More contenders for the top spots?

Do you know what the secret of comity is? (Michael White), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

Gazza was famously injured most of 91-93, if that's serious

pls

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

my mistake, I always have you down as some sort of whippersnapper

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

Messi was too young, often injured during peak Ronaldo at Utd. Ronaldo, Henry starting to wind down, Kaka more of a shout. Only once they sorted Messi's fitness (they still tend to rest him like once every six games) did he overtake.

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

Ronaldinho*, Henry

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it gets p incestuous and murky from undisputed ronaldinho to undisputed messi, and that's not a bad thing- as nakh says the golden days btwn peak maradona and - i dunno who the next 'undisputed might even be? say zidane?- had an eclectic mix of contenders in every position you could wish for

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

i mean for a minute there in 02 ilx would no doubt have polled pablo aimar as a genuine top 3 player

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

Stoichkov v. Baggio for the mid 90s like Ronnie v. Henry for the mid 00s surely

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

in fairness my knowledge of the time is entirely based on USA 94 and Italian football on Channel 4

Number None, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

― carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, January 10, 2012 7:10 PM (10 minutes ago)

yeah i think so

i remember the kids at school repeating the stoichkov/romario/stoichkov/romario commentary (tyldesley?) after they'd sonned ynahtid

i dont think i watched though, i only really watched football italia and collected stickers

hegel-lacan girl (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

i was into that milan team in a big way, could recite stats and line-ups etc, lol 11 yr olds

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

the EPL is more interesting than a few yrs ago cuz there are five high-level teams who play good football (citeh, tottenham, arsenal), intermittently play good football (ynahtid) or provide some sort of intrigue (chelsea)

in 2k7 or so chelsea and liverpool were both relentlessly dull relentless attritional crap and none of the lower-mid table 'can play a bit' sides could actually play like swansea are right now

hegel-lacan girl (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

all true

still feel like mourinho brought the attrition with him, he made the central midfield three the vogue formation, then dropped the natural wingers that made it even vaguely watchable

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

an eclectic mix of contenders in every position you could wish for

― carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, January 10, 2012 7:05 PM (27 minutes ago)

there is still a fair array of talent in most positions (apart from central defence) compared to the mid-late 90s, it just gets overlooked beneath the rather too obvious messi/ronaldo top tier, which isn't actually a top tier so much as messi deciding when he wants to take his feet off c-ron's fingertips and watch him fall away

hegel-lacan girl (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno, you look around and fink oo's better than scotty and wo' ee gives you and i just kent see anyone out there

Viva Brother Beyond (ithappens), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

Tottenham centre-back William Gallas has declared that he would like play in either America or Qatar before he finally decides to hang up his boots.

homie MLS ain't no retirement league any more, gtfo

bomb.gif (dan m), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

awww rlly tho dan

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

oops sorry forgot henry

bomb.gif (dan m), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

& keane & beckham & marquez?

hegel-lacan girl (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

the epl was a retirement league in the mid 90s

hegel-lacan girl (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

srsly tho maybe if a player is an oldster goal scorer he'll have a good shot but a 34 year old center back will get smoked

marquez has been objectively awful here & was benched during the team's run at the playoffs

bomb.gif (dan m), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

sorry to bring this up in a non MLS thread but past it oldsters thinking they can come here and get paid because of becks et al gets my hackles up

bomb.gif (dan m), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

being decent doesn't mean its not still a retirement home

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

gallas is still alright, and he was just about the fastest centreback around not so long ago

hegel-lacan girl (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

but i can see why you resent him equating a fairly competitive league with a series of extended slow-motion training sessions in the desert

Hate to break it to you but the MLS is still seen like that, a retirement home for European has-beens tbh.
I think from Holland the MLS was 'enriched' with N'Kufo (Seatlle) and Koevermans the last two years. I think Aron Winter is manager somewhere?

I certainly wouldn't have, but hey. (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

I should have added that I hate the idea of any league lending itself to be a retirement home like that, and do not wish it on the MLS either

I certainly wouldn't have, but hey. (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

torsten frings is playing for toronto huh

this basically

bomb.gif (dan m), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

also former ynahtid also-ran richard eckersley

2009–2012 Burnley 0 (0)
....
2011–2012 → Toronto (loan) 23 (0)
2012– Toronto 0 (0)
2012– → Burnley (loan) 0 (0)

hegel-lacan girl (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

winter coaches at toronto, that team is beyond basket-case status and has been for years

n'kufo was waived by seattle hours before their opening day match last season, iirc he didn't contribute very much there

bomb.gif (dan m), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

How's John Rooney getting on?

Number None, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

gone

bomb.gif (dan m), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

Noooooo! Still he got a trip to New York out of it, that's a success of sorts.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

is freddie still there

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

japan

bomb.gif (dan m), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

huh

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

hasn't been in the MLS in ages though has he?

Number None, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:34 (fourteen years ago)

anyway sorry for the derail, just think that if Gallas wants a last payday he'd be better off in Qatar than flying coach 2000mi cross-country to play against hungry Colombian 20somethings who have been getting poached from the top clubs down there left and right

xp yeah he left after 2010 and went to celtic
