“Unlike most artworks in a museum, you are allowed to touch this piece and to take away a piece of candy. Gonzalez-Torres made this artwork in memory of Ross Laycock. At the time the work was created, Ross had recently died of causes related to AIDS. The candy pile starts each day at 175 pounds, which was Ross’ ideal body weight. As visitors take candy, the pile gets smaller. This process mimics Ross’ weight loss as a result of his illness. Museum staff replenishes the candy regularly. Gonzalez-Torres’ decision to portray Ross with multicolored, shiny candies was a thoughtful one. Seeing such a large pile of candy on the floor stimulates notions of abundance, sweetness, and happiness—feelings associated with Ross, which the artist wished to share with viewers in a unique way.”

Yeah. That Gonzalez-Torres piece was one of the ones in the exhibit that hit me most viscerally.

i did this at the frieze fair once and got a mean look from the woman who was minding the stand. i told her that if she wanted to display a fgt she had to learn how to be generous.

hey tanuki, what new felix gonzales-torres piece is up at the AIC? i was there last week and didn't see anything besides his date piece which is up permanently.

the first time i saw someone use the abbreviation FGT i was sort of shocked because it was in reference to a piece i made (as in like, "x + fgt = this piece") and it took me a second to realize it didn't mean faggot

I can't find anything about it on the AIC website — it's a large panel divided in two with text painted on each one and ends with something like "close-up of an ejaculating dick".

The pile was the Untitled (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) piece. I don't entirely remember what the stack-of-paper piece was. I gather he's done a few different ones. This was at SFMOMA in early 2004.

The pile was at the Art Institute of Chicago, probably around the same time.

i think the Sfmoma one in early 2004 was the same one that may or may not have been there when judith visited in 2010.

i have a mental catalogue of every fgt i have seen irl. sfmoma doesnt figure. poison is great. that sirk thing is the only haynes im eh abt. poison is hilarious and sad and thaemlitz samples it and hot in some of the prison bits.
