I've started keeping a list of alerts on my iPad of upcoming movies I wanna watch/record on TCM. In case any of these might be of interest to anyone else here, this is what I've got on my list for this month:

the beach party movies are (predictably) dumb. i think i was hoping for more and now i'm kinda wishing todd haynes made some kind of meticulously stylized pastiche version of a beach party movie that secretly explored in melodrama style the tensions undergirding the beach party movie conventions. seriously, tho, are any of these good enough to be worth watching? even the names sound interchangeable.

They Live! and Escape from NY on tnite

They Live is not without its own virtues, but it's mostly worth reading so you can know what's being talked about in Jonathan Lethem's awesome book on the film.

Tourneur's STARS IN MY CROWN is on TONIGHT! It's a sweet gentle dream of a movie, probably better than TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD in any medium.

Much to do, but the minute I start watching Advise and Consent, I'm hooked.

Originally I thought they were airing Late Summer.

This makes a helluva lot more sense as part of a triple feature that includes Little Darlings, though.

Spike Lee as guest programmer on Thursday July 5...Ace In The Hole, Night of the Hunter and On The Waterfront.

Will finally get to see the former. If you haven't, for unfathomable some reason, seen the latter two, cancel any and all plans.

i've seen Ace in the Hole and On the Waterfront - two of my fave films of all time. never saw Night of the Hunter tho.

Can't get too cocky as I've never seen Ace, but seriously...you are not allowed to do anything else til you've seen NotH.

Also, Friday has a run of Jimmy Stewart westerns followed by D'Zullawski's Posession. It's ok/healthy if I don't leave my house for the rest of the week, right?

I've never seen On the Waterfront. The other two are favorites. Saw Ace in the Hole at the Film Forum when it was restored. Bleakest movie ever. Night of the Hunter is a longtime fave and I've seen it many many times.

I watched Sullivan's Travels the other night -- just wonderful. In fact -- this is my secret shame brought to light -- it was the first Sturges film I'd seen.

Also, apparently Veronica Lake was four and a half feet tall.

That's nothing. I am at least that tall.

tried watching 'last summer' last night btw. we got through half and had to turn it off. too disturbing + upsetting!

huh. the very end is the most disturbing + unsettling part btw!

(this all makes it sound like a haneke movie or smething but it in no way is)

i could tell where it was going. it was disturbing from the get-go, and it was clearly getting more so as the movie went on
