So apparently Liverpool are interested in Gomis, and Bent to Liverpool aint happening.

Chris, Friday, 6 January 2012 01:17 (fourteen years ago)

bent to lfc wouldn't have worked anyway tbh, he struggles at a team that holds possession

carpy deems (darraghmac), Friday, 6 January 2012 01:36 (fourteen years ago)

Harry Redknapp has vented his anger at his Spurs players for following the latest Premier League trend of cutting up their socks.

The Tottenham boss is furious that his players continually cut the feet off their socks and use tape to cover up their handiwork.

Redknapp blew his top in the dressing room after getting frustrated at the bizarre practice.

Players are cutting up their socks and, instead, use short tennis ones, with supposedly better traction, to get more of a grip in their hi-tech boots.

That explains why so many Premier League players are now using tape to cover up their secret.

5 CLUES TO DISCOVER IF YOUR CHILD IS A SOCK-CUTTER

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 January 2012 09:09 (fourteen years ago)

I've read that article twice and I still don't understand exactly what players are doing. Are they wearing tennis socks then taping their kit socks on to the top? Why don't they just get the kit people to make their socks as they want them, rather than cobbling socks together?

I also lolled at Arsenal’s Robin van Persie and Aaron Ramsey and Manchester City keeper Joe Hart often have rolls of tape around their socks.

get ready for the banter (NotEnough), Friday, 6 January 2012 09:40 (fourteen years ago)

They're wearing tennis socks, with their modified club socks basically as leg-warmers. Makes practical AND fashion sense imo. Why Redknapp should have blown his top is the real mystery here.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 January 2012 09:48 (fourteen years ago)

taking backhanders from Puma

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 January 2012 09:54 (fourteen years ago)

i'd imagine there's some level of financial consideration for the club, yeah

carpy deems (darraghmac), Friday, 6 January 2012 12:13 (fourteen years ago)

In wearing the foot part of the sock? Top draftsmanship by Puma lawyers if so.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 January 2012 12:15 (fourteen years ago)

This is a bit like Martina Navratilova getting freaked out by this young German kid called Steffi, starting to use the same racket as her (Dunlop Max 200G), but stencilling the Yonex logo on the strings as if she hadn't switched gear.

Michael Jones, Friday, 6 January 2012 12:16 (fourteen years ago)

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard will not join Manchester United according to manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Lampard has been linked with a surprise move to United but Ferguson is not expecting to sign any players in the January transfer window.

He said: "Do you really believe that? There is no foundation to it. We won't get the players that we would like.

"What can you get in January? What do you do? Do you take a second-rate player? No, of course you don't."

Jimmy Riddle Orchestra (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Friday, 6 January 2012 12:26 (fourteen years ago)

if i were organising the legals for my sock to be part of an epl kit, you're feckin right i'd have it that it was the only permitted sock allowed. No point else.

carpy deems (darraghmac), Friday, 6 January 2012 12:28 (fourteen years ago)

Now is Lampard a player he likes who he can't get? Or a second rate player he doesn't want? AVB knows.

pandemic, Friday, 6 January 2012 12:28 (fourteen years ago)

i think the former

Jimmy Riddle Orchestra (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Friday, 6 January 2012 12:39 (fourteen years ago)

It's Fergie so he'll be thinking the former and implying the latter

Tom D (Tom D.), Friday, 6 January 2012 12:44 (fourteen years ago)

I am Newgod (a hoy hoy), Friday, 6 January 2012 13:34 (fourteen years ago)

I know he makes you happy and all, but has anyone checked whether he can still do stuff?

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 January 2012 13:35 (fourteen years ago)

Henry that is, we know Lampard can still take a penalty.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 January 2012 13:36 (fourteen years ago)

henry came back to sell shirts and slap theo around the side of the head, not to play.

I am Newgod (a hoy hoy), Friday, 6 January 2012 13:38 (fourteen years ago)

Remiss to leave yourselves without Gervinho and Arshavin slappers, Arsene needs to get busy.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 January 2012 13:57 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I saw that, how's it wrong? It indicates two passes, one's offside and the other isn't.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 January 2012 13:58 (fourteen years ago)

coin designer otm imo

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 January 2012 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

what's wrong with that coin? if you pass to the left is offside, pass to the right it is not? clear as mud isn't it?

Alan Shearer (ken c), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

haha xpost!

Alan Shearer (ken c), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

Someone got paid for designing that?

Tom D (Tom D.), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

I know right? In the article it's being argued that the player on the left isn't by default offside, only if he touches/accepts the pass, which is true. But you'd need one hell of a huge coin to get all that in. As it stands the coin's ok I think.

I certainly wouldn't have, but hey. (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

the guy stood offside isn't offside if he doesn't take the pass is the argument from some tedious pedant. clearly this is because the current interpretation of offside is really sensible and good.

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:03 (fourteen years ago)

£2 coin might be big enough, you could put the fine print round the edge

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 January 2012 14:03 (fourteen years ago)

Tom D was 'tony hart land', it's just occurred to me

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 January 2012 14:05 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe the other side of the coin says any player in an offside position when the ball is played is no longer automatically penalised. It states: "It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position."

Instead, for the past 17 years assistant referees have been told to wait and see whether a player in an offside position becomes involved in active play, either by "interfering with play, or interfering with an opponent, or by gaining an advantage by being in that position". That means that if the midfielder on the coin passes to the striker on his left, but the striker chooses not to play the ball or interfere with an opponent, he is not offside and play continues.

y'know, in really tiny letters.

I bought a Lilt at lunch time, fwiw.

CraigG, Friday, 6 January 2012 14:05 (fourteen years ago)

Tom D was 'tony hart land', it's just occurred to me

How'd you work that out?

Tom D (Tom D.), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:06 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno, it was bugging me the whole time sandbox was up and it just came in a flash there - I'm not analysing it lest I'm miles out

Ismael Klata, Friday, 6 January 2012 14:07 (fourteen years ago)

put "If a player is not interfering with play or seeking to gain an advantage, then he should be!" around the edge xpost

I was otherwise very normal before I became (onimo), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:08 (fourteen years ago)
