sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:29 (fourteen years ago)

I thought up there was Liverpool country?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:30 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, liverpool is probably more popular overall but more so among the older generation i'd say.

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

Hughes in, Bent top target (huh?)

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

I know this Villa team are bad but surely they aren't that bad?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

McLeish, innit. Big haddy.

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:29 (fourteen years ago)

If Bent does leave, surely it'll be to Liverpool?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

Though thinking about it, is a return to Spurs at all feasible?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:32 (fourteen years ago)

Can we please not sign any more English strikers.

pandemic, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

^^^ Cosign.

Given that Redknapp sold Bent I can't see him going in for him again, and I don't think he's the player we want if Adebayor gets injured. Don't think he'd suit the way we play now, and I'm not sure Bent would want to go back himself.

Can see Newcastle going in for Bent if they have to sell Ba in the transfer window.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:14 (fourteen years ago)

Sunderland need a striker

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

mark hughes will prolly sign bent

Alan Shearer (ken c), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

oh i should learn to read

Alan Shearer (ken c), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

newcastle, yeah

He doesn't rly suit a passing/possession team, so spurs/arsenal out, not sure lfc is any fit, utd intriguing but no point they've already got three good strikers and rooney, chelsea play too high and compressed.

Villa a good fit for him, personnel-wise, mcleish notwithcunting

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:44 (fourteen years ago)

This is moot as Villa have already paid insane money for him and will only sell if someone offers even more insane money, and by the time you're in that territory you can probably get a much better forward than Darren Bent.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

that has always been true, and yet

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

Btw when I said no-one cared about the premiership, I obviously was talking about in terms of award giving and not in terms of popularity. It is like comedies come Oscar season. Doesn't mean people haven't spent all year talking quoting jokes when Daniel Day Lewis ends up winning Best Actor.

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

I was wondering: when was the last time the best player in the world (the actual one) was playing in the English league?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:56 (fourteen years ago)

Ronaldo doesn't qualify?

Number None, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

I know this has been done on the 'players of the 00s' thread but the case for Henry c. 2003 is pretty strong.

boxall, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:00 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah Ronaldo was head and shoulders above the pack for two years there.

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

both cases p strong, as is case for keane and or vieira were dm position ever to be counted, or stephen carr if rb were in the running

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:02 (fourteen years ago)

xp if you mean ronaldo was aller than messi, then yeah sure, otherwise he was in the mix don't push it

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think Vieira or Keane could ever be picked because of Fatty Ronaldo and Zizou playing at the same time. Before that... Lineker?

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

Paul McGrath

Number None, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

gazza since lineker

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:07 (fourteen years ago)

Peter Reid unlucky to play in the Platini/Maradona era.

ERIC CANONTA FOR PRESIDETN! (onimo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

on the real though...Schmeichel

Number None, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:09 (fourteen years ago)

prob

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

Was Gazzaq the best in the world while in England though? Surely Maradona/Baresi/van Basten was better than him in '90.

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

i.e. maybe when he went to italy? i dunno much about his time there other than comedy boobs.

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

Otm xp.. I discount the British-based players as a matter of course, but you can definitely make a case for Henry (but then Ronnie) and Ronaldo (but then Messi). Even shearer (but then Ronaldo). It's slim pickings for thirty years' watching though.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

1991-93 he might have a shout?

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:31 (fourteen years ago)

henry and c ronaldo probably played better than anyone for a season and ronaldo was probably the actual best player in 07/08 too, whereas henry probably never was (zidane and ronaldo were still brilliant when they wanted to be until 2004 or so, when ronaldinho took over)

hegel-lacan girl (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

Players in England to have won the Ballon d'Or:

2001 Michael Owen
1968 Best
1966 Charlton
1964 Law
1956 Matthews

get ready for the banter (NotEnough), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:38 (fourteen years ago)

shearer was never remotely close i mean in 91/93 there was van basten (just), laudrup, romario, matthaus, baggio, stoichkov, gullit, rijkaard, hagi, maldini, baresi, abedi pele, butragueño, mancini, stojkovic....

hegel-lacan girl (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

english football is probably more interesting now than it was during the 05-09 peak

hegel-lacan girl (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

Gazza was famously injured most of 91-93, if that's serious. Best player in that period was ... maybe Baggio? More likely one of the Milan or possibly Marseille sides of the time. Or Koeman, jeez they were great days.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

koeman? a decent centre-back who could take a shot from long-range.

zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

Not insignificant talents. He could roam and pass a bit too iirc. He was no Sammer though, it's true.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

english football is probably more interesting now

More contenders for the top spots?

Do you know what the secret of comity is? (Michael White), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

Gazza was famously injured most of 91-93, if that's serious

pls

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

my mistake, I always have you down as some sort of whippersnapper

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

Messi was too young, often injured during peak Ronaldo at Utd. Ronaldo, Henry starting to wind down, Kaka more of a shout. Only once they sorted Messi's fitness (they still tend to rest him like once every six games) did he overtake.

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

Ronaldinho*, Henry

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it gets p incestuous and murky from undisputed ronaldinho to undisputed messi, and that's not a bad thing- as nakh says the golden days btwn peak maradona and - i dunno who the next 'undisputed might even be? say zidane?- had an eclectic mix of contenders in every position you could wish for

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

i mean for a minute there in 02 ilx would no doubt have polled pablo aimar as a genuine top 3 player

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

Stoichkov v. Baggio for the mid 90s like Ronnie v. Henry for the mid 00s surely

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

he fucking destroyed us in europe but ayala was the star of that team

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

stoichkov, if you were to v him v anyone, would prob be best v'd against hagi iirc?
