I was wondering what became of that guy

On the Goals On Sunday programme on 6 September 2009, Breen revealed that he had agreed to move to Inter Milan after the 2002 World Cup, but failed a medical.[6] Breen had also been linked with a move to Barcelona.[7] Breen left Barnet in June 2010.[8]

Wayne Rooney’s record £5million five-book deal with HarperCollins is the subject of much discussion at the publishers, who are considering a revamp of the troubled contract.

The second autobiography in the series has already been postponed once following England’s dismal 2010 World Cup. Plans to bring out the book either before or after Euro 2012 are also on the back burner, with Rooney suspended from the group stage of the tournament.

With football life stories not selling well, there are doubts whether a big enough market exists for at least three more Rooney memoirs.

This has led to talks on how the 12-year contract, signed in 2006, could be re-configured.

HarperCollins, who have new sports book management, are also discussing the most suitable publishing strategy for John Terry’s autobiography, for which a seven-figure advance has been paid.

The book was originally due in the shops after the 2010 World Cup and the current racism allegation will only add to the sensitivity around a publication date.

It is difficult to think of Old Trafford as a place for featureless footballers

Nigel Farage is a fucking hero (nakhchivan), Friday, 4 November 2011 22:47 (fourteen years ago)

im not saying he should be in that team but dwight yorke was awes for a fair few seasons and is seldom mentioned these days even tho THE GREAT OLD ONES OF THE PREMIERSHIPPE are habitually overcommemorated

Nigel Farage is a fucking hero (nakhchivan), Friday, 4 November 2011 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

if it wasnt for his amiably phoned in appearances on sky, nobody would attest to his existence

The guy from ZonalMarking has been arguing for Cole-York up front in a Ferguson-era XI, as an actual partnership that worked well, whereas Cantona & Ruud is hypothetical and potentially a disaster.

boxall, Friday, 4 November 2011 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

Yorke*

boxall, Friday, 4 November 2011 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

(xxxp) He was great, but only for a couple of years, and there have been lots of great attacking players at United in the last 25 years. If you choose a 'Best XI' for that period then for nearly every position there's going to be someone very good who gets left out. Except goalkeeper, where Schmeichel is about a million miles ahead of the competition.

were cole/yorke playing in the 3-3 at the Nou? Was there a 3-3 at the Nou Camp or have I imagined that?

pandemic, Friday, 4 November 2011 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

I like the way Yorkey occasionally alludes to some insider Utd knowledge during his Sky Sports appearances. Like he just lurks around the training ground and they don't have the heart to tell him to leave

While we're on the Ferguson subject, I like the Duxbury quote in this:

have we talked about zm

it's a good site and completely admirable but i wouldn't want to read it that often cuz he is duty bound to find some WELL, ACTUALLY bit of sophistry every week

Nigel Farage is a fucking hero (nakhchivan), Friday, 4 November 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

That Ferg-era XI is pretty much OTM. You can't have Cole or Yorke individually so they both have to lose out

Number None, Friday, 4 November 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

That was a great game iirc. Rivaldo was fantastic!!

Just looked up the team sheets from the 1999 Barca/Utd game and Xavi was playing apparently. Have no memory of him at all.

pandemic, Friday, 4 November 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

some WELL, ACTUALLY bit of sophistry every week

I only read the pieces on matches I haven't seen, which tend to be the more obscure ones. Can't say I've noticed this too much. Or are you referring to his FW persona?

boxall, Friday, 4 November 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

that was xavi's breakout season iirc xp

I saw that game (Barcelona v United 98) 'as live' in a bar in Italy, i.e. they showed the whole match from about 10pm, after they'd shown Inter or Juve or someone actually live. I had no idea what the score had been (as I'd been working, and didn't have a mobile phone or internet access, or know anyone else interested in football, or speak much Italian) so I was jumping around celebrating each time United scored. One guy kept gesturing to me each time - in retrospect I think he was trying to say "don't get carried away - you still end up drawing", but at the time I thought it might mean "English pig - I will kill you." To be fair, there are a *lot* of gestures in Italian and it takes a while to learn them.

That Ferg-era XI is pretty much OTM

I'm sure I did my Best XI somewhere on ILX, but it might have been Prem-era rather than Ferg-era. IIRC it was a thread on ILF - I think I started it - for people to choose their Best XIs for their club. I can't find the thread, though, or remember any key words in its name.

Mister Potato shares Manchester United’s commitment to (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 4 November 2011 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

Paul Scholes believes Ryan Giggs could be the man to take over from Ferguson. Scholes said: ‘People have talked about Mourinho. It can change very quickly — it’s about who is successful at the time. I doesn’t matter if they are British or foreign, you just want the best man for the job. I could see Ryan Giggs becoming manager.’

Nigel Farage is a fucking hero (nakhchivan), Friday, 4 November 2011 23:19 (fourteen years ago)

so was it much different? I'd probably try to find a way to shoehorn Beckham in there. For free-kicks alone xpost

Number None, Friday, 4 November 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

I can't remember. I think I did two versions because someone complained about my original formation or something. Must find thread....

Mister Potato shares Manchester United’s commitment to (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 4 November 2011 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

Found it in the sandbox:

I can't? He got 40-odd goals the other season. How about 4-2-3-1:

Keane
Ince

Giggs
Cantona
Ronaldo

RVN

This means no Beckham, but maybe I can live with that better than leaving out Cantona.

irwin vidic stam parker

Nigel Farage is a fucking hero (nakhchivan), Friday, 4 November 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

(xp) Cheers! So my first version was:

Schmeichel (there's not really any doubt about this one)

Evra (though a lot of people would go for Irwin)
Vidic
Ferdinand (this has probably been the best partnership, though probably one of them should be replaced by Stam)
G Neville

Giggs
Keane (again, I don't think anyone would question this one)
Scholes (ahead of Ince who might be too similar to Keane)
Beckham (for the crosses and combination with G Nev down the right)

Ronaldo
Van Nistelrooy

Sorry Eric!
