onimo (onimo), Thursday, 1 February 2007 10:47 (nineteen years ago)

Accordign to Wikipedia:

Alienist is an obsolete term for a psychiatrist or psychologist. It was given renewed attention when used in the title of the 1994 novel The Alienist by Caleb Carr.

Although currently not often used, the term "alienist" is still used in psychiatric hospitals to describe those mental health professionals who evaluate defendants to determine their competency to stand trial. The term first arose in the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries to describe individuals who aided law enforcement in trying to find serial killers.[citation needed] It is believed the term alienist was used because serial killers were considered somewhat alienated from their emotions. Others believe that the term was used because serial killers and others of their ilk were so "alien" in behavior from what society understood as normal.

It is used in Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness to describe the doctor in the Company headquarters in Belgium. It also appears in H.P. Lovecraft's 1927 novella The Case of Charles Dexter Ward to describe the doctors who examine the protagonist during his stay at Dr. Waite's psychiatric hospital, as well as in his story Beyond the Wall of Sleep. More recently, see also Sebastian Faulks - Human Traces (2005).

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 1 February 2007 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

In medicinenet.com:

An "alienist" is "one who treats mental diseases; a mental pathologist; a 'mad doctor,'" according to The Oxford English Dictionary. The OED also defines "alienation" as in this sense as "mental alienation; withdrawal, loss, or derangement of mental faculties; insanity." The insane were thought estranged (alienated) from their normal faculties. The root of "alienist" is the Latin "alienare," to make strange. The word "alienist" came across the Channel to England from France where "aliené" meant insane and an "aliéniste" was one who cared for the mentally ill: a psychiatrist.

247 searches for the Requiem For A Dream Theme Song in a week wtf?

There are billions of searches being conducted every week, and the first two Google hits for [requiem for a dream theme song] are ILX threads, so it's not TOO surprising.

Suzie Demarchi can in no shape or form be compared to BRIAN MANNIX. Now there is a knob and a half. oh the humanity

Hard like armour (Hard like armour), Friday, 2 February 2007 00:00 (nineteen years ago)

Hey I loved the uncanny x-men!

But then I was only about 14.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 2 February 2007 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

And I was also in the Geisha fan club. Shut up that's why.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 2 February 2007 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

haha. re: the uncanny x-men: a friend and i saw them at the sydney entertainment centre and decided, since our seats were right at the side of the stage we were going to run up there and make out with brian mannix centre stage. anyway, we ran down the stairs, my friend jumped over the barrier first and, before i could make the jump, i saw bouncers swarm on her. i pulled a total homer simpson and backed away slowly leaving her to her fate. im such a great friend!

sunny successor agrees: gay dad always trumps slutty mom (katharine), Friday, 2 February 2007 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

What, a club for fans of actual Geisha girls?

xpost - ah, these must be Australian bands.

chap (chap), Friday, 2 February 2007 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

My best friend & I took sleeping bags & lined up hours early for a 1927 concert at Belmore Oval. When the gates opened, there were only half a dozen people in the line. There ended up being only 2 rows of people against the stage for the entire concert. So sad.

Hard like armour (Hard like armour), Friday, 2 February 2007 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

hahahahaha

jimbo (electricsound), Friday, 2 February 2007 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

1927! Oh man, I'd mercifully forgotten all about them. And now I'm reminded of that dreadful band that did "Scratch my Back", what were they called? The dorks in skivvies?

(Look what you started Nabisco!)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 2 February 2007 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 10 May 2012 00:23 (fourteen years ago)

There's nothing really interesting to tell — just a horribly overboard attempt to create a meme out of g3ntlyfallingblood and leave people baffled about why it was being googled in such huge numbers. It wasn't some sophisticated hacking scheme if that's what you're wondering. I didn't choose the thread for any special reason except that it popped up in random threads and the title seemed interesting. I still feel like shit that it caused server issues, and I should have figured that would happen. dunno.
