Lower penalty conversion may be down to better goalkeeping overall, I think.

Yes, that was in your eyes Craig Bellamy.

"Andy Carroll - 34 touches. Fewest by a Liverpool starter."

Now is there any need for that stat, I ask you?

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 21 January 2012 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

indictment of the midfield if we're being serious

when does dalglish start getting the hit for any of this? he's still coasting afaict.

waning white energy (darraghmac), Saturday, 21 January 2012 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

Since their £85 million switch a year ago, how many goals have Carroll and Torres for their new clubs?

I think it's starting - but he's basically unsackable, so

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 21 January 2012 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

rafa had his shot, results are in, if we were to objectively look at an lfc manager of the past decade that has unfinished business at this club, we'd have to enter negotiations with the baggies

I think it's Carroll 4, Torres 6 from memory (all competitions)

The Guardian, Tuesday 2 August 2011

The Liverpool owner, John W Henry, has warned Kenny Dalglish and Liverpool that failure to qualify for the Champions League next season would be a "major disappointment" for the club.

"It's too early for us to talk about winning the league," said Henry according to reports on Monday. "[But] our main goal is to qualify for the Champions League. If we don't, it would be a major disappointment."

There are shades of last year at Blackburn about this. Need a botched Gerrard penalty to confirm.

I am in the pub and a stranger opposite me is really very aggressive when it comes to reviewing the Liverpool career of Jordan Henderson.

He's done alright and he might get better - but lord, for that amount of money and for Liverpool, he was not what was needed. Ditto Adam, at least he was cheaper and has been decent in spells. Downing, I'd've thought he'd've been better tbh, he looks an inexplicable signing but he was decent before.

The whole summer window - getting in those three, Coates who doesn't play, even Enrique looked awful today. And shipping Meireles out, getting shot of Cole, shifting Aquilani elsewhere. Hopeless.

We're disastrously short of creative players, it's awful.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 21 January 2012 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

dalglish wants one creative player on the pitch at any one time, it's like ultra-consolidation out there.

Downing is a real puzzle, i'll stan for that guy as an end product winger all day but no denying it's not happening for him.

Adams and Henderson just too stodgy when kuyt, lucas, gerrard et al are the other starters. That team today was basically a 150m bowl of porridge

waning white energy (darraghmac), Saturday, 21 January 2012 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

Otm for once. I don't get it; it's the forcing out of Meireles that's the thing. He was great in Dalglish's golden run, and we looked terrific when flexible. But this season has been a continual rowing back from that.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 21 January 2012 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

hennessy's footwork is frequently reminiscent of paul robinson's mid-decade work

Lol henry, that keane lad looks decent

waning white energy (darraghmac), Saturday, 21 January 2012 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

oy 'for once'

Meirelles was promised pay parity if he performed, lfc welshed, he left, dunno how much of it can be put down to dalglish but you assume at least some

waning white energy (darraghmac), Saturday, 21 January 2012 20:34 (fourteen years ago)

Downing needs the team to be built around him having enough space to be good at crossing and enough space for Carroll to do something with it once he's crossed it into the box.

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 21 January 2012 20:36 (fourteen years ago)

The whole set-up is obviously wrong for Carroll; I don't see how that's so for Downing though.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 21 January 2012 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

i don't see how they don't need the same setup tbh

waning white energy (darraghmac), Saturday, 21 January 2012 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

don't think there as far off as some recent performances suggest. obvious thing is a striker. more creativity in midfield has been a prob for years..but even one genuinely great attacking midfielder, either on the wing or through the middle, would make a massive difference.

Crikey:

Kenny Dalglish tore into his under-performing Liverpool players after a lacklustre defeat at Bolton Wanderers, accusing them of thinking they only had to turn up to win and disrespecting both their opponents and the traditions of their own club.

"The most disappointing thing for me was that I don't think the approach was correct," the Liverpool manager said after Bolton's surprisingly comprehensive 3-1 win. "The foundations of this club have always been based on respect for other people. You can't come to places like this thinking all you need to do is turn up to get a result. That's what I think we did today, and that's why we were taught a lesson. It's not the right way to represent the club. I don't think we were even ready to play the game. That's probably why we lost a goal after four minutes. I don't think the way we went about our work was correct."

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 21 January 2012 21:37 (fourteen years ago)

Think Kenny should take a lot of the blame for thinking Gerrard-Adam is a centre midfield partnership in 2012. The week after playing five at the back vs Stoke at Anfield.

oh come on stevie, suuure on paper you might have seen a five man backline but the way they lined up was actually an eight man centre midfield

hopefully not soon. because for a neutral i get inordinate pleasure in watching liverpool get done. almost as good as seeing arsenal beaten.

zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Sunday, 22 January 2012 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

Loads of great goals tonight with hardly a big club in sight.

Custom table since weekend of 10/11th December shows Sunderland in second. Mad Martin can do no wrong so far, especially when you look at the shite they played under Bruce.

The weekend will only be saved by City and Arsenal winning today. At a push I'll accept only a Man City victory.

So glad the LFC game was on too late for me to watch.

Chelsea to act over alleged racist chants after Norwich match

Another Wein bites the dust (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 22 January 2012 11:47 (fourteen years ago)

Liverpool looked awful yesterday but their defence, which is very good generally, had an off-day. I get the feeling they miss Lucas badly, a team like Bolton should not be able to run through yr midfield like that.

For all the talk about Suarez he hasn't actually scored that many goals this season, but he's clearly their best creative spark by miles. Adam should really be playing better than he is as well.

Generally, they look like a badly-balanced, ill-assembled Damien Comolli squad. Plus ca change.

Meanwhile Fulham are playing like a proper Martin Jol team, alternately heroic and calamitous. <3

Matt DC, Sunday, 22 January 2012 12:12 (fourteen years ago)

Mad psyched about today anyway. I was more confident before I'd remembered that Adebayor can't actually play today. Redknapp should really have given Defoe a run the team prior to this game, but he's manifestly unsuited to playing a lone striker. We need Bale through the middle at his best I reckon.

I should get on and get to the pub really.

Matt DC, Sunday, 22 January 2012 12:15 (fourteen years ago)

That Chelsea story isn't surprising is it, isn't it Chelsea that hisses at Spurs games?

Worst-case scenario today is Spurs beat City and get cocky, thereby derailing both their challenges, while Utd beat Arsenal and kick on from there. So I guess an Arsenal win is what I'm after.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 22 January 2012 13:15 (fourteen years ago)

The weekend will only be saved by City and Arsenal winning today

This is wrong on quite literally *several* levels. This is a great weekend which can only be marred by City and Arsenal winning today.

No, no, no - what's wrong with you people?
