He's Romeu-like I think, bigger though. Bielsa's turned him into a central defender this season.

boxall, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

McClean is another one we've stolen from the Nordies but have yet to cap

Number None, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 23:49 (fourteen years ago)

javi m is more expansive, on a good day he can look like effenberg, probably not going to be a defender at his next club

romeu is a thoroughbred defensive midfielder

spain could field an ~english~ second xi better than england

jhøshea nrq (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 23:50 (fourteen years ago)

Tioté is very much the type of Roy Keane midfield enforcer Ferguson could desperately do with and there was little the outstanding he – along with Ba the key performer in an excellent home display – enjoyed more than dispossessing United's leading scorer.

the outstanding he - toh?

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez's mum has launched a passionate defence of her son in the wake of the Patrice Evra racism row.

united were rank awful last night. just nothing going through the middle, easily dealt with. it's a credit to ferguson that he manages to make such a shower punch above their weight.

rooney couldn't have fed the haters any more easily, one amazingly typical moment where he was flailing around at left back with about 20 mins to go.

also it hasn't been said enough, what the absolute fuck was phil brown trying to do? he went for a ball he shouldn't have gone for and then failed to head it and it hit his knee.

since i just noticed we're back, let me add that i also thought liverpool were quite good against city the other night, scoreline didn't reflect the performance.

but then liverpool are almost always good against the big sides now, that's not really the problem.

phil jones, not phil brown.

but it also hasn't been said enough, wtf was phil brown trying to do?

When a German communicates, you listen (LocalGarda), Thursday, 5 January 2012 09:39 (fourteen years ago)

oh and finally, has anyone dealt with ferguson's utterly mad "cleverly, the best midfielder in the country" shit yet?

Budweiser has signed up football managers Sam Allardyce and Ian Holloway to star in radio ads highlighting its sponsorship of the FA Cup, which reaches its third round this weekend.

The 30- and 60-second radio ads have been created by Anomaly London and feature the West Ham United manager Allardyce and Blackpool manager Holloway giving their own rousing team talks.

They stress the importance of a great atmosphere, team spirit and support of the crowd, before listeners realise the managers are talking about preparations for a good night out after they chant: "Grab some buds".

The ads will run throughout The FA Cup third, fourth and fifth rounds. The FA Cup fifth-round ad will feature another British manager to be confirmed later in the season.

Iain Newell, Western European marketing director at Budweiser, said: "As lead partner of The FA Cup, Budweiser is committed to promoting this iconic tournament like never before.

"What better way to demonstrate this than by recruiting some of the biggest voices in UK football to front this radio campaign? These men perfectly sum up what it means to be part of and lead a team, and the adverts create a real sense of the anticipation of good times."

this is madness

Number None, Thursday, 5 January 2012 11:47 (fourteen years ago)

not really, they dominated possession, they just were poor at using it to create chances. in the first half they played quite good football. 3-0 flattered city at any rate.

When a German communicates, you listen (LocalGarda), Thursday, 5 January 2012 12:00 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, City were quite happy to let them dominate possession as there wasn't a hope in hell they were going to score. Liverpool had no plan beyond lumping it to Carroll and I lost count of how many of their crosses hit the first man. Can't remember them creating much beyond a tame enough Adam (who was beyond awful) free-kick.

Number None, Thursday, 5 January 2012 12:10 (fourteen years ago)

6-1 flattered city too but they're still going to walk it, aren't they?

Alan Shearer (ken c), Thursday, 5 January 2012 12:26 (fourteen years ago)

i thought liverpool were very good in spells too. They just lacked the final ball.

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Thursday, 5 January 2012 12:39 (fourteen years ago)

possession is the most mendacious stat in the game, it's about how u use the ball. a lot of world class teams will let the opposition have as much possession as they want in non-dangerous areas.

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 12:47 (fourteen years ago)

not if they're actively first to all the 50/50s. city played a v dangerous game and were giving it away constantly, yes they defended well but no good team sits back with that amount of carelessness. the fact liverpool weren't good enough to punish them doesn't exonerate them. possibly just a lack of confidence based on some bad results but that was like trapp or benitez style once they went two up.

When a German communicates, you listen (LocalGarda), Thursday, 5 January 2012 12:50 (fourteen years ago)

well i'm not thinking specifically of Liverpool in that match tbh, i've seen too many Wolves games (and others) where somebody says we played well cos we knocked the ball about in the middle of the pitch all day and had 1 shot on target.

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 12:53 (fourteen years ago)

fuck the pundits' attitude to the resurrection of St Gerrard btw but i think there's something to the idea that he's the only Liverpool midfielder who's realised that Carroll will only be any use if he gets early crosses to his head.

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 12:55 (fourteen years ago)

Carroll plaintively entreating his team-mates to "whip it in" in the centre circle before the kick-off was a rather pathetic sight.

Number None, Thursday, 5 January 2012 12:58 (fourteen years ago)

he's rubbish with his feet for a big man

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:10 (fourteen years ago)

mourinho's inter vs barca was the apex of 'possession is for wankers' tactical approach imo

carpy deems (darraghmac), Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:29 (fourteen years ago)

as a rule i like possession football better than counter-attacking, but the bare percentages in the match stats tell you very little

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2012 13:31 (fourteen years ago)

Andy Carroll's woes at Liverpool continued with a poor display in the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, but statistically he is at the club that suits his game the most. Liverpool attempt 30 crosses per match in the Premier League this season, more than any other – Everton are next best on 27 per match, with Manchester United on 26.

While this figure doesn't take into account the position of the cross, nor the quality of the ball played into the box, it's still staggering that Liverpool cross the ball into the box every three minutes. Whatever the reason for Carroll's poor form, it certainly isn't a case of Liverpool not trying to play to his strengths.

doesn't take into acount the lack of support or runs coming into the box either, half the idea of a big man is making life miserable for centre halves so ferrets like bellamy or maxi can pick the loose balls off. None of that at all in the last match.
