i was thinking so that she won't be implausibly old if they end up with her married and starting a family in later seasons of the show

although does anyone else find ann to be a really sad character?
― a hoy hoy, Friday, 4 November 2011 08:59 (fourteen years ago)
Lately, yes. Way sadder than someone like her should be.
― nickn, Friday, 4 November 2011 09:29 (fourteen years ago)
They have totally been upping up her pathetic quotient lately, whether it's being spurned by the Pawnee Goddesses or trying to get Ron and April to talk to her for a minute or being dressed as an eggplant. I like it; it gives Rashida Jones something new to play, and it makes it seem like the writers understand that its audience doesn't even really like Ann all that much (relative to Leslie or Ron or Andy or April etc).

Ann Perkins!
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 4 November 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)
The big problem with Ann as a character was that, for a long time, she came across as being generically perfect when compared to the others; everyone else either has a character trait or a situation that sets them outside of the norm but Ann was sort of conceived as the "real person" observing all of the maniacs. Once they brought in Ben to take over as the "real person", they needed to make her fit more into the lunacy of the Pawnee landscape; the creative choice of making her normality a strike against her, causing her to flounder and turn into a loser, is kind of genius. (They're doing a similar thing with Ben and his nerdiness. In the end, Pawnee will claim you and make you strange.)
Ugh I don't like any of that now that I've reread it but I spent too much time typing to delete it.

April & Andy are a billion times more adorable couple than Jim & Pam.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 4 November 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)
The difference being that once Jim & Pam actually got together, everything interesting about either one of them was killed off as they became "JAM". April & Andy, on the other hand, are so much better together (and married) than they were before.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 November 2011 17:26 (fourteen years ago)
Well, yeah, but I just also find their chemistry a lot more endearing.

ITA, Jim and Pam became the ultimate smug marrieds. Andy and April seem to make each other even goofier and more endearing.
― bouquet beatdown (Nicole), Friday, 4 November 2011 20:39 (fourteen years ago)
I think I always hated Pam, and hated Jim after he dumped Karen, because why would you dump Rashida Jones? (unless she was being so normal she was a loser, DJP otm)

good episode but kinda irked by how much more than $10,000 that party would've cost
also you can't just drive up to the grand canyon, and there'd be people/mules everywhere

still don't understand the cuddlestein mountain vibe people have with the characters on this show. i laugh at some of the jokes but when i look at the characters i'm like oh look there's amy poehler being a dork, there's adam scott being uptight, there's aziz ansari being obnoxious, etc. they don't really feel like people to me.
― prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Saturday, 5 November 2011 18:57 (fourteen years ago)
how does one explain a cuddlestein mountain vibe? you either feel it or you don't.
― horseshoe, Saturday, 5 November 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)
aziz ansari, though, has a perfectly round and adorable face. if you don't respond to that you are just a monster and i can't help you.
― horseshoe, Saturday, 5 November 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)
Like I said upthread, it's basically a live action "Simpsons," with their own little weird universe (they even have a Shelbyville). You don't really watch for character development. You watch what these set characters do when placed in funny situations or faced with certain challenges.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)
When Tom got kissed by the cute girl from the strip club I was all "Awwww <3 <3"....and April + Andy doing Andy's bucket list was the cutest ever...and Leslie taking Ben to the gas station and pretending not to be sadface...I really go for that shit. They're zingy and funny too and I can appreciate it on that level, but there's some genuinely sweet moments for these characters too and those moments feel very likeable and human and FINE YES I LIVE ON CUDDLESTEIN MOUNTAIN.
― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 5 November 2011 19:16 (fourteen years ago)
Aw I knew it was going to be the Grand Canyon as soon as they got out of the car, and we just went there a few weeks ago after wanting to go for ages, so that was cool.

they don't really feel like people to me
What's interesting is I totally consider P&R a "live action Simpsons" as well, and back when that show was good it managed to be both cartoony and heartfelt, and more well-rounded than most live action shows (like, maybe only Roseanne beat it out). There is similarly a lot of exaggeration to the characterizations in P&R, but they also get away with it because the writers ground them in some real emotion (it was nice to see, for example, Leslie being crazed as a reaction to Ben having a possible romance, since we hadn't seen her respond to the breakup). So they may be cartoonish, but their centers feel more true to me--I have known and loved several Andys in my life--than any other current sitcom characters.
― all the other twinks with their fucked up dicks (billy), Sunday, 6 November 2011 01:20 (fourteen years ago)
i didn't mean cartoonish per so much as 'familiar comedians/comic actors playing very broad personality types'
― prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Sunday, 6 November 2011 01:23 (fourteen years ago)
Still laughing at Whitney comparing P&R to Drew Carey. Now I'm unemployed I started watching P&R from the beginning and it really is pretty painful

tbf i think we all agree that the first season and a half is legit bad tv sunny but it becomes fun after the boring guy leaves and they stop trying to push rashida jones as, well, anything worth caring about.
