross’ weight loss as a result of his illness. Museum staff replenishes the candy regularly. Gonzalez-Torres’ decision to portray Ross with multicolored, shiny candies was a thoughtful one. Seeing such a large pile of candy on the floor stimulates notions of abundance, sweetness, and happiness—feelings associated with Ross, which the artist wished to share with viewers in a unique way.”

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 15:29 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah. That Gonzalez-Torres piece was one of the ones in the exhibit that hit me most viscerally.

Also, in the first room with the older photographic prints, they were playing music from this compilation

http://www.discogs.com/Various-AC-DC-Blues-Gay-Jazz-Reissues-Volume-One/release/860313

which I haven't been able to track down, but looks AMAZING.

I don't think I took a candy in D.C.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

i once took one of the sheets from the gun violence paper stack, followed by everyone else in the gallery rushing to take one

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:25 (fourteen years ago)

i did this at the frieze fair once and got a mean look from the woman who was minding the stand. i told her that if she wanted to display a fgt she had to learn how to be generous.

judith, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

For some reason I was reading the first gaythread I'd posted in — man I sound dumb.

tanuki, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

hey tanuki, what new felix gonzales-torres piece is up at the AIC? i was there last week and didn't see anything besides his date piece which is up permanently.

the first time i saw someone use the abbreviation FGT i was sort of shocked because it was in reference to a piece i made (as in like, "x + fgt = this piece") and it took me a second to realize it didn't mean faggot

1staethyr, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

I can't find anything about it on the AIC website — it's a large panel divided in two with text painted on each one and ends with something like "close-up of an ejaculating dick".

tanuki, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

waaaaait i think that's this piece by larry johnson:

:(

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Friday, 10 February 2012 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

I saw it a little over a year ago, again, and it brought back the feeling of the plague years quite vividly. Maybe only in people old enough, of course.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Friday, 10 February 2012 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

aw, i like it. i think i liked the faux-doc part the best but i'd have to rewatch it to make sure

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

that is my bf's favorite "gay" movie

tanuki, Friday, 10 February 2012 20:12 (fourteen years ago)

I do prefer Pvt Idaho, Paris Is Burning & Fight Club

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

I'm just not getting the wooden acting and awful sets and ridic narrative motion

tropical mall lady (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

it's meta?

I guess someone's not getting a boner from the prison stuff... See if you spot a future star acting under a psedonym.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

re: the sets, iirc he wasn't exactly rolling with a huge budget

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

Oh the prison thing I am totally into fwiw. But wouldn't it have been cheaper to just, like, go find somewhere outside with lots of rocks and dirt? It's kinda Querellian

tropical mall lady (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, he was coming off a banned Barbie-doll film xp

nah, more theatrical this way a la Un Chant d'Amour

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

OH OH Also I got season 3 of Mary Tyler Moore out of the library on a whim (I'd never really seen it before and always passed it over on Nick at Nite as a kid) and I am SO FUCKING IN LOVE W/ THIS SHOW, FUCK

tropical mall lady (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

Poison was his first feature iirc? The banned barbie film was his MFA thesis.

Hey gays!

sarahell, Friday, 10 February 2012 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

I have taken a piece of candy from the pile and a sheet of paper from the stack.

jaymc, Friday, 10 February 2012 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

hey gurl(z)

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Friday, 10 February 2012 21:02 (fourteen years ago)

you're in NY? xp

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Friday, 10 February 2012 21:02 (fourteen years ago)

T/judith - was the FGT curtain up at sfmoma when you visited?

sarahell, Friday, 10 February 2012 21:02 (fourteen years ago)

Me? No. This was in Chicago and San Francisco.

Although I may be in New York at the end of April.

jaymc, Friday, 10 February 2012 21:07 (fourteen years ago)

but which stack and which pile?

1staethyr, Friday, 10 February 2012 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

I'm all right, jack / keep your hands offa my FGT stack

tanuki, Friday, 10 February 2012 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

The pile was the Untitled (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) piece. I don't entirely remember what the stack-of-paper piece was. I gather he's done a few different ones. This was at SFMOMA in early 2004.

jaymc, Friday, 10 February 2012 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

The pile was at the Art Institute of Chicago, probably around the same time.

jaymc, Friday, 10 February 2012 22:18 (fourteen years ago)

i think the Sfmoma one in early 2004 was the same one that may or may not have been there when judith visited in 2010.

sarahell, Friday, 10 February 2012 23:06 (fourteen years ago)

i have a mental catalogue of every fgt i have seen irl. sfmoma doesnt figure. poison is great. that sirk thing is the only haynes im eh abt. poison is hilarious and sad and thaemlitz samples it and hot in some of the prison bits.

judith, Saturday, 11 February 2012 02:19 (fourteen years ago)
