got to say I'm impressed with the iphone 4S after some scary reports

manages a full day and half's normal use

jjj: too many push notifications and whatnot maybe? I turned most of mine off after reading an article about that being a big battery drain..

My battery is slightly drainier but nothing worth panicking about.

One thing I found, and YMMV, but I turned off the notification center for Calendar (I have a bunch of calendars) after reading somewhere that this helped, and my iPhone 4 started performing much better, and wasn't as hot. I still checked the alert boxes, so I get calendar alerts, but the "Notification Center" thing is turned off. Seems like a bug.

I haven't noticed it draining faster and I pay attention close to my battery life.

My upgrade took F I V E H O U R S.

The only thing I didn't like post-upgrade was that iTunes would spring to life as soon as it was around the phone and stay on as long as the phone was on, so I turned off automatic wifi synch. My poor laptop can't handle running iTunes all the time.

Did you turn off "open iTunes when this phone is connected"

Regardless, I wouldn't run iTunes on your computer either.

I turned off something and it stopped happening. I think it was the power mains to my building.

The "elegant" banner notification solution is so disgusting that I turned them all off.

You want to tap a nav button at the top of the screen but you can't because there's a freaking banner just hanging there for like five seconds.

I just timed 6.7 seconds.

4S battery life isnt hot but it can be improved by turning off most of the background stuff, calendars/notifications esp

so after updated my 3gs with IOS5, now, every time I connect my phone to my computer, it backs up or updates something like 2k files, I have no idea what they are; I don't have itunes do smart playlists or anything, I manually manage my music, so I don't know wtf is going on. Also spends a ton of time syncing genius something or other. Also, about half my music was unplayable after I restored (I backed up the phone and it restored it from some file), totally annoying.

Back up to iCloud like a real man then.

Unless you care about photos. Fucking photo app now crashing every time I try to launch it. Known bug, you have to do some funky terminal shit to fix it. Fukk that

the new notifications when the screen is locked that let you open directly to the notifying app are the greatest thing ever IMO

I sit at a desk all day so I just leave my phone plugged in.

I've got a 3GS and upgraded the software a week or two ago. Mysteriously, Google Maps has stopped working. It loads the page, but without a map, and none of the buttons do anything. Anyone got a solution?

i just got a 4S but everytime i upgraded the iOS software on my old 3G it seemed to disable something else--maps and location services in particular slowed down to crawl; also typing would sometimes just not work.

does anybody else hang on the unlock screen for a few seconds after sliding

it's embarrassing because sometimes the music I'm listening to has cover art featuring a big bottom bird and the big bottom just stays on the screen for 5 seconds while I tug my collar and pretend to be focused intently on my sleeve

maybe I'll just replace all the cover art in my itunes with pictures of churche

Here's a tricky one for you: how can I transfer music to my iPhone without using iTunes? The issue is that the computer I'm using now to sync my phone is only temporary and in order to put anything on it music-wise it wants me to delete EVERYTHING (apps and all) and resync, which will just take like 5 hours and fuck up all my folders (which it just did when I upgraded to iOS 5), and then I'll have to do it all over again when I get my original computer set back up again in a month or so.

Anyway, I know that you can upload music to Dropbox and use BoxyTunes as a front-end, but it only allows you to make one playlist of all the music you want and only lists track titles, and I wanted to throw like 10 or 15 albums on my device which would be a mess. Are there any apps that'll let you transfer music to them via iTunes File Sharing in the Apps tab? Or any other cloud-based thingies that'll work nicely playing music?

I just tried box.net app but, like the Dropbox app, it only plays one song at a time.

I'm thinking maybe ZumoDrive which apparently has a decent media player built into its iOS app? Anyone have any experience with this or other media-friendly cloud services (except mSpot which I read transcodes everything you upload to 48kbps :-/ )

I hate having to use itunes to synch music - I dont *buy* music from itunes so stuff them. So now I must be the only person in the world with an iphone that has no music on it at all, haha. :/

Air Sharing would do what you want, it's basically a "use your phone as a flash drive" app but it has a media player built in. Just save your separate albums in separate folders (it lets you copy them onto there OTA too, which is handy).

Air Sharing looks rad but I don't have $7 to spend on just playing music :(

Is anyone here using LevelUp? I just signed up and it seems really great so far and has a 100x better model than Groupon. It's an app that's linked to a credit/debit card that you then use to pay for things at places that accept it (there are tons in Philly). Off the bat you get credit (like, little gift certificates) to tons of places and none of them require minimum purchases. Then once you spend x amount of $ at a given place, you get more credit towards it (e.g. $15 after you spend $150). I'm usually wary of shit like this but it seems pretty great so far.

Oh also apparently if you sign up with this code they gave me (33724) we both get addtl $5 credit good anywhere. So like you basically get a free meal just for signing up

i have used it once. not that many places around here are taking it. also they send me like three promo emails a day and i can't figure out how to opt out of that. but it's a decent idea.

I am rly excited abt it because not only do I have this incentive to try all these new places, but I've got all these discounts and will get more if I keep going back. This seems like one of those situations where everybody (me, local establishments, LevellUp) wins
