do you think whiskies oxidize in the bottle? the george dickel I opened a month ago isn't tasting so great now.
― ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 01:02 (1 minute ago)
not a lot, and not in that timespan
the disaffection is probably more subjective, you ought to ask yourself 'what did this whisky mean to me, and have things changed between us?'
― The Green Path of Hope is formed (nakhchivan), Saturday, 12 November 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)
things have become more bitter in my life, it's true
my other theory - drinking directly from the bottle, my spittle has transmogrified the whiskey

boxall you do not just hate in wild turkey and get away with it.
i feel increasingly like a lone voice in the wilderness but turkey 101 is really, really good!

Hey Krakow, thoughts on your order? Still planning to be round your way at new year. My local booze place is 2 mins away so easy to check what they have.
― ljubljana, Saturday, 12 November 2011 02:06 (fourteen years ago)
You are so not alone. Having a Turkey 101 Manhattan right NOW.

I had a little extra money this week and I bought some 101. It makes the best old fashioneds I've ever made. *hic*

Might make myself one after I finish with this 4Loko. *falls to the floor*

Cold weather is here, so I bought a bottle of Michael's Celtic Irish Cream. I didn't have any ice cubes made yet, so I am starting with some Dalwhinnie. When the ice is ready, I am taking a bath.

Hey ljubljana, that would be really fantastic and very kind of you! Thank you so much!
I would need some inspiration... Maybe another rye, or a high/medium-end bourbon that is not available here in the UK? I'm still in the same kind of <£50~$80 world. Suggestions welcome as always.
I will send you a message just now...

Got it, about to reply. I have not really kept up with this thread, so others should feel free to chip in and offer Krakow inspiration according to his rough criteria above...
― ljubljana, Sunday, 13 November 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)
i had to go through the thread to see what your most recent acquisition was, krakow. what did you think of the russell's reserve rye?
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 13 November 2011 15:43 (fourteen years ago)
I've enjoyed it so far. I've found it to be subtler than the bourbons I know - a different kind of sweetness. It's been a while since I last tried it though, so I will do so again this week...
― only NWOFHM! is real (krakow), Sunday, 13 November 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)
interesting - i always think that ryes are a lot livelier than bourbons.
― tehresa, Sunday, 13 November 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)
so my kitchen has been under renovation for a week now--no counters, no sink, had to move my entire bar to the living room floor. only thing to do is drink cheap-ish whiskey out of the same glass every night. it's been a great time to revisit dickel #12 which is still so great, so unknown, so underappreciated.

Just picked up bottles of Willett 18-year "No Chemists Allowed", Ardbeg Uigeadail, Old Pulteney 17, and replenished my stores of Eagle Rare 10, Rittenhouse 100 proof, and Jameson. Oh lovely whiskey day!
― spiced with KNOWING THAT YOU'VE PAID YOUR BILLS (I DIED), Friday, 6 January 2012 21:44 (fourteen years ago)
In typical Willett uncut/unfiltered bottling fashion where they get stronger as they age and bottle them that way, the Willett 18 is 142.4 proof. Crazy. Always easier to add water than to take it away though.
― spiced with KNOWING THAT YOU'VE PAID YOUR BILLS (I DIED), Friday, 6 January 2012 21:46 (fourteen years ago)
let me know how that willett is! i just heard about the bottling and am pretty interested.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 6 January 2012 21:53 (fourteen years ago)
hmmmm further research indicates that it may be a DC-specific bottling?
― call all destroyer, Friday, 6 January 2012 21:56 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah there's a distributor here that buys casks and does each as a bottling, so they only yield 100-150 bottles of each series. Mostly they go to bars in the area but a few go retail.
― spiced with KNOWING THAT YOU'VE PAID YOUR BILLS (I DIED), Friday, 6 January 2012 22:03 (fourteen years ago)
that's fantastic--really wish someone around here would select some willett/kbd barrels like that.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 6 January 2012 22:07 (fourteen years ago)
my dad bought us a big jug of Bulleit bourbon over the holidays. Definitely more spicy than the Buffalo Trace I had been enjoying, but still good.
― Moodles, Friday, 6 January 2012 22:11 (fourteen years ago)
lately drinking rowan's creek and old overholt. when i can't find rittenhouse around for cheap, overholt is my next go-go whiskey for everyday drinking. also got a bottle of elmer t. lee for my birthday from co-workers but that did not last long.
― one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 6 January 2012 22:15 (fourteen years ago)
The fact that Old Overholt is generally available for $11-13 a bottle (around here at least) is a godsend that means people have no excuse not to drink well.
― spiced with KNOWING THAT YOU'VE PAID YOUR BILLS (I DIED), Saturday, 7 January 2012 08:03 (fourteen years ago)
there was a (previously opened) bottle of old overholt from 1935 at my grandfather's house. we all sampled it. held up pretty well!
― tehresa, Monday, 9 January 2012 15:09 (fourteen years ago)
I rarely make mixed drinks at home, but last night I enjoyed a rye + grapefruit soda.
― Bon Ivoj (jaymc), Monday, 9 January 2012 15:11 (fourteen years ago)
I went to a wheat whiskey tasting flight during the sandbox and actually took notes cuz of this thread, but all I remember now is that Spokane's Dry Fly Wheat was surprisingly delicious, light and a bit sweet.
― sleeve, Monday, 9 January 2012 15:19 (fourteen years ago)
I can just imagine all my Kentucky friends wrinkling their noses and saying "that ain't whiskey"
― sleeve, Monday, 9 January 2012 15:20 (fourteen years ago)
they only had weller 7 year and weller 'antique reserve' at the place I went to, so I got the natique reserve

also panicked when I thought i couldn't locate george dickel on the shelf, spotted it just as I walked out *phew*
― bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 23:02 (fourteen years ago)
i think the antique is also 7 yrs fwiw
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 23:05 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, but it's antique
j/k I didn't recognize anything else, it was between that and the four roses (which I've had before).
is sazerac any good?
― bob loblaw people (dayo), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 23:07 (fourteen years ago)
both of those wellers are great! only diff between the two for now is the proof i think.
sazerac is.....not my favorite but lots of people like it and it's certainly worth trying.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 23:18 (fourteen years ago)
Picked up a bottle of Buffalo Trace for when I run out of Knob Creek and/or the Old Weller 107 I have lined up. But frankly I'm confused these days by how many of these whiskeys come from the same place. Like, Buffalo Trace alone produces some 15 or so, from Sazerac to WL Weller.

went to the liquor store nearest my house yesterday and their whiskey section was ridiculous, but not in a good way!
they had:Evan WilliamsOld WilliamsburgRedemption Rye (this is what I got)and some low, low level scotch called SOMEthing like "Scottish Warrior" or "Highland Rebel" or something. i think it was $11/750ml..
AND THAT'S IT.

$9.15 at Montgomery County liquor stores. Which ALMOST reconciles me to MoCo's and Maryland's liquor distribution laws.
($8.65 for Pikesville Supreme, $20 for Bulleit Rye, $16 for Rittenhouse BiB...if it hasn't all sold out.)

ian, let us know how you like the redemption! i am very fond of it.
― tehresa, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 02:51 (fourteen years ago)
I like Redemption too. I'll take Overholt over Pikesville any day. Last weekend I had Hudson Rye which maybe has been my favorite, next to Hirsch.
― JacobSanders, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 03:01 (fourteen years ago)
But I can't bring myself to pay $50 for this small bottlehttp://tuthilltown.com/wp-content/products/man-rye-whsk-300x300.jpg
― JacobSanders, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 03:07 (fourteen years ago)
yeah it's a decent young rye but the price is stupid
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 03:08 (fourteen years ago)
Even at the bar it was $18 dollars for a shot and a half with one big cube of ice.
― JacobSanders, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 03:14 (fourteen years ago)
i've always wanted to try it but also can't bear paying for it.
― tehresa, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 03:39 (fourteen years ago)
they need to do the 375ml bottles because at $100 for a 750 people would realize they can get much better ryes at the same or lower price.
― spiced with KNOWING THAT YOU'VE PAID YOUR BILLS (I DIED), Wednesday, 11 January 2012 05:34 (fourteen years ago)
You're paying for the bottle shape w/ those. I don't think any of them are that hot.
