Yorke*

boxall, Friday, 4 November 2011 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

(xxxp) He was great, but only for a couple of years, and there have been lots of great attacking players at United in the last 25 years. If you choose a 'Best XI' for that period then for nearly every position there's going to be someone very good who gets left out. Except goalkeeper, where Schmeichel is about a million miles ahead of the competition.

were cole/yorke playing in the 3-3 at the Nou? Was there a 3-3 at the Nou Camp or have I imagined that?

pandemic, Friday, 4 November 2011 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

I like the way Yorkey occasionally alludes to some insider Utd knowledge during his Sky Sports appearances. Like he just lurks around the training ground and they don't have the heart to tell him to leave

While we're on the Ferguson subject, I like the Duxbury quote in this:

Fuck yeah - that was *the* Cole-Yorke game with *the* Cole-Yorke goal

yorke was great for his last few seasons at villa too

Yorke got a brace in the 3-3 and Cole got the other one

The guy from ZonalMarking has been arguing for Cole-York up front in a Ferguson-era XI, as an actual partnership that worked well, whereas Cantona & Ruud is hypothetical and potentially a disaster.

have we talked about zm

it's a good site and completely admirable but i wouldn't want to read it that often cuz he is duty bound to find some WELL, ACTUALLY bit of sophistry every week

Nigel Farage is a fucking hero (nakhchivan), Friday, 4 November 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

That Ferg-era XI is pretty much OTM. You can't have Cole or Yorke individually so they both have to lose out

Number None, Friday, 4 November 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

That was a great game iirc. Rivaldo was fantastic!!

pandemic, Friday, 4 November 2011 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

xp

pandemic, Friday, 4 November 2011 23:05 (fourteen years ago)

i was pleasantly surprised he chose rvn over he who shall not be mentioned

Just looked up the team sheets from the 1999 Barca/Utd game and Xavi was playing apparently. Have no memory of him at all.

pandemic, Friday, 4 November 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

some WELL, ACTUALLY bit of sophistry every week

I only read the pieces on matches I haven't seen, which tend to be the more obscure ones. Can't say I've noticed this too much. Or are you referring to his FW persona?

boxall, Friday, 4 November 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

that was xavi's breakout season iirc xp

Xavi was covering for injured Guardiola

I saw that game (Barcelona v United 98) 'as live' in a bar in Italy, i.e. they showed the whole match from about 10pm, after they'd shown Inter or Juve or someone actually live. I had no idea what the score had been (as I'd been working, and didn't have a mobile phone or internet access, or know anyone else interested in football, or speak much Italian) so I was jumping around celebrating each time United scored. One guy kept gesturing to me each time - in retrospect I think he was trying to say "don't get carried away - you still end up drawing", but at the time I thought it might mean "English pig - I will kill you." To be fair, there are a *lot* of gestures in Italian and it takes a while to learn them.

boxall -- i was thinking of this week's 'stoke's home form isn't that great' challops on twitter

That Ferg-era XI is pretty much OTM

I'm sure I did my Best XI somewhere on ILX, but it might have been Prem-era rather than Ferg-era. IIRC it was a thread on ILF - I think I started it - for people to choose their Best XIs for their club. I can't find the thread, though, or remember any key words in its name.

Paul Scholes believes Ryan Giggs could be the man to take over from Ferguson. Scholes said: ‘People have talked about Mourinho. It can change very quickly — it’s about who is successful at the time. I doesn’t matter if they are British or foreign, you just want the best man for the job. I could see Ryan Giggs becoming manager.’

Nigel Farage is a fucking hero (nakhchivan), Friday, 4 November 2011 23:19 (fourteen years ago)

so was it much different? I'd probably try to find a way to shoehorn Beckham in there. For free-kicks alone xpost

Number None, Friday, 4 November 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

I can't remember. I think I did two versions because someone complained about my original formation or something. Must find thread....

Mister Potato shares Manchester United’s commitment to (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 4 November 2011 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

Found it in the sandbox:

I can't? He got 40-odd goals the other season. How about 4-2-3-1:

Keane
Ince

Giggs
Cantona
Ronaldo

RVN

This means no Beckham, but maybe I can live with that better than leaving out Cantona.

A club-by-club best XI during the Premier League era

boxall, Friday, 4 November 2011 23:22 (fourteen years ago)

Can't live with no Cantona

Number None, Friday, 4 November 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

rooney rvn cron
veron
scholes keane
irwin vidic stam parker
carroll

Nigel Farage is a fucking hero (nakhchivan), Friday, 4 November 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

(xp) Cheers! So my first version was:

Schmeichel (there's not really any doubt about this one)

Evra (though a lot of people would go for Irwin)
Vidic
Ferdinand (this has probably been the best partnership, though probably one of them should be replaced by Stam)
G Neville

Giggs
Keane (again, I don't think anyone would question this one)
Scholes (ahead of Ince who might be too similar to Keane)
Beckham (for the crosses and combination with G Nev down the right)

Ronaldo
Van Nistelrooy

Sorry Eric!

Best thing is you have Solskjaer on the bench of any Utd dream team

rooney ffs

blind pele (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 November 2011 02:20 (fourteen years ago)

in that formation, fortune bellion and blomquist ahead of him

blind pele (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 November 2011 02:21 (fourteen years ago)

Peter
Rooney Staam Pallister Irwin
Fletcher
Robson Veron
Cronaldo Konchelskis
Cantona

imo.

a hoy hoy, Saturday, 5 November 2011 07:47 (fourteen years ago)

Kanchelskis played on the right and Pallister wasn't that good

Mister Potato shares Manchester United’s commitment to (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 5 November 2011 08:41 (fourteen years ago)

you seem to have put fletcher in there fyi.

blind pele (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 November 2011 10:09 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah the Fletcher inclusion is a maverick decision to say the least. There's this guy called Roy Keane...

Number None, Saturday, 5 November 2011 11:23 (fourteen years ago)

And Veron may have been a fucking great player but he had about five good games for Utd

Number None, Saturday, 5 November 2011 11:24 (fourteen years ago)

was gonna mention that. no Keane is world class challopery tbf

Bond 23: Skyrim (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 5 November 2011 11:24 (fourteen years ago)

In the most recent batch of newspaper/celeb best-of-prems (can't remember what prompted them, 19th anniversary of the brave new era or somesuch) Keane was nowhere to be found. He'd be my top guy I think.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 5 November 2011 11:26 (fourteen years ago)

Keane or Schmeichel 1st and 2nd, Cron and possibly Cantona 3rd or 4th

Bond 23: Skyrim (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 5 November 2011 11:27 (fourteen years ago)

right, think i've done this but

Schmeichel

Neville Stam Ferdinand Irwin

Beckham Keane Scholes Ronaldo

Cantona Van Nistelrooy

blind pele (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 November 2011 11:27 (fourteen years ago)

as individuals, like

if you were under onus to put the into a working team then i'd prob just go with the first choice xi in 99

blind pele (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 November 2011 11:29 (fourteen years ago)

looks about right, maybe push Cron forward into a 4-3-3ish shape

Bond 23: Skyrim (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 5 November 2011 11:29 (fourteen years ago)

cron cantona would p much go where they wanted tbf- not sure they'd work together (or even rvn with cantona) irl

blind pele (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 November 2011 11:33 (fourteen years ago)

we've all done our 90's or prem-era teams tho, right

blind pele (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 November 2011 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

eh

Carr King Campbell Bale shut up

Fuck knows

Anderton Modric Ginola

Van der Vaart
Sheringham

blind pele (darraghmac), Saturday, 5 November 2011 11:39 (fourteen years ago)

Team would get through about two games before losing half its players
