It's really not that hard to find Rittenhouse, is it? It was for a few weeks, I guess. I read that rye is I guess a particularly ... sticky spirit to make, which is why so few make it and why it's sometimes hard to find.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 January 2012 15:47 (fourteen years ago)

i heard it would be back in new england two months ago and it still isn't. luckily i have a stash of about 2.5 bottles.

i don't think the supply issues have as much to do with actual mashing/distilling challenges (though yes rye is a bit more annoying) than sales and demand. despite the cocktail revival and whatnot, rye sales numbers remain miniscule when compared to bourbon, so they used to only spend like four days a year distilling rye for rittenhouse. they're distilling more than that now, but what they were doing 4 years ago can't match the modest increase in demand that's been happening.

I just moved to Atlanta, and there is a liquor store called Total Wine that is better than anything in NJ (where i lived for 15 years). Im going to use this thread as a checklist for everytime i go in there.

They have about 4 different grades of George Dickel, going up to 16 (i believe), relatively ceheap too.

btw on this, yeah. it's a fun, characterful bourbon with good spice and woodiness and it's just a little rough around the edges. not "smooth" but not firewater at all. way more interesting than either beam regular or beam black.

call all destroyer, Friday, 13 January 2012 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks,i'll try it. And I misspoke above, it's Dickel 12

three weeks pass...

Bought my first bottle of Prichard's Rye and it's not bad, not bad at all. On my second old fashion now.

p sure this is a nat'l chain (there's at least one in NJ iirc and a few in CA). been wanting to try it but the nearest one to me is deep in the valley.

Prince Rebus (donna rouge), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 08:10 (fourteen years ago)

hey guys got any suggestions as to what may be a good bottle of single malt for around £100?

Rosie 47 (ken c), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

i just found £100 in my offshore account so thought I'd blow it on a bottle of single malt

^it is. ive been to the one in West Orange, NJ, and it's nowhere near as good as the one down here. it's like being a kid in a candy store for me.

And there I was, pondering what to treat myself to after getting my DC tax refund. I will neither spend it on a single-malt whisky nor spend it all on an artisanal rye, but thanks for the inspiration!

i'm skipping over thousands of posts straight to the end, but, have you guys had the bulleit rye? it is nice. i am on a rye kick.

more like slayla (NZA), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

not yet. closest i've come is one of the willett cask strength ryes.

call all destroyer, Friday, 10 February 2012 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

btw if for any reason an ilxor just happened to be in the central kentucky area i would be more than willing to take them to tour one or more of the many distilleries in the area (off the top of my head buffalo trace, four roses, makers mark, woodford reserve, wild turkey all within 30 minutes of here)

more like slayla (NZA), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

awww man every year i say i'm going to do the bourbon trail and every year something comes up. but we should kick it if i ever get my act together.

call all destroyer, Friday, 10 February 2012 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

insider tip on bourbon trail: you have to start EARLY, all distillery tours shut down at 3pm.

more like slayla (NZA), Friday, 10 February 2012 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

one of our future vacations is going to be a bourbon trail/horses thing. who knows when. but some day.

i love bulleit, but i'm not a fan of their rye ;(

Rittenhouse 100 FTW.

I got a bottle of Jefferson Presidential Select for my birthday. Never heard of it but can't wait to try!

You know what sucks? Cutty Stark. Boo.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 February 2012 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

Just got a bottle of the small batch Black Maple Hill last night. I really like it. A lot.

Sauvignon Blanc Mange (B.L.A.M.), Thursday, 1 March 2012 14:36 (fourteen years ago)

Cutty Shark goes down rough even cut with water. Almost finished my bottle of Russell's Reserve Rye, it's not bad.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 1 March 2012 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

Good call somewhere up there about the Jim Beam Devil's Cut. Not generally a Beam fan, but this is good stuff.

You're a notch, I'm a legend (Bill Magill), Thursday, 1 March 2012 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

it was "call all destroyer"s recommendation. a good one

You're a notch, I'm a legend (Bill Magill), Thursday, 1 March 2012 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

glad u liked, bill.

speaking of russell's reserve rye, i dont know if anyone here is a fan of regular wild turkey 101 proof rye, but if you are you may want to grab the next couple bottles you see. there's an 81 proof wt rye expression coming out soon, and while the 101 isn't going away completely, it's going to get a lot tougher to find.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 1 March 2012 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

How does the Wild Turkey Rye compare to Russell's Reserve or Jim Beam ? Is it as sweet? I've never been a fan of WIld Turkey.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 1 March 2012 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

i've never had the russell's reserve rye so can't make that comparison but wt rye is for sure better than any of the current beam ryes and imo not as good as rittenhouse. it's too hot for me but some people swear by it.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 1 March 2012 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

Anyone tried Angel's Envy bourbon? Heard nothing but good things.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 1 March 2012 22:05 (fourteen years ago)

at home lately been drinking rittenhouse (available again in local spots! hurray!) and a bottle of rebel reserve i bought on a whm; it's not bad.

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 2 March 2012 03:45 (fourteen years ago)

hah when rittenhouse came back to mass last month i went a little nuts; now have 5 unopened bottles to get me through the lean times.

call all destroyer, Friday, 2 March 2012 03:50 (fourteen years ago)

I think Ritterhouse is one of the only Ryes I haven't tried. Maybe it's not stocked in the south.

JacobSanders, Friday, 2 March 2012 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

where are you, jacob? rittenhouse availability varies wildly from state to state but most places get a little bit i think.

JacobSanders, Friday, 2 March 2012 04:25 (fourteen years ago)

I got a bottle of Jefferson Presidential Select for my birthday. Never heard of it but can't wait to try!

After a small birthday taste with my dad that wasn't really enough to judge by, I had a glass last night. Outside of high-end scotch this is the most complex drink I've ever had. Amazingly smooth and it seems to activate all the different taste areas of my tongue. So good I almost feel bad about consuming it.

Wild Flag Post (dan m), Friday, 2 March 2012 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

wow, that's quite a recommendation!

tehresa, Friday, 2 March 2012 23:00 (fourteen years ago)

Rittenhouse abounds here. Surprise twist: Old Overholt makes a better Old Fashioned!

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 2 March 2012 23:19 (fourteen years ago)

xp i'd agree, i love my jeffersons 18!

call all destroyer, Friday, 2 March 2012 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

Went to a tasting last night, got to try some rare/expensive stuff, some faves were:

Strathisla 40
Talisker 30
Laphroaig 25

The Laphroaig in particular was a revelation because I don't like the standard one at all. Much smoother and the peat wasn't obnoxious anymore. Lovely aftertaste. Could never afford a bottle though!

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 10:45 (fourteen years ago)

I'm quite tempted to join one of the Master of Malts tasting clubs, or at least get some of their sample sets.

Just read a book by some woman food blogger who goes to Europe to learn about whiskey (it ends with what I felt was a cursory take on bourbon). Anyway, I was surprised to learn that the Scotch and Irish whiskey was just as corporate and incestuous as the American whiskey industry, owned by the usual multi-nationals and rarely owned by a company of the same nationality (ie French company owning Irish whisky company, etc.). As always, there are exceptions. But still, for example, Laphroaig was for a long time owned by Pernod Ricard. Now it's owned by Beam, Inc.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 13:12 (fourteen years ago)

yeah pernod ricard still owns a couple of brands i think?

99 drams of whiskey, right? i read this, it was ok. she def did not do justice to bourbon. but she also got most of her facts right which is hard to do in this industry.
