Their low sugar flake cereal is good too, but it took a while to get used to. Can't remember the name but it's obvious from the packaging.

i'm a stan for tj's toasted oatmeal flakes. my wife likes the honey almond & flax 9 whole grain cereal. and our son wolfs down the euro-style yogurt.

I'm pretty fond of the cheap beer at TJ's. right now I think my favorite is the jumping cow amber ale, it's light and fruity without being sweet. and I like the stockyard oatmeal stout too.

dayo, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 01:56 (fourteen years ago)

The Trader Joe's 2011 Vintage Ale is really excellent this year. It's from Unibroue and is very similar to their Maudite or Trois Pistoles but much cheaper.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 02:01 (fourteen years ago)

shit, really? I need to see if we get that here. I suspect we don't get most of their beer selection, for some reason

mh, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 02:02 (fourteen years ago)

The eggnog almonds are great at first but I find I cant eat more than 4 in a sitting or I get a little queasy.

calstars, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 02:07 (fourteen years ago)

you not alone in that! but eggnog almonds are cheaper than regular almonds (!)
what other TJ foods are cheaper with a coating of some sort?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 02:11 (fourteen years ago)

They're cheaper because they're "out of season" and they want to dump them. They sold for $4.99 before Xmas/New Years, I was told.

And junk food that's hard to eat a lot of is the best kind, IMO.

nickn, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 02:26 (fourteen years ago)

i'm this way with dark chocolate -- it's so satisfying in small doses that i never want/need to go overboard with it.

m white btw (get bent), Tuesday, 17 January 2012 04:39 (fourteen years ago)

And i stopped in on the way home today, and both the eggnog almonds and TJ vintage ale is not stocked anymore. The holidays are over. ;_;

nickn, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 04:47 (fourteen years ago)

RIP puff pastry too ;_;

La Lechera, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

joejoes ice cream should be $2 still...

enjoy w/a bit of jam or lemon curd. not at the level of danish pancakes you might find at, say, broder in portland or elsewhere, but imo these are excellent.

omar little, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 08:47 (fourteen years ago)

i'm soaking a bag of their 17 bean and barley mix for tonight. anyone tried it?

sorry but lol

La Lechera, Thursday, 26 January 2012 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

I have made the bean and barley soup a number of times and I'm a fan, though that could just as easily be due to my superior soup making skills as the TJ's product.

If you eat meat, I highly recommend bacon/ham. If not, I suggest kale.

gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Thursday, 26 January 2012 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

Blood oranges back in stock! Oh yeah

bentelec, Thursday, 26 January 2012 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

Oh lol xxp

Aerosol, Thursday, 26 January 2012 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think my TJ's sells dry beans

dayo, Thursday, 26 January 2012 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

Ours sells ones you can dry yourself.

Jeff, Thursday, 26 January 2012 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

I bought a Braeburn apple at TJs, took two bites and found a mealy brown center. Sigh.

Otoh I bought some of the pomegranate limeade and OMG this shit is nectar of the gods

tropical mall lady (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 27 January 2012 13:34 (fourteen years ago)

The produce pretty much sucks at the local TJ's, quality-wise.

mh, Friday, 27 January 2012 13:59 (fourteen years ago)

My tj's started carrying bags of kale finally!

tehresa, Friday, 27 January 2012 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah my experience w produce at TJs has never been great but it seems to be getting better.

ENBB, Friday, 27 January 2012 14:07 (fourteen years ago)

i think if you were in a TJs while they were restocking you would see people throwing apples across the room onto the shelves, it's cool buying salads &c but anything bruisable is always crushed

ps this sounds like i am blaming staff & i'm not, i guess they just don't have good transport or w/e

quick brown fox triangle (schlump), Friday, 27 January 2012 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

It's not even just that, here. The produce is not really damaged, just kind of weak!

mh, Friday, 27 January 2012 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

well you live in a place not easily accessible by ships?

dayo, Friday, 27 January 2012 15:31 (fourteen years ago)

dayo, do you think that the majority of produce in the US is moved by ship?

mh, Friday, 27 January 2012 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

the bagged kale is my jam though. Smoothies all of the days!!!

tropical mall lady (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 27 January 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

in the winter time, yes! xp

dayo, Friday, 27 January 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

or maybe you don't live close to a good railline

dayo, Friday, 27 January 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

Um I think it's all trucked tbh.

Also, does most produce travel by ocean or by air? I've always assumed air for anything perishable because sea takes...a long time.

one little aioli (Laurel), Friday, 27 January 2012 15:55 (fourteen years ago)

pretty sure produce from south america travels by ship

dayo, Friday, 27 January 2012 15:55 (fourteen years ago)

I mean it's trucked within the country and airfreighted from other countries to here.

one little aioli (Laurel), Friday, 27 January 2012 15:55 (fourteen years ago)

it's very expensive to airfreight

dayo, Friday, 27 January 2012 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

Strangely enough, I've noticed that. But ocean from Asia is like 4 weeks, plus another week to cross the USA by rail or truck, and what can keep for 4-6 weeks in a shipping container? Maybe I don't understand this kind of agriculture.

one little aioli (Laurel), Friday, 27 January 2012 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

some kinds of produce don't start going bad the minute it's picked

dayo, Friday, 27 January 2012 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

When I lived in Texas I used to watch banana containers unloaded from ships in the port; lots of bananas would fall into the water and bob around.

quincie, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

I already miss the puff pastry.

La Lechera, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:09 (fourteen years ago)

If we thought daily about how long ago things were actually picked we'd cry

mh, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

apples don't go bad for like, a year

dayo, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

frozen vegetables are actually fresher!

tehresa, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

and, as a documentary I saw showed, juices from concentrate probably end up with more actual juice content (and definitely more fresh-frozen juice content)

mh, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

Laurel, did you ever read "East of Eden"?

sarahell, Friday, 27 January 2012 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

the containers are often refrigerated
