amateurist asked: "any other recommendations for stuff w/in an hour or two of knoxville? music? sights? etc.?"

If you're still in TN this Thursday (Jan. 8), the amazing Shelley Hirsch will be playing a show in Chattanooga (an hour and a half drive from Knoxville). (If you make it, say hello - I'm playing in a duo that's opening the show.)

in chattanooga?! whoa. i'm out of the area on tuesday, sadly.

harvest records in asheville is amazing. EVERYBODY in the area should visit.

does anyone know anything about basement records on chapman hwy in knoxville? we passed it driving, and i was curious, but there is no info at all online (save for the address) so i wonder if it's just crap.

amateurist, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 04:28 (seventeen years ago)

it's fucking weird

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 09:03 (seventeen years ago)

Whatever happened to all the vinyl in those Ernest Tubb stores? I weep.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 09:26 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man, who even knows.

Seriously, AM, you might find somthing you want in Basement but it's honestly not worth the trouble. It's horribly disorganized and what organization it DOES have is for the o_O files: "Black Music" is a category there, I crap you negative.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

There used to be a fantastic used vinyl store in the same shopping center as Cat's on Kingston Pike but I dunno what happened to it. I got the Human League Fascination 12" and Bill Withers and a red Michael Jackson Thriller 7" there.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 10:11 (seventeen years ago)

amateurist asking questions about Chapman Highway is kind of wild.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 10:11 (seventeen years ago)

the g.f. is taking me to chik-fila-a tomorrow.

amateurist, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 11:40 (seventeen years ago)

i was unimpressed by the big record store (forgot the name) on chapman. lost and found records had some good country vinyl, otherwise not so great. knoxville is a bad records town. i did have a nice time at the pilot light.

amateurist, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 11:41 (seventeen years ago)

Disc Exchange, probably. Yeah it's hit and miss for sure.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 11:57 (seventeen years ago)

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 11:58 (seventeen years ago)

No way, I want one. Mail me it?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 12:00 (seventeen years ago)

i went to king tut's. i wasn't super into the guy's schtick, but the food was fine. i was pretty peeved by the bill though-- $38 (incl. tax) for a greek salad and the sampler. rip off.

amateurist, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 04:09 (seventeen years ago)

i love mo's shtick. but it's true the place is partly performance, so you have to be in the mood for it.

Aren't the bricks so RED on that building?

roxymuzak, Sunday, 18 January 2009 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

Is that the former Miller's department store?

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 18 January 2009 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

I can't speak for Doc Cas but I believe it is. Also: MOD BURGER!

roxymuzak, Sunday, 18 January 2009 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

According to this it was a Rich's:

http://www.swankpad.org/places/knoxvilletan/richs/richs.htm

...but I imagine it's worn a few hats. And yes, fabulously red bricks! I'm a sucker for saturated-color glazed bricks, as a rule.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 18 January 2009 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

Your link reminds me that I love the Medical Arts Building -- it is one of my fasvorite buildings in the world.

roxymuzak, Sunday, 18 January 2009 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

Big haws re: Tracer's headline, and HUGE HAWS that we made it onto that list and the Royal Bangs didn't! Exactly zero bands I voted for made it.

roxymuzak, Thursday, 29 January 2009 06:55 (seventeen years ago)

i declined to vote because wtf do i know. i like most of the people on the list, but also some who arent and anyway i probably would have put the everly brothers #1...

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 29 January 2009 08:08 (seventeen years ago)
