I have a story. Bear with me.

'er indoors's macbook just fell off our wireless network. I could not get it to work. I tried everything I could think of but fail fail fail. Eventually I hassled Twitter for a solution. Loads of people tried to help but nothing worked. In the end I somehow fixed it by changing the router's bandwidth setting from 20 MHz to 40 MHz, and for some reason it changed the channel from 12 to 1 without asking me. So I tweeted the thing about it changing from channel 12 to channel 1 without asking me, and G4bby Mi11g4te of "y0u're t3rrible muri3l" fame replied with "soory that was me". I have no fucking idea what that was.

Yeah, I don't ever talk about contact with omgfamous people (you know my attitude to the whole fame/debasement thing), it was just literally the last thing I expected at that point, roughly on par with a ribenaberry coming through the chimney and doing the charleston.

Eh, computer equipment is just fuckin fussy, really. We all the time get ppl ringing up going BUT IT WAS WORKING UP TIL NOW as if that guarantees something will work forever without fail, and come on, thats not how anything modern works! When yr toaster or TV breaks, you dont go BUT IT WAS WORKING TIL LAST NIGHT, you go "oh, now it's died. I gotta work out why". For some effed up reason people dont apply that thinking to internet, and demand that it be fixed NAO even tho there is 2308275487 things that could cause the problem (wifi, modem failure, overheating, interference, shitty phone lines, tram going past [not kidding], ISP's servers died, internationl link died, ddos attack, etc etc etc... )god Im glad I dont work helpdesk anymore.

Yeah yeah of course, I did loads of time on phone support too so I completely get that. Ordinarily I'd look at what had changed but nothing had changed. Google was useless and the MBA gave me zero help.

Back in the '90s (so pre-screen sharing etc) I had a woman who couldn't log into the isp through the terminal user/pass thing. Conversation went on for at least 15 minutes, spelling her user & pass, checking the case, checking the caps lock wasn't on etc. Turns out she never once pressed enter, so her terminal screen was like this

You can't see what the idiots are doing, Ive heard so many stories about callers who say "yep" to everything theyre asked to do, and then admit theyre actually in the car/at work and not in front of said connection at all, I mean WTF.
