Alienist is an obsolete term for a psychiatrist or psychologist. It was given renewed attention when used in the title of the 1994 novel The Alienist by Caleb Carr.

Although currently not often used, the term "alienist" is still used in psychiatric hospitals to describe those mental health professionals who evaluate defendants to determine their competency to stand trial. The term first arose in the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries to describe individuals who aided law enforcement in trying to find serial killers.[citation needed] It is believed the term alienist was used because serial killers were considered somewhat alienated from their emotions. haha. re: the uncanny x-men: a friend and i saw them at the sydney entertainment centre and decided, since our seats were right at the side of the stage we were going to run up there and make out with brian mannix centre stage. anyway, we ran down the stairs, my friend jumped over the barrier first and, before i could make the jump, i saw bouncers swarm on her. i pulled a total homer simpson and backed away slowly leaving her to her fate. im such a great friend!
