Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 February 2012 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

Welbeck had to change direction to find Ivanovic's foot to fall over.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 5 February 2012 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

disappointed Utd didn't win that in the end

Number None, Sunday, 5 February 2012 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

howard webb. what a bag of shit

Alan Shearer (ken c), Sunday, 5 February 2012 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

couldn't even win the game for united. needs to improve

Alan Shearer (ken c), Sunday, 5 February 2012 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

He was all over the place tbf. Not just in Utd's favour

Number None, Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

exactly, needs to improve!

Alan Shearer (ken c), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

what's the point of him refereeing if it doesn't result in united win?

Alan Shearer (ken c), Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

fantastic goals from cisse and mata today. cisse's has gotta be up there with goal of the season.

kid steel (cajunsunday), Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

Never in doubt.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

capello tells italian tv that terry shouldn't have been dropped as captaion

:0

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 February 2012 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

So now what? Why did the FA cut him out of the decision process?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 5 February 2012 21:48 (fourteen years ago)

p sure the fa could only countenance him being stripped of the captaincy and so just bypassed capello. don't see this statement making any difference.

zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Sunday, 5 February 2012 21:49 (fourteen years ago)

I thought we already knew that?

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 5 February 2012 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

(Not specifically the Italian TV bit, but the fact that Capello was dead against it)

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 5 February 2012 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe he'll quit in protest?

John Barnes was saying on 5Live this morning (i think, I was half asleep) that Terry should either have kept the captaincy or been kicked out of the squad entirely. That this mid-point punishment is a joke. Reasonable point IMO.

Upt0eleven, Sunday, 5 February 2012 21:52 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, but that Capello is publicly saying so is the thing surely?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 5 February 2012 21:53 (fourteen years ago)

john barnes 100%

either 'innocent til proven guilty' and ride out the public scorn (if it comes) or drop him entirely

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 February 2012 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

He may yet be dropped entirely. There's no match at the moment, so there's no team at the moment.

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 5 February 2012 21:58 (fourteen years ago)

would have been announced with the captaincy imo

tho capello probably has mandated control of team selection so

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

My thoughts:

1)Torres is a shadow of his former self. He bottled it big time today when he should have scored.
2)De Gea is a fantastic shot stopper - that save right near the end was amazing - but still looks brittle
3)Evra is still good going up the wing, but seems to have forgotten how to defend
4)Ferdinand can't move any more, probably because of his back, which is a shame
5)Terry being stripped of the captaincy is A Good Thing. Capello saying it's A Bad Thing is in itself A Bad Thing. If Terry gets dropped from the England team this will also be A Good Thing, but if he doesn't it doesn't mean that the loss of the armband isn't A Good Thing.
6)I don't really give much of a fuck about England anyway, until a major tournament comes around I don't even watch them or pay any attention to the results, and I care even less about who the captain is. But I don't like John Terry.
7)That Mata goal was incredible

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

otm

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

Stan Collymore tweeting about the odd standards of Capello: it was seemingly fine to take the captaincy away from Terry for allegedly shagging his ex-team mate's ex-girlfriend, but is utterly unacceptable to take it away for 'allegedly' racially abusing an opponent (and the whole incident being caught on video).

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:27 (fourteen years ago)

Despite being a cunt I hate, I feel sorry for EBJT here. Innocent until proven guilty and all that - he shouldn't be getting punished before a verdict has been made. Even if that puts the FA in an awkward position, they have just officially branded dude a racist, which is not cool. They should have let Capello and EBJT sort something out (can't go while the court case hangs over his head and doesn't want to get into a Holland 96 situation based on rumour? frame it as whats best for england? idk)

[Of course I am talking by official powers. Personally I'm fucking happy the cunt is getting his comeuppance.]

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:32 (fourteen years ago)

they have just officially branded dude a racist

No, they haven't

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

Even if that puts the FA in an awkward position, they have just officially branded dude a racist, which is not cool

what they've done is said that the england captaincy won't be given to somebody under official investigation for racist abuse, tbf

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

Why else have they dropped him then, if not for thinking he is a racist who'll split the squad?

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

They've taken the captaincy away from him while the case goes on. If an allegation of racism was made against any of us in our jobs it's very likely we'd be suspended while it was investigated. It doesn't mean we've been pre-judged. (xps)

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

fair enough.

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

NBS otm. Keeping Terry as captain serves no purpose whatsovever. Not Capello's (who's an idiot for calling it a bad thing), not Terry's (who's a vile weed and a cunt tbh) and not England's purpose either.

Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:41 (fourteen years ago)

The captaincy does have some kind of mythical power that tbh I don't really understand. It's a kind of symbolic leading-the-troops-into-battle role, which is objectively ludicrous, but if that's how the players think of it then it's nonetheless sort-of true.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

I do feel this captaincy thing holds way more importance in England than say here in the Netherlands. There's hardly ever any fuss about it, not that I can remember. Here the captain usually is the most experienced player. I mean Van der Sar has been the captain for years and years. I frown upon goalies being the captain but otoh I don't think anyone else would've done more with it.

Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

Say what you like about JT, but he really is quite suited to it - you'd like to see him charging off into no-man's-land on the first day of the Somme.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:53 (fourteen years ago)

Let's not forget about the toss though xp

Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:53 (fourteen years ago)

Ha! xp

Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

Capello's presumably pissed cos he was the fool that reinstated him the first time

Number None, Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

When England look rudderless and lacking in motivation, as they always tend to, he can say 'well, it wasn't my fault...the FA sacked my captain'.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

I don't remember England captaincy being A Thing pre-Beckham. I mean, there might have been a regular captain (I honestly can't remember), but I don't think there was any sense of it being a role which existed outside of a match. It was only when Beckham announced he was 'resigning' the role of captain that I picked up on this idea.

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 5 February 2012 22:58 (fourteen years ago)

who will lead the cuntish mutiny now?

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

Despite being a cunt I hate, I feel sorry for EBJT here

You know, I think technically this means "Although I am a cunt that I hate, I feel sorry for EBJT"

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

ha

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

Shearer being captain was definitely a thing - remember him successfully staring down the FA when he whacked Neil Lennon? Platt's captaincy I remember being important too, though not why.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

ah they were captains yeah but i agree with NBS their captaincy was not a huge deal

iirc shearer threatened to retire fully

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

christ that second penalty is a fucking embarrassment

tbf to utd the first shout for sturridge looked good in the first half, but webb ffs

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

avb under pressure

dunno

i mean yeah

but like yknow

hope he gets to the end of next season

but he won't

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:14 (fourteen years ago)

What does the future hold for Andre Villas Boas?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

tbf i am a cunt but my bad, i meant ebjt is a c

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

the following players - who have never officially captained England - have worn the captain's armband during the course of a match when the official captain and vice-captain have been sent off or substituted:

Robbie Fowler
Danny Mills
Emile Heskey
Phil Neville
Jamie Carragher
David James
Gary Neville
James Milner
Ashley Cole

I'd poll these but I've spent my quota on the avb one

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:17 (fourteen years ago)

Could reasonably imagine any of them as captain except the first three

Monkee Trial (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:19 (fourteen years ago)

fuckin warnock, that better turn into a serious ban

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Sunday, 5 February 2012 23:27 (fourteen years ago)
