La Cochina Mexicana.

Je55e, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

Ha ha I was going to compare it to The Alley but I feel bad for Jenny, everyone piling on her restaurant recommendation. It was fine, it really was.

It's okay! It was one of three places and it sounds like you tried EAYC first, which is significantly less douchey. I mean, the Vortex has a skull door and that's cool but yeah, either it wasn't that shitty when I lived there or I didn't remember it well enough. Like I said, it wasn't my regular bar.

gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:34 (fourteen years ago)

EAYC looked nice for a drink but they didn't have much on their food menu.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

Who's going to Winter Brew this weekend again?

Jeff, Friday, 27 January 2012 22:14 (fourteen years ago)

Today's conversation inspired a new display name.

Burritos are one of the things I'm nostalgic about!!! (Eazy), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

Thank you. That makes my abject restaurant recommendation failure a little easier to handle.

Whoa weird. I was JUST thinking about clams, Clamato, and "No clam???!!!"

Je55e, Friday, 27 January 2012 23:49 (fourteen years ago)

No clam.

Je55e, Friday, 27 January 2012 23:50 (fourteen years ago)

long duk dan (dan m), Saturday, 28 January 2012 00:04 (fourteen years ago)

Do any of you dykes want to meet me for a burger or pancake and a beer? I want company out amongst people.

Je55e, Saturday, 28 January 2012 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

I think I'll never get used to the fact that "amongst" is not a real word! Or at least not the accepted American spelling. I really hope it doesn't sound like a Brit affectation b/c it completely is not.

Je55e, Saturday, 28 January 2012 00:48 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, class starts tomorrow at 9 and I have to be there early because I have to get keys and get somebody to show me how to use the fancy computer projector set up. So I'm in tonight.

I was thinking about going out to find food and/or watching a movie, but wound up getting verrrry sleepy and having a K8-E Balticburger style episode of narcolepsy on my couch at about 7:45.

Pretty bummed about missing Winter Brew :(

Finally figured out how to check e-books out of the library and all of my hold books say something like:

You are patron 13 out of 18 on the waiting list.
Library copies owned: 2

I really don't understand this manufactured scarcity with lending e-books. If something is apparently that popular, surely its fairly easy to license another copy to satisfy demand? Maybe I just don't understand enough about how this works from the library's end. I tried to check out some e-books from the Evanston library, but I quickly gave up. I think I'm still on the waiting list for one book three months later.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 30 January 2012 14:08 (fourteen years ago)

I don't get how it could be harder to get e-books than physical books. When I checked out the complete poems of Anne Sexton a couple of weeks ago, there was a whole shelf of the same exact book. Probably 15 copies. (Which reminds me, I should renew that check-out online. I love that you can do that.)

hey do any of you know the name of a contact person at the whistler? if so, would you email it to me? thankeeeeee.

La Lechera, Monday, 30 January 2012 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

L.L., per our Outloud conversation the other evening, let me know if you're still interested in getting some Frank's APA sample mailings!

Rotary Boy of the Month (WmC), Monday, 30 January 2012 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

Wait you didn't get my facebook message? I remembered yesterday and wrote to you.

La Lechera, Monday, 30 January 2012 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

"I remembered" <-- this is one of those lame phrases they put on those little ribbons for losers, like "I did my best!" and "A+ attitude!"

La Lechera, Monday, 30 January 2012 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't get it! I just checked again to see if I overlooked it, but I didn't get it at all.

Rotary Boy of the Month (WmC), Monday, 30 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

i hope i sent my address to the right WC. let's check and survey the damage...

La Lechera, Monday, 30 January 2012 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

no i sent it to the right person. check the "other" messages? or i can webmail it to you. i can't remember your actual email address, if i ever had it.

La Lechera, Monday, 30 January 2012 15:54 (fourteen years ago)

again, this is partially because the default check-out period is 3 weeks and because there's no real incentive to return an ebook before that 3 weeks is up (because there are no late fees) and it's not really clear you can even do so. so almost everyone who checks out an ebook will have it for 3 weeks, so the lists pile up.

I really don't understand this manufactured scarcity with lending e-books. If something is apparently that popular, surely its fairly easy to license another copy to satisfy demand? Maybe I just don't understand enough about how this works from the library's end.

i don't know for sure but my guess is that the budget for e-books at most libraries is still relatively small compared to hard copy books because it's still a new/unproven market. so they might not have enough $$$ to buy like 10 "copies" of a given e-book. there is also just general weirdness in the publishing/licensing/borrowing around e-books at this point so it could be something more arcane. libraries are very interested in tracking interest in various books and trying to meet that interest so i doubt the issue is really a library just not buying enough copies because of ignorance.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 30 January 2012 16:24 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, a lot of it is just that the explosion in ebooks has happened really quickly and libraries haven't caught up with events yet. Like, our ebook usage has skyrocketed even very recently, since so many people got ereaders for Christmas. And a lot of people (myself included) are loathe to cut print book budget to pay for ebooks, but I guess it will come to that soon.

Also, buying ebooks is kind of complicated -- you have to go through a separate vendor and most libraries in the area (not including CPL obv) are part of a larger consortium for ebooks too.

Also, basically all option for buying ebooks for libraries suck, so it's hard to get too excited about any of it. Some new vendors are getting into it, so maybe it will get better.

I'm talking only about public libraries FYI, I don't know about academic/special though I'm sure n/a does

I chipped a tooth on the buttbone (askance johnson), Monday, 30 January 2012 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

my boss asked me to look into it for our library, even though it's pretty out-of-character for us and not really in line with our policies, and dealing with overdrive for a collection of our size would be prohibitively expensive, and they're kind of the only kid on the block at this point.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 30 January 2012 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks guys, that is helpful to hear. I just always assumed it would be quciker and "easier" to get a new digital copy than a physical copy, but it makes sense to hear how the different budgets are tied into it.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 30 January 2012 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

Baker and Taylor have a new ebook product out that sounds interesting, though I think it would be just as expensive as overdrive. 3M has one coming soon too.

xp

That makes me fundamentally uneasy.

Also making me uneasy: woman on train this morning with cartload of bottles filled with what appeared to be urine.

The other day I saw a guy walking across the intersection of Clark and Foster pushing three cases of PBR that were resting comfortably in his wheelchair.
