What kind of world do we live in where Newcastle can be third in the league? Society is in the gutter etc

It is p amazing how well the likes of Tiote, Obertan, Cabaye and Ba have come together, not to mention Ben Arfa has yet to become a first team player yet.

More importantly though, Ashley is nowhere in the papers and Barton, Nolan and Carroll have fucked off, meaning the atmosphere at the club must be so un-newcastle like.

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 12:20 (fourteen years ago)

Obertan is still pretty shit, ditto Leon Best who is becoming this year's classic 15-goals-off-the-arse striker.

Cabaye and Ba are very good though. Think they're running on momentum a bit and they haven't had to play anyone particularly difficult yet (other than Spurs who should have beaten them, and Arsenal, who we've established were shit).

Matt DC, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 12:23 (fourteen years ago)

still hoping that it's a kind fixture and injury list and nothing more, otherwise i really do fear for wenger and kenny

Number of big* six (Man U, Man C, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs) faced in league so far: 2 - draws with Spurs and Arsenal, both at home.

3 of their next 4 fixtures are away at both Manchester clubs then Chelsea at home. Might be a more realistic looking table after that.

*when if ever etc

Police are making inquiries into racist abuse directed at the Newcastle United striker Sammy Ameobi on Twitter. A tweet posted by a user called @JonnnnyPhipps on Sunday said: "@Sammy_Ameobi your hand is nearly the same colour. #nigger".

In response a statement on Newcastle United's official website said: "The racist comment is wholly unacceptable. Newcastle United will not tolerate racism of any kind and will take the strongest possible action against those responsible."

Sammy, 19, is the younger brother of the former England under-21 striker Shola Ameobi, 30, who has played for Newcastle all his career.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: "The matter was reported to police on Sunday. Police are investigating."

Meanwhile, the Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand has also been targeted with racist abuse via his Twitter account. One tweet said: "RT this you fucking BLACK CUNT, 1 England captain" in support of John Terry, to which Ferdinand re-posted another message in response which read: "More proof of JT leading his moronic fans by example."

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 14:09 (fourteen years ago)

it is fucking horrible any time someone racially abuses someone but fuck if it took shola amoebi for the police to notice that people on the internet are racist fucks. they should head to a wrestling message board some time.

Shit, just read that Jonathon Wilson piece about the Steau player being rendered deaf in one ear after a 'fan' ran onto the pitch and punched him round the side of the head :(

was kind of thinking about starting a thread about that one, but I didn't know what to call it... could ILF use an "ultras" thread?

You may call Arsenal supporting Waitrose shoppers the worst but sadly you are rong: Ultras in the modern game

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

should be hooligans not ultras no?

mizzell, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

how about:

Ultras and Hooligans and Lazio fans in general are the scum of the earth: 'Supporters' in the modern game

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

the behaviour of ultras differs in different countries and even between teams in countries, a bit of boxing is an integral part of the thing in many places, however i would still say that in general ultras and other active supporters > the theatre crowd.

zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

also it's the modern game that's the problem more than the support in general.

zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 17:29 (fourteen years ago)

ok well i was thinking that a rolling thread may work better if left open, as opposed to just starting a thread once a month that will get 12 posts but whateverz

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

Ultras thread's a good idea imo, ILF opprobrium can't be weaker than a Uefa sanction. Also lots of ultras do cool things, a bit of compare-and-contrast can make pariahs of these goons.

Let dan pick the title though, eh? I'm still reeling from that belguim fiasco.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 17:45 (fourteen years ago)

aw man I am terrible with the thread titles

bomb.gif (dan m), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 18:28 (fourteen years ago)

Is is about a mentality or just being mental? A thread about ultras and other active football supporters.

‘His family are now living in England, so he's quite happy and settled,’ said Joorabchian in the Daily Mirror.

‘He had some problems about being away from them before, but they are with him now and everything is fine.

‘He'd be happy to move to another Premier League club.

Confirmation that police were starting an inquiry that could yet end in criminal proceedings was delivered shortly before Chelsea were held to a surprise 1-1 Champions League draw against Genk on Tuesday night. It was a game in which Terry was an unused substitute and it was marred by chants from sections of the travelling support.

Some among the 1,100 visiting fans were heard chorusing: "We know what you are, we know what you are. Anton Ferdinand, we know what you are."

Richard Chartres, the Bishop of London, was formerly Bishop of Stepney, which would make him a natural ecclesiastical Hammer.

Is it possible this has caused him to change his name by deed poll this season?

On the Goals On Sunday programme on 6 September 2009, Breen revealed that he had agreed to move to Inter Milan after the 2002 World Cup, but failed a medical.[6] Breen had also been linked with a move to Barcelona.[7] Breen left Barnet in June 2010.[8]

Wayne Rooney’s record £5million five-book deal with HarperCollins is the subject of much discussion at the publishers, who are considering a revamp of the troubled contract.

The second autobiography in the series has already been postponed once following England’s dismal 2010 World Cup. Plans to bring out the book either before or after Euro 2012 are also on the back burner, with Rooney suspended from the group stage of the tournament.

With football life stories not selling well, there are doubts whether a big enough market exists for at least three more Rooney memoirs.

This has led to talks on how the 12-year contract, signed in 2006, could be re-configured.

HarperCollins, who have new sports book management, are also discussing the most suitable publishing strategy for John Terry’s autobiography, for which a seven-figure advance has been paid.

The book was originally due in the shops after the 2010 World Cup and the current racism allegation will only add to the sensitivity around a publication date.
