watching the lastest episode did make me realize that this show is like the epitome of everything that whiney and other sitcom classicists hate abt the modern sitcom tho like how many jokes are people making ::groans:: puns and saying things in a oddball wayyyyy out of left field with add style patter

I'd been trying to put my finger on what seemed most 'off' about this show. I think this is it.

I love that they are playing old episodes I missed the first time around, Max's coming out episode was super hilarious

I want to talk about Penny's date but it so spoils it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but oh my god the writers were on a tear in this episode

also it will never happen but a cross-show Happy Endings/New Girl meeting between Penny and Schmidt would be amahze

Man, I don't think "cold" applies to this show at all.

there is a definite element of surreality in the show that can generate detachment (I felt that in the first episode of it I watched, where they were going to a wedding of I think one of Penny's exes) but, as I believe I said upthread, the friend dynamics and back-and-forth in this show is scarily like the interactions between at least one circle of my friends, plus the actor chemistry really does fill in a lot of blanks for me

but then again, weird slightly surreal shows have always been my bag when it comes to modern comedy (RIP Better Off Ted)

I'm starting to think he's funnier than his dad. Apples & oranges, sure, but Damon Jr. seems more adept at physical stuff and rapid-fire timing. And the fondue bit was genius.

i never found his dad funny. i remember an ep of My Wife and Kids where Damon Wayans spends the whole episode explaining to Junior how wack weed is in the uncoolest, condescending ways possible. jennifer freeman was cute tho so

I actually never saw MW&K, but remember Damon Sr.'s standup being pretty funny. He was also one of the (very, very few) high points of the 1985-86 season of SNL.

my uncle wrote for In Living Color so being a kid and meeting the guy from "Men on Film" was an early life highlight (though as an incipient homosexual I also wanted to punch him, nice as he was). Anyway Jr clearly had the best moments in this ep.

The threesome stuff was terrible except it again showed how lame Dave is, and I like that they're comfortable with making him lame (maybe also due to that guy not being funny).

also: JAMES WOLK IS SO DREAMY, very Kyle Chandler-lite. I still wish Lone Star was on tv.

the 3some stuff also got us more classic comedy email jokes so i guess it was worth it

also most solid zing was calling dave ross i mean no one wants to be the ross

also yes, it is great, so much more a ~new episode of~ than the Parks & Rec special. (but: admire the realism of using shitty laptop audio, but the rapid-fire dialogue would have been better served by them using real mics offscreen)
