cognitive overhead of dealing with two computers too much for me.

caek, Thursday, 27 October 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

well this is why i'm wondering if an ipad would actually suit my mobile purposes just fine. all i REALLY do is email and surf the web. i'm trying to imagine scenarios where i'd want to do anything that required ~horsepower~ and they're all sorta fringe cases. if anything, i'd just miss my customizable stuff

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Thursday, 27 October 2011 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

I stopped missing my customisable stuff as soon as it stopped being customisable, tyranny of choice etc.

If all you want is email and a web browser, keep in mind that ipads don't do flash.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Thursday, 27 October 2011 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

ah fuck, flash :(

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Thursday, 27 October 2011 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

Why are people surprised that Apple's getting into TV?

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Thursday, 27 October 2011 21:16 (fourteen years ago)

who is surprised?

caek, Thursday, 27 October 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

wankosphere

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Thursday, 27 October 2011 21:18 (fourteen years ago)

I use a mbp 'desktop' and a 11" air and it's fine imo. dropbox + google chrome sync + mail keep almost everything sync'd

dayo, Thursday, 27 October 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

flash shrinks ur balls anyway gbx

cozen, Thursday, 27 October 2011 21:38 (fourteen years ago)

You need at least one flash-capable device so you can look at restaurant menus. Some Android tablets cope all right with flash iirc.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Thursday, 27 October 2011 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

Kindle Fire ;)

schwantz, Thursday, 27 October 2011 21:58 (fourteen years ago)

omg is that vim on ipad????????

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Thursday, 27 October 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

via ssh, ja. if ipad is sufficient for you then there is plenty of scope for timewasting via unix fun.

i would get ipad + imac in yr shoes.

caek, Thursday, 27 October 2011 22:25 (fourteen years ago)

Huh:

Ned Raggett, Friday, 28 October 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

that makes me uncomfortable on several levels

whoop, up the butt it goes (silby), Friday, 28 October 2011 01:17 (fourteen years ago)

ok maybe just one level

whoop, up the butt it goes (silby), Friday, 28 October 2011 01:17 (fourteen years ago)

Apple getting into televisions would surprise me because:
- Apple's monitors are so unvaried and somewhat glitchy in support. You can get iMacs in more sizes than the monitors ffs
- They have never fucked with sourcing large, lower resolution screens. They're constantly getting higher res screens, and the mid/high res ones are probably going to do pixel doubling in the next few years

Really, the perfect Apple TV box/set top box that does all television needs and connects to a display makes more sense.

avant-garde heterosexuals (mh), Friday, 28 October 2011 04:43 (fourteen years ago)

I agree. If the Apple TV were, you know, good, it would reinvent television.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Friday, 28 October 2011 04:46 (fourteen years ago)

It would be great if it reinvented television, but it would also have to be popular enough to force Comcast to reinvent their business model. I am not placing any bets on Comcast trying the smart, forward-looking thing before they try the evil thing first.

whoop, up the butt it goes (silby), Friday, 28 October 2011 05:05 (fourteen years ago)

Appointment viewing is dead.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Friday, 28 October 2011 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

i think apple's international market is sufficiently important to them now that not all their business decisions come down to "how do we do this with the fcc in some broken us market with at&t/comcast/terrible lol 90s american company".

caek, Friday, 28 October 2011 05:38 (fourteen years ago)

That and "how do we cut through this int'l division of rights artificial divide & conquer old media bullshit"

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 28 October 2011 05:43 (fourteen years ago)

yeah they have bigger problems and much bigger opportunities than the u.s. market if they want to do tv. wish there were writers that realised this, e.g. i have the feeling gruber doesn't even have a passport.

caek, Friday, 28 October 2011 05:45 (fourteen years ago)

uh it's called the "internet" you herb god

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Friday, 28 October 2011 05:47 (fourteen years ago)

gbx i'd look at the cost of a mini + ipad if you've already got the monitor. recall that imac hard drives cannot be upgraded. (minis can.) of course the airs are incredibly sweet. i am biased cause i just got a mini but i have to say that after like a decade+ of using a laptop as my main computer there is something nice about not constantly plugging/unplugging/moving my main computer. it's just there. i wake it up.

dayo, Friday, 28 October 2011 11:00 (fourteen years ago)

But with a laptop you get all the advantages of a mini, plus you can take it around with you if you need to. Also, you have a in built secondary monitor should you need the real estate. The only disadvantage I can see is paying a larger price for that,

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 28 October 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

also, the HD in a mini is way bigger

but yeah you're right, pretty sweet to have a full computer that weighs like nothing

yes, they should definitely start the appletv rollout in russia.

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 28 October 2011 13:18 (fourteen years ago)

whoa, i honestly thought they had stopped making the mini?? cuz that's actually an awesome idea, TH

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Friday, 28 October 2011 13:42 (fourteen years ago)

not my point xp. my point is that journalists writing about apple should realise what i'm sure apple do: they make more money outside the u.s. than in it (true for a couple of years now iirc), the u.s. media/telecoms markets aren't much like those in the rest of the world, and there are bigger, more profitable media companies than comcast and at&t, with regional influence.

caek, Friday, 28 October 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

that's true, but good press and tech press flows from america

dayo, Friday, 28 October 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

ya but they tend to START everything in the US...

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Friday, 28 October 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

also USA is best

max, Friday, 28 October 2011 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

why because is best

dayo, Friday, 28 October 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

ya dayo. i agree that's the reason they focus on the us market so much, i'm saying it would be better if they spent a little time learning/thinking about the rotw and stopped writing things like "apple need to make an iphone 5 because verizon want them to" or whatever.

slocks, sure. i'm not talking about apple. i'm talking about tech journalists/bloggers.

caek, Friday, 28 October 2011 16:40 (fourteen years ago)

yeah gbx the minis jut got updated w faster everything, thunderbolt etc

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 28 October 2011 16:47 (fourteen years ago)

looks like i can get a refurbished new-model mini for 649 (+ 79 for the drive, which i would need)

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Friday, 28 October 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

they sell generic external DVD drives for less than that

dayo, Friday, 28 October 2011 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i'm seeing some good stuff on newegg

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Friday, 28 October 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

also is there any appreciable difference between an i5 or i7?

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Friday, 28 October 2011 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

http://www.macworld.com/article/157893/2011/02/2011macbookpro_benchmarks.html

caek, Friday, 28 October 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

thx dude

actually found a mini benchmark, too, and the i7 is like 33% faster than the i5. hmmmm...

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Friday, 28 October 2011 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

depends on how long you want to keep it for? $100 more over 4-6 years is not a lot.

dayo, Friday, 28 October 2011 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

otoh it's not gonna make chrome 33% faster, maybe just handbrake encoding or something

dayo, Friday, 28 October 2011 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

Lightroom? also 90 w/discount. boosting to 8gb w/aftermarket RAM would be 55. and do I need a 7200 rpm drive? etc.

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Friday, 28 October 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

basically:

for what i do--normal stuff, LR, Portal (and the like)--would i benefit more from

RAM (+55)
processor (+90)
7200rpm HD (+135)

or some combination thereof? i can get a refurb (2.5 i5, 4gb, 500gb) for 699 (v. 749 new).

whereas an i7 is 869, and 1004 w/a 7200rpm drive. part of the appeal of the mini is the economy, and coming from a 2007 MBP with (2.4 core duo, 4gb RAM, 160gb @ 5400? 7200?), p much anything is going to seem like lightning

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Friday, 28 October 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

right? sorry for shitting up this thread, again
