Depends, but I have several things I can wear.

I'll go with shorts, short sleeve shirt, arm warmers and calf sleeves for quite a while. It has to get down to at least the low 40s for me to ditch that. Or high 40s and wind/rain. I may also just wear a long sleeve tech shirt instead of the arm warmers, but I don't do that too often because it makes me look dumpy while I run. Also wear light gloves. My hands seem to get colder than anything else first.

25 to 35 degrees I'll put on a wind breaker jacket and break out the tights and compression top. I still wear shorts over the tights and a short sleeve tech shirt over the compression top if I'm not wearing a jacket. Me running down the street is just compression clothing is nothing I want anyone to see. Light to heavy gloves and I'll have a hat with ear coverage on.

Below 25, I'll just add more layers. Two pairs of socks. A thicker zip up top under my jacket. Hot pockets/hand warmers in my gloves. I have a ski mask thing that covers up everything on my head except my eyes.

I've never run in single digits. In fact, since I've been tracking temp during my runs, this is the breakdown since November 2009 of everything below 45 degrees:

10 - 14: 1 run
15 - 19: 4 runs
20 - 24: 10 runs
25 - 29: 11 runs
30 - 34: 14 runs
35 - 39: 10 runs
40 - 45: 13 runs

I ran in single digits a bunch last winter, just wore thermals sweats hat n gloves nbd, I'm sort of awesome

ice cr?m, Monday, 7 November 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

v impressive, mr modesty

30-45 is my favorite temp to run in, for sure -- cold enough to make me keep going and feels v refreshing after maybe 10 min of being moderately cold

Yasmine Teeth (La Lechera), Monday, 7 November 2011 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

Look at the full temperature spectrum, my favorite range to run in is 70 to 74, with 25 runs over the last 2 years.

Jeff, Monday, 7 November 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

I prob like the 40s and 50s best, the only thing I really can't abide by is midday summer sun beating down on me

ice cr?m, Monday, 7 November 2011 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

Here's my whole chart:

"I ran in single digits a bunch last winter,"

you are ice cream though.

Lol

ice cr?m, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i ran one day last year when the canal i run by was frozen over. i never wear a hat tbh, would you all not be sweating ridiculously with a hat on? i have considered something that just covers my ears. also my hands don't get cold enough to need gloves, tho i think i may have worn a pair sometimes.

i would go with, tights plus shorts (la lechera otm, you look indecent if you don't wear shorts over tights), a t-shirt, thermal long sleeve running thing, and a light windbreaker jacket.

When a German communicates, you listen (LocalGarda), Monday, 7 November 2011 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

Hat is mainly for the ears. Having frozen ears sucks.

Jeff, Monday, 7 November 2011 23:05 (fourteen years ago)

i have this little fleece ear warmer thingie that i wear most of the time instead of a hat
i just remembered that

Yasmine Teeth (La Lechera), Monday, 7 November 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

localgarda and i are running dopplegangers. i used to run with a beanie on and it would just start sort of chafing with how wet it got, and considering i only own about two of them and run on a daily basis the thought of it drying off and then re-wearing it wasn't coping well with consciousness of my hair smell

i also run by a canal, which is nice as shit when the ducks are around.

also my hands don't get cold, just dry

i love u

buffs are awesome for ear coverage without the sweat-inducing heaviness of hats or caps.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 7 November 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

It never gets really cold here so I can usually avoid running at below-freezing temperatures and if there's serious snow/ice out I just take a few days off until it goes away. So I'm not really qualified to talk about cold-weather gear but if it's around freezing I'll wear two tech t-shirts and leggings. It tends to be my feet that feel the cold the most but they do warm up after a couple of miles. Can't imagine I'd get along with headgear of any sort.

fun drive (seandalai), Monday, 7 November 2011 23:44 (fourteen years ago)

Running my second beer mile this upcoming Saturday. Hope to PR.

Jeff, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 14:49 (fourteen years ago)

lol cheers!

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

i had an amazing experience running on the beach barefoot the other day, i really felt like i could feel my form and work w/it so much easier just via the fact that my foot was like hitting the ground, so im gonna give this barefoot running craze a try

bought these units the saucony hattori yesterday, lol aqua sox, tried on the new balance minmus trail but they were too narrow, its weird nb doesnt make widths in those, anyway havent run in them yet, will report back

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 15:10 (fourteen years ago)

these i guess are more barefooty than the new balance anyway as they have zero heel to toe drop

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 15:13 (fourteen years ago)

I have a friend who likes the Hattori's a lot. Not enough shoe for me.

I've been trying out some Altra Instincts. Didn't work out, my orthotics don't fit into them and when I run with just the sock liner, I have arch pain. Plus I've been running in Newtons so long, anything else just feels like I am wearing pizza boxes on my feet.

Jeff, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

Uhh fuck my knees. I've got a half marathon in three weeks, but it seems pointless to train cos if I run more than 10k regularly (every third day, say) my knees just go to shit. My shoes can't be helping, they're over 2 years old and completely gone, but I haven't got the money atm for new ones. I guess I'll just stick to 5 milers for a while.

Vasco da Gama, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 15:58 (fourteen years ago)

I am curious about Pose running, although I have always tried to avoid heel-striking, but I have no idea how credible this technique is. Or any technique is, really.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 16 November 2011 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

went for the first run in the minimal shoes today, I felt like a lil ninja padding along, it was p awesome

ice cr?m, Thursday, 17 November 2011 22:29 (fourteen years ago)

Feel p good today, I only ran a few miles as advised when starting on these revolutionary new kind of shoes, my Achilles feels a lil sore which prob makes sense as my heel isusually all raised up relative to my toes, tho I do wear vans often when not runjning which are totally flat maybe that helps idk

ice cr?m, Friday, 18 November 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

Beer mile in about 9 minutes. I screwed up my timing though, waiting for official results. Would be about a 2.5 min PR.

Jeff, Saturday, 19 November 2011 23:55 (fourteen years ago)

one month passes...

The Renaissance Mile (1 mile, solve a Rubik's cube, drink a 40oz of malt liquor, dunk a basketball on a 10' rim, play Chopin's Minute Waltz, eat a pint of ice cream, any order)
Best known effort: rumored to be 29:09

your pain is probably equal (Z S), Monday, 2 January 2012 02:06 (fourteen years ago)

Doable. Except the dunk.

Jeff, Monday, 2 January 2012 02:07 (fourteen years ago)

i could only run the mile, drink the 40, and eat the ice cream. evidently, i am not a renaissance man.

your pain is probably equal (Z S), Monday, 2 January 2012 02:09 (fourteen years ago)

i have been on and off this thread for years now because i do this do a good job/stop pattern all the time. but i have gone running for the past 3 days and i'm going today! then i can't go tues or weds because of work obligations and dark. it's all because of the 10k runner iphone app and mapmyrun app! kinda lame to carry my phone running but it truly helps.

tunnel joe (harbl), Monday, 2 January 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

Four miles today. First snowy run of the season, but just a little slick. I realized the other day that I pretty much have no goals for this year, which is very unlike me.

Jeff, Monday, 2 January 2012 22:22 (fourteen years ago)

Persuaded a couple of local friends to head out on this incredibly windy morning. It was mildly scary, but good to have done.

only NWOFHM! is real (krakow), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 09:53 (fourteen years ago)

May sign up for a 10k trail race. Like a real trail too, with roots, logs, and stuff that will probably trip me.

Jeff, Monday, 9 January 2012 04:08 (fourteen years ago)

Trail races are great, I love them but def not the place to set any sort of blazing pace. Have fun!

I've been doing alot of miles over past 3 months, 20-30 per week which is a ton for me. Feeling fine though; have finally mastered getting up early and starting runs before dawn. Love it. Half-marathon at end of Jan, weather permitting.

tobo73, Monday, 9 January 2012 12:35 (fourteen years ago)

Haven't been running here at there, keeping low mileage as to not get injured, only running 3 times a week.

Friend is doing this race this year: http://thecolorrun.com/chicago/ seems like a bad idea.

Jeff, Tuesday, 17 January 2012 13:00 (fourteen years ago)

Ooof, the trail race was difficult. Running through six inches of fresh snow doesn't work very well for me. I can't wait to run on pavement again. Sweet, sweet pavement.

Jeff, Sunday, 22 January 2012 01:46 (fourteen years ago)

welp just got suited up to run and apropos of nothing it started pouring rain from the sky

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

i am going through a MAJOR running slump. it's kind of awful. maybe i just needed a break or something, but i have had to diversify my energy-spending activities because i couldn't get myself to run 3x a week. so i was not doing anything at all, and that was bad (BAD!) for my mental health.

honestly, i think that exercise-as-mental-health-activity is the biggest motivator i have. physical benefits are great and all, but if i don't move around A LOT i get really crazy.

no one wants that, much less me.

in sum, more dancing, less running.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

yah im mostly in it for the mental health too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

btw dudes re those barefoot running shoes i bought a few months ago i cannot recommend the whole concept highly enough, ive run in them prob less than 10 times on short runs but the effect its had on my form is PRONOUNCED, you can just feel everything so much better, not sure whether im aiming to eventually use them full time or just as a training tool but my lord how fascinating

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

it's funny when you're running at your pace and you pass someone and they pick it up like they're trying to race you.

omar little, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

intense competition

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

you can count on me to not be that person

La Lechera, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

i passed some guy yesterday and he picked it up right away. he ws one of those dudes who runs like it's chariots of fire, all glorious w/an invisible finish line somewhere ahead.

omar little, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

once you pass someone never let them repass otherwise ur pussy

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

hmm it seems to have stopped raining but now im afraid to get caught in a 33 degree downpour what strange weather

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

maybe i will just go on a shorter run than planned idk

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

in the end i broke him

omar little, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

no mercy

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

i was gonna buy shoes & start soon but now i am old enough to have regular back pain, it seems

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

running will maybe help w/yr back pain

lag∞n, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

being a doctor i feel u should know this
