Why will television people call it that? I know they will, are they contractually obliged to or something? Also, I bet they don't keep saying 'as we have to call it these days', like you still get with linesmen fifteen years later.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 November 2011 12:48 (fourteen years ago)

It's the Sports Direct Arena stu, call it by it's real name.

get ready for the banter (NotEnough), Thursday, 10 November 2011 12:57 (fourteen years ago)

Pretty certain they're required to call it that, Ismael.

Will always be NAMING RIGHTS to me.

James Mitchell, Thursday, 10 November 2011 13:30 (fourteen years ago)

meh, ashley has done a fucking awesome job and if he wants to rename a stadium every non-televised person in the land is still going to call st. james, who gives a fuck? many people talked about the etihad stadium recently?

people talk about the emirates a lot though. it depends on the name i think. or maybe that's because arsenal fans aren't real fans.

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Thursday, 10 November 2011 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

but the Emirates has always been called that

Number None, Thursday, 10 November 2011 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

the emirates has always been the emirates tho, I think? Must admit that I thought when they first moved that people would just refer to it as 'ashburton grove' this doesn't seem to have happened.
xp

pandemic, Thursday, 10 November 2011 14:49 (fourteen years ago)

that's true enough. what do folks call etihad now? is it city of manchester stadium? eastlands?

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Thursday, 10 November 2011 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

iirc John Henry made the point that you can only do it with a new stadium - nobody would ever stop calling it Anfield

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 November 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

Most people seem to call the new Lansdowne Road stadium the Aviva although they did totally demolish the old one.

Number None, Thursday, 10 November 2011 14:57 (fourteen years ago)

meh, ashley has done a fucking awesome job

If the whole of English football ends at this exact point in time then yes.

Matt DC, Thursday, 10 November 2011 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah it is because it is a new stadium that Emirates works. 'Etihad' is only 10 years old or whatever but in conversation it is still just Eastlands.

GOIT BUZZ TOYS (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 10 November 2011 15:00 (fourteen years ago)

tbf that's a sentiment I'm not entirely opposed to

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 November 2011 15:00 (fourteen years ago)

Well, he learnt from his lessons. Hiring Shearer obv was stupid as shit, whereas getting £35m for overrated and bad tempered local boy and replacing him for free with one of the best strikers in the country = good.

GOIT BUZZ TOYS (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 10 November 2011 15:03 (fourteen years ago)

In fairness everyone was saying at the time that sacking Houghton and replacing him with Pardew was completely cretinous. I'm still not convinced that everything that's happening at Newcastle isn't taking even Ashley and Pardew by surprise. This just doesn't have the feel of having happened by design, and might yet fuck up.

Getting £30m or whatever for Carroll does look like incredible business however.

Matt DC, Thursday, 10 November 2011 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

Also you know that Ashley is dropping this particular bomb now because he thinks the fans will be so overjoyed at sitting third in the Premiership that they'll be less likely to tear of their shirts and stand outside St James's Park baying for his blood.

Matt DC, Thursday, 10 November 2011 15:10 (fourteen years ago)

Also you know that Ashley is dropping this particular bomb every now and then because he thinks the fans will be so overjoyed at sitting third in the Premiership that they'll be less likely to tear of their shirts and stand outside St James's Park baying for his blood. then buy a new shirt each from sportsdirect.com

fixed

True Newcastle fans will never bow to the tyranny of the shirt-wearers

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Thursday, 10 November 2011 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

hiring shearer was amazing long-game strategy imo, that was a step to be o'erleapt or else forever failed

₪_₪ (darraghmac), Thursday, 10 November 2011 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

Also, I bet they don't keep saying 'as we have to call it these days', like you still get with linesmen fifteen years later.

Think you might have misunderstood - 'linesmen' were officially renamed 'referee's assistants as we have to call them these days'.

₪_₪ (darraghmac), Thursday, 10 November 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

Right, let's sign one. How can we go about this? Tap up someone from another board?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 November 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

rename ILF to ILF @ sportsdirect.com

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Thursday, 10 November 2011 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

We have to wait for the transfer window to open again.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 10 November 2011 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

Come to this board, my children.

Alan Shearer (ken c), Thursday, 10 November 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)

"sportsdirect.com@I Love Football" would be the proper syntax.

James Mitchell, Thursday, 10 November 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)

I bet Mike Ashley never gets any email.

James Mitchell, Thursday, 10 November 2011 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

I've had a soft spot for them for much of the Premiership era but it's been soured in recent times and my heart's not in making a proper go of supporting them.

We could try constructing an optimal searchable thread title to lure in a suitable googler? What would it be? It'd have to be the right type of fan.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 November 2011 18:09 (fourteen years ago)

thx for that onimo. I loved Tino. Him arriving at Newcastle to sign in a blizzard with a massive fur coat on will always be my favourite transfer window moment (other than selling torres for £50m obvs)

For an international message board ILF fandom is definitely concentrated among a few teams, to the extent that Villa, the most successful club in the second biggest city in Britain, have one fan. See also the delight at a Norwich fan popping up. Imagine how great a passionate Stoke or Blackburn fan would be.

*Condescending pat on head*

Matt DC, Thursday, 10 November 2011 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

Need more Utd fans imo

Number None, Thursday, 10 November 2011 21:58 (fourteen years ago)

I mean sometimes I feel like I'm the only person around here who actually likes Wayne Rooney

Number None, Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

No. It's bad enough that yourself and NBS have softened my hatred of Man Utd, don't want to take the chance any more posters could lead me to a grudging admiration for that club.
xp

I believe EZ Snappin is a Villa fan.

Unless he was the one you were thinking of, in which case fuck off London-centric media conspiracy have you won the european cup wahhh

MPx4A, Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

It's a fairytale for the Villa and Norwich fans, getting to post on the same board as Matt, pandemic, etc.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 10 November 2011 22:21 (fourteen years ago)
