if you think of the paintball episode as a 'call of duty' homage that might explain any problems you have with the show

Mordy, Friday, 4 November 2011 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

Call of Duty is def turgid

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 November 2011 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

I was basically in love with this from the episode when Pierce joins the band.

Matt DC, Friday, 4 November 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

I was down from the first episode when Annie says "we should talk to Jeff about his tardiness" & Pierce says "don't use that word around Abed" :D

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 November 2011 16:39 (fourteen years ago)

i'm kind of glad about the lack of oliver so far- it means there is going to be a whole psych episode w/ britta and him.

yeah this is def not just an american thing, tho it is a meta thing like the best simpsons but live action. also you know we once had a thread about musicians actively enjoy what they are doing and how that makes you enjoy their music so much more? that is the sort of vibe i get from community and p&r

a hoy hoy, Friday, 4 November 2011 17:15 (fourteen years ago)

Thats pretty otm re: the vibe of those shows. I also think thats what is missing from The Office now as well. Back in the peaks of seasons 2 and 3 I got that vibe, but its long gone from that show.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 4 November 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

Oliver only usually turns up in half a season anyway, so it's likely we just won't see him at all til after Christmas.

Matt DC, Friday, 4 November 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

OTM a hoy hoy seconded.

I ignored this show until the first Christmas episode. They had me at "Say the whole word!" "...Jewey?"

In fairness, the patinball episode is called "Modern Warfare"

encarta it (Gukbe), Friday, 4 November 2011 17:35 (fourteen years ago)

true, i had forgotten about that

Mordy, Friday, 4 November 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)

there's just nothing that screams CoD about that ep to me. make more sense to call it that Warriors ep of Community

Mordy, Friday, 4 November 2011 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

Things that made me lol for too long this episode:
Room temp room
Astronaut paninis
IVORY HAIR

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 November 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

This was probably the first episode of the season that I loved immediately and without reservation. I mentioned last week that I tend to compare the non-concept episodes to nude pool from S1, and I definitely think this was in the same vein.

And the John Goodman payoff was amazing! His expression + disbelieving "No!" when Troy tried to turn his argument around on him was brilliant.

warning: simulated vampire fellatio (reddening), Friday, 4 November 2011 20:04 (fourteen years ago)

I loved Troy and Abed's impressions of each other as well, there were so many great moments in this episode.

bouquet beatdown (Nicole), Friday, 4 November 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

The thing I loved about this episode is that I couldn't tell a direct influence of anything and that it seemed so meta that it was just Community down Community's rabbit hole, as opposed to being down 2001's or Die Hard's or whatevers rabbit hole.

Like geuine WTF at the ivory hair. No other show could pull that off as 'normal' as Community did, ever, in the history of tv shows.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 4 November 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i enjoy the parody when it's less specific. like troy's whole plot line was obviously parodic but it was making fun of such a huge trope (the hidden gift that can be used for good or evil) that it wasn't pointing at just one thing.

I wonder if we're going to see Evil Vice Dean try and tempt the study group one by one to the dark side. Also can't work out if there's a conspiracy or if he just loves good air conditioning.

Think what was missed out of yesterday's Inspector Spacetime discussion is that Troy and Abed talking in prissy British accents and throwing paper balls at Jeff is straight-up hilarious.

Matt DC, Saturday, 5 November 2011 08:44 (fourteen years ago)

Also I loved the "hey, one of us" look the gay dude gave Jeff right at the start.

Matt DC, Saturday, 5 November 2011 08:45 (fourteen years ago)

"Whassup girl, how you livin?"
"PEW"

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 5 November 2011 16:37 (fourteen years ago)

This episode was great, the ideal template for a "normal" episode imo

da croupier, Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

If it wasn't for the brief bits of unfunny guard chang I'd almost assume I dreamt the weaker ones this season

da croupier, Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:01 (fourteen years ago)

what a great episode. britta this season has been amazing. i'm going to start calling it the edible complex.

horseshoe, Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

for some reason john goodman delivery of "inbelievable" and "unvincible" killed me.

the only disappointing thing about this episode was basically no annie

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 5 November 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Saturday, 5 November 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, interesting, looking over the episode descriptions for season 1, the Christmas one seems to be the only one I missed. I really liked the show from the beginning though.

(Loved the last ep btw.)

"I'm Troy. I like football, but also... I don't?"

Emile Zola predicts World War I and then he dies. (R Baez), Sunday, 6 November 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

Troy and Abed doing impressions of each other was super-adorable.

Watched the Halloween episode again today and noticed that the Greendale butthole emblem is now on the library doors. I love that they're running with that now.

Matt DC, Sunday, 6 November 2011 20:56 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, the "i like football but also i don't" vs. "what would han solo say? 'keep it together-' I CAN'T DO THIS" was amazing

Finally watched this. Excellent. Enjoyed the lighting and the music work during the A/C scenes.

Also, cool that Jerry Minor is getting more screentime. And Dan Bakkedahl, too!

I hope there's a John Goodman/Michael K Williams clash-up before season's end.

i kind of hate the new 'look' of the show with the brightness in the center of the shot and lots of shadow around the edges of the screen -- i noticed it at first in i think the halloween episode and thought it was just a special look for that episode, but then i saw it this week too
