Number None, Monday, 9 January 2012 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

unattractive on the g side (a hoy hoy), Monday, 9 January 2012 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

Owen won European thingy back when it was two awards (and more prestigious somehow). Lampard was 2nd to Ronaldinho once.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 9 January 2012 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

henry came second in 2004, beckham second in 1999, shearer (lol) third in 1996.

the rest of the world doesn't care about the premiership no matter how much people think they do.

unattractive on the g side (a hoy hoy), Monday, 9 January 2012 21:37 (fourteen years ago)

There have been murders in Africa after EPL games.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 9 January 2012 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

I seem to recall an Arsenal fan committing suicide in Kenya as well?

boxall, Monday, 9 January 2012 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

an Arsenal fan was killed in Abbottabad iirc

Ismael Klata, Monday, 9 January 2012 21:48 (fourteen years ago)

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 10:32 (fourteen years ago)

66/1 at Wm Hill, they could've been a bit more generous

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 10:53 (fourteen years ago)

I think countries with their own sufficiently good and/or well-established leagues don't care that much about the Premiership but that's not actually that many in the grand scheme of things.

Obv. El Clasico is a much bigger deal internationally than any English club game (although the FA Cup Final might still come close?)

That Cantona thing is amazing.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 10:55 (fourteen years ago)

is it though? El Clasico i mean

Number None, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 10:58 (fourteen years ago)

The FA Cup Final's no big deal outside of England, is it?

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:00 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it is

Rivals el classico, for white ppl i'd say

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:05 (fourteen years ago)

even near 20 years of shit finals haven't dimmed its lustre

Poppy Newgod and the Phantom Banned (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:06 (fourteen years ago)

Fair enough. Never meant anything in Scotland, it was never shown on telly.

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

Actually United-Arsenal or United-Liverpool might be a bigger game in terms of sheer number of viewers. I watched United-Arsenal in a bar in Uganda a few years back and everywhere was absolutely rammed for it, and the game was being hyped and trailered on the radio for days beforehand.

But I have no idea really.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:17 (fourteen years ago)

The Utd-Chelsea was a big enough draw in the US to be shown live on some variety of normal telly, which was a first aiui. Torres could've picked better games to rosenthal one wide.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:21 (fourteen years ago)

That's what I was thinking, these days anyway, a big Premiership game would surely trounce the FA Cup Final - unless the final was United-Arsenal or United-Liverpool etc

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:21 (fourteen years ago)

thought Torres picked every game to do that now

Poppy Newgod and the Phantom Banned (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:21 (fourteen years ago)

FA Cup final here in Holland isn't that big a deal. Pales in comparison to games like ManU-ManC, Chelsea-Arsenal at least. It all depends on who the finalists are tbh. But that could also be because the cup on Holland hardly has any status.

I certainly wouldn't have, but hey. (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:22 (fourteen years ago)

Is English footy as a whole *the* big league/culture in the Netherlands, or does local football (or elsewhere) still take precedence?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:28 (fourteen years ago)

Jesus, the latter hopefully

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:29 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, fair enough in Uganda and, uh, Ireland

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:30 (fourteen years ago)

Dutch football comes first obv. After that the English league is the biggest. Spain's big but mostly because of Barca/Madrid. Both those teams individually are bigger than any English team though.

I certainly wouldn't have, but hey. (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:30 (fourteen years ago)

Oh and there's Schalke that has shed loads of Dutch fans.

I certainly wouldn't have, but hey. (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 11:31 (fourteen years ago)

I can't believe you're arguing if the EPL is followed at all outside of the UK. Of course it is. I see ppl in EPL club jerseys all the time and I live in Asia. Half of the cabs have a little Arsenal/Liv/ManU/Chelsea flag or something, ppl wake up at 3am to watch the games... they even sell ManU deodorant at the supermarket !!

Jibe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 12:02 (fourteen years ago)

nobody uses it within 10km of manchester city centre iirc

carpy deems (darraghmac), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 12:25 (fourteen years ago)

i think only one person argued that jibe? and was shot down pretty quickly

Number None, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 12:53 (fourteen years ago)

To be fair, I don't really know beyond our own press hype - which I obviously distrust on things like this. Certainly whenever I travelled abroad regularly there was never much interest in our clubs (that I could perceive) beyond what they did in Europe, but things were different then.

Union Jacks were a thing among a certain type of ultra for a while, that's the one undisputable to the contrary. But the brand-awareness guys keep quiet about that.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:26 (fourteen years ago)

it would only be a mild exaggeration to say everyone i know is an arsenal fan.

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:28 (fourteen years ago)

know irl that is. could be they're just the loudest and proudest for some reason though.

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:29 (fourteen years ago)

I thought up there was Liverpool country?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:30 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, liverpool is probably more popular overall but more so among the older generation i'd say.

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

Hughes in, Bent top target (huh?)

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

I know this Villa team are bad but surely they aren't that bad?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

McLeish, innit. Big haddy.

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:29 (fourteen years ago)

If Bent does leave, surely it'll be to Liverpool?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

Though thinking about it, is a return to Spurs at all feasible?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:32 (fourteen years ago)

Can we please not sign any more English strikers.

pandemic, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

^^^ Cosign.

Given that Redknapp sold Bent I can't see him going in for him again, and I don't think he's the player we want if Adebayor gets injured. Don't think he'd suit the way we play now, and I'm not sure Bent would want to go back himself.

Can see Newcastle going in for Bent if they have to sell Ba in the transfer window.
