LOS ANGELES (January 18, 2012) - Coming up next week, SCI-Arc hosts the Los Angeles showing of the Kaleidoscope of Pacific Standard Time (K-PST)’s RE:COMPOSITION, a two-city thematic program of four new performances dedicated to the liberating spirit of California-native John Cage, in honor of his centenary in 2012.

Conceived and produced by independent curator Julie Lazar, RE:COMPOSITION considers how current compositional practices are enabling artists in a variety of disciplines to re-conceive and reconstitute aspects of their art production.

RE:COMPOSITION will run in Los Angeles for two nights only, with the same program presented on Friday, Jan 27 and Saturday, Jan 28 from 8-10pm.

so the zola jesus/EMA thing is in march but this week's first fridays at NHM features the soft moon and light asylum (haven't heard former, not crazy about latter) and a performance by julia holter (who i <3)

Saw Julia Holter at the Welcome Inn Time Machine thing in Eagle Rock yesterday. Playing a little Korg synth in a couple James Tenney pieces. Overall I liked the show, but there was a whole lotta nothing between the occasional somethings.

The Danish collective SUPERFLEX built a life-size McDonald's replica, then flooded it to foreshadow capitalism's doom for the 21-minute film it made in 2009. The collective's new exhibition, right across from LACMA at 1301 PE, has a much subtler feel than the McDonald's flood, with framed posters downstairs and tastefully designed black "safety" lamps hung upstairs. But the quiet, slow-moving film that plays out on an upstairs wall is actually fairly aggressive. Entitled Modern Times, Forever -- at 240 hours long, it's the longest film ever made, the collective claims -- it simulates the demolition of Stora Enso, a massive modernist office building in Helsinki. Originally, the film played for its 10-day duration on the street in front of its subject, so you could see modernism persisting and disintegrating at the same time. 6150 Wilshire Blvd.; through March 3. West LA is rad! Why were you surprised that you had a nice time over here?

It's so strange and different over there. There are no trees but the streets are very clean. And very mediocre things are incredibly popular. I feel like I am on some weird vacation when I am there.

I don't know, man, it's just a different world. I'm pretty mystified by it, tbh.

I like visiting but I don't see how I could live there and not feel a great angst.

the non wealthy parts of west la (including the neighborhood "west la") are very interesting to me in that the are so anonymous. if i wanted to disappear/run away that's where i'd move.

I don't know man. I love living here. It's a little more spread out than East LA, but you've got some really good restaurants (especially Italian), easy access to lots of shopping and some really good movie theaters, a record store that I love (Record Surplus), plus closer to the ocean.

Also it's quiet, which I appreciate.

"i don't go west of fairfax" is the "i don't go above 14th street" of LA

There are some good movie theaters. The ocean, I don't know, how great is it really?
